Well they dont suck but how come they all have that TERRRRIBLE grind? honestly mmorpgs are still video games videogames are suppose to be fun, i really dont know any western mmorpg where the grind is that bad, not even EQs grind is that bad. my god.
Someone told me that at this level that he was at in Lineage it took him a month of playing everyday for hours to gain a level. He eventually had enough and quit..
The grind is not worse, the grind is longer. if there was no grind, then things like the main event every pay to play Korean MMO has wouldn't work as well as it does now.
I haven't played them all, so I can't speak with any authority on it. According to a lot of the Asian posters on the board, however, not all of them do suck. Apparently there are a ton of terrific games made there that never see the light of day here. I think the problem is that all of the ones imported to Europe and North America tend to be free-to-play titles that share many of the same unpopular "features," and that's caused a bad reputation for the games of the entire region.
Now, I will say this- part of the problem is that Eastern and Western cultures (in general) due tend to place priorities on different things in these games. Perhaps some of that is due to actual cultural beliefs, or perhaps it's just because MMOs developed along different paths in the different regions, and we've become comfortable with what we know.
Whatever the case, I know that there have been "game concepts" from the East that I liked a great deal, but they were imported to North America with no attempt to "westernize" them other than a bad translation of in-game text. I love character customization, I hate the clutter of player shops everywhere (give me auction houses, dangit!), I don't like heavy grind, I do like immense mob variety, I abhor games based on purchases of in-game goods and services for real world cash, I require the ability to remap keys, and I can't stand click-to-move systems. And yet, every game from Asia that's imported to the West seems to have few of the things from my "likes" list, and tons of things from the "dislikes" list.
We can debate for years whether or not the things I mentioned are good, bad, or even important, but the main thing is that I (and I assume quite a few western players) feel they're important. Despite that, importers don't usually do much of anything to customize their products for a different target audience, or even realize that there is a different target audience.
From lvl 1 ~60, L2 can be just as fast as WOW if not faster...(I felt faster...15 min. from level 1~5 in L2 can you do it in WOW?). It's just level cap in L2 is higher, that's all.
Unfortuntly many tiny brain people don't even realize WOW is a grinding...just because those so called "quests" force you to have a delievery every 10 wolves or 10 thieves...instead of kill 500 all the way. It is exactly a grinding!
As the matter of fact, there is NOT any non grinding MMO exist at this moment.
At least Korean game such as L2 has good endgame fun with real open PvP and Castle Siege. Unlike WOW's carebear pointless "PvP", stupid meaningless battleground that isn't even a part of the world.
koreans have a very different idea of what is entertaining. this is mainly because they don't have entertainment in their country, they tend to get beheaded for watching MTV. so given even the dullest, most obismal steaming pile of excrement of a game, they'll still find it more entertaining than day-to-day life.
this is why we westerners tend to think korean MMO's are pap. because... they are.

Talking about South Korean made game not North Korea. Better yet North Korea isn't anything like you said.

Well if an American game like EQ or EQ2 are ported to Korea then it should be a mega hit right? Too bad that hasn't happened yet; even the american game that had the biggest number in Korea for an american game, WoW still doesn't contend with the Korean made games numbers in Korea.

umm I thought EQ and EQ2 are made by Sony, and that's a Japanese company.

I love the ignorance in this thread. FYI guys, Koreans complain more about the grind in Lineage II than WE do. So stop with your steryotypical replys, "lol koreans grind!111!!".
I think this was mentioned before in an Archlord thread that mentioned Lineage 2. Basically the thing is that just killing random monsters all day is enough for Koreans, whereas its safe to say Americans especially have a short attention span. WoW is a grind, but the grind has a sense of direction in the form of quest, making playing WoW much more enjoyable because of its sense of direction. Most Korean MMOs I have played dont even bother with quests, I just run around all day and kill monsters. The longest time I spent doing that before I got fed up was ROSE Online. I am content with a long grind, even enjoy it, but I want a sense of direction at the very least like WoW did.

Well, killing mobs all day is enough? Well not for Korean games. Like I said, at least L2 has fun endgame behind the silly grinding.
What does WOW have beside killing different mobs? Nothing really.

Both Everquest and Everquest 2 were released in korea. Even Ultima Online was released in Korea. in fact, Everquest was hosted by NCsoft.
I would like to bring up the fact that you probably havn't played every korean MMO out there, hell, I have serious doubts you have even tried all the MMOs in america. This forum has such a diverse list of games on it, to say that all the games on this forum suck would be a HUGE generalization. You are doing the same thing however on a much larger scale and you probably don't speak korean, so even if there arn't any good korean MMOs how would you know? Ignorance and stereotypical posts like this bother me, there is too much blind judgement in the world today...
Originally posted by alyssa hi guys!! =D new to this forum. anywayz... thought i'd chime in on this topic. i like korean mmo's (like lineage2) because the grind keeps alot of the young, immature kiddies out!
Not necesarily, I think it does a better job of keeping the 16+ players out who actually have a job and a life during summer vacation. Alot of kiddies who have the whole summer to do whatever the hell they feel like doing will just grind and grind and grind until they are uber leet and bragging about it every second of the day. Although it will probably keep the ADD peeps like myself from playing
It also leave everyone else out too. every grind game a play i get tired of cause its the same damn thing all the time, like Hero online, its got good graphics and such, but its dry and boring cause its the same old grind.

if that were true, lineage2 would have younger players than WoW... but after playing both games... that is not the case at all

Yeah I guess that's true, I don't mean to be rude but would you mind if I inquired as to your age?
EDIT: Sorry, forgot about the 'user info' button... Anyways at the risk of choosing to be offencive I'll cut off my post at that.

P.S. for the Lineage 2 guy I quit at lvl 68 and by that time I was getting about 15% per day if I played a long time.
Best spin ever.

Anyone care to think comment about Ragnarok Online (RO)?
qrRO (www.quantumraiders.com/qrRO) is better than iRO, btw

Don't be so brainwashed yet ignorant.
umm I thought EQ and EQ2 are made by Sony, and that's a Japanese company.
EQ2 was made by a localized branch of Sony in San Diego, CA.
EQ was made by another US company and bought by Sony.
