I really want to try this game out and I might buy it I just want to know, i sthe grind THAT bad? I mean, the only game with a long grind that I have played is FFXI, is this worse? Or is it the same? Please help me.
The grind takes longer, yes. But I dunno if you can actually call it worse...
It is longer. On how much you will enjoy it depends on the people you meet and the type of game play you enjoy. If you really like PvP I would suggest L2. If you don't and like more questing, I would say no to L2.
Oh and also you shouldn't be a person that is strongly effected by grind. If you can't handle much grind then I would also not play L2. This is a hardcore game, unlike most MMOs. You can play it causually, but then you will never be the best or even really close to it. You will be competition...but if you are just causual that hardcore players will stomp you.
Good game IMO though, and I am not a hardcore player I am a college student and work part time.

You see I don't play much, except during the summer. For example I am hardcore in the summer time. Also I have been playing actively for about 13 months. 13 Months ago ppl weren't as high level as they are now. So it isn't exactly the same as starting fresh out right now. You will not hit lvl cap within a few months. So for about a year if you are a very casual player you will be stomped by high levels. It actually wasn't till recently that I can start pwning in pvp.
Now this is if you can't get into a good clan.
IF you get into a good clan you will level faster, enjoy yourself more, and be stomped less...and do some stomping yourself.
But basically you don't get a good taste of the game until you hit lvl 45 or so. This can take you anywhere from a week or two, to a month or three depending on how you play.
And you don't really reach high end pvp until you are 65+. Although, you definately can experience pvp before hand, and experience some great pvp if you have a good clan..
hmm...I don't really know how to put it...I guess if you don't get a good clan that you like the game will suck hardcore, lol. If you find a good clan this is the BEST mmo on the market.
No matter what though, the people that have been dedicated since prelude or so will always STOMP you...and they will stomp me...unless you are truely hardcore.
Lineage and FFXI are both "hardcore" grind-heavy games. The difference I've found is that grinding is Lineage 2 is more soloable, and is easier in the sense you don't HAVE to party to level, as in FFXI. I'm not reffering to Beastmaster, of course, and how well you can solo depends on you're class. Healers/buffers can't solo well as you might imagine. Still the grind is quite long, don't get me wrong there, but it's hard to say whether it's better or worse (longer or shorter) than FFXI because of the different in ability to solo in each game.
This maybe a bit of a cop out but I can't help but think that better grind versus a worse grind is matter of perception, of how much you enjoy playing. The grind felt the worse right up until I quit FFXI. Playing was tedious and mechanical, so the grind seemed incredibly long.
Both are time intensive even difficult game, no question there, but I'd try it out and see how long and arduous the grind seemed to you, as everyone's grind tolerance varies widely.
Basically any ranged class or nuker are good at soloing. So that means the archers: Silver Rangers, Phantom Rangers, Hawkeyes. And the nukers: Spellsingers, Spellhowlers, Sorcerors.
The pet classes, as in most games can solo well also. Those are: Elemental Summoners (unicorns), Phantom Summoners (dark spirits), Warlocks (human-like cats), and Necromancers (undead). I heard summoners solo easily (little risk) but it can be somewhat slower than the ranged damage people.
It's possible to solo with the tank classes but every tank I know says its extremely slow. Hope that helps.
I'm on Hindeminth, and my clan is recuiting, as is most clans on the server. It seems like many new clans have sprung up recently.
EDIT: There is no free trial that I know of unforunately. You should should be able to find the retail copy for about 20 dollars, it has the standard first month free deal.
if u wanna solo fast with an archer then u have to play with dagger since u hit lvl 40 reason is if u solo with a non grade bow + d grade that means no CS on those bows 5-10 mobs then rest for mp regen that really sucks worst for mages cause wearing robe means no pdef so the only way u can solo is using staff (Rest every 5 mins again) it isnt hard to hit lvl 40 it will take u maximum 1 weeks if u know where to hunt and how
i lvlled my archer from lvl 36 to lvl 58 in 1/5 week but i was soloing with a prophet 60 lvl
best way to lvl up if u dont have a buffer is
solo till u hit 20lvl thats an 8 hours exp maximum..then find someone in ur lvl and go duo or trio in catacombs.
on a 3 hours exp per day u can easy hit lvl 40 in 5-7 days
i remember back on c3 it was really amazing (ab AOE FTW)
now these days has gone
if u need any help about hunt areas etc feel free to post ur question and we ll help u

What you mean is, I still make arcger class but fight with daggers instead? The grind oesn't so so bad, going to get this game today. I'm sure there's a hell of an update after I install it right?

You progress in steps in Lineage II. For example, to become a silver ranger:
Elf fighter -> Elf rouge -> Silver Ranger
you need to progress down that past. The rouge gets both dagger and bow masterys, and the silver ranger just specilizes on the bow further.

I tried a spellhowler, not much into kiting. In fact, I hate shoot and run classes. Right now Im an orc destroyer. Ive had very good success in soloing. However, I do usually keep a lot of potions of haste and greater attack potions if im not buffed.
soloing with a 2h sword and a polearm is extremely viable. in a group with a bishop nuker combo you can power level to hell and back using a polearm.
