FOTM

vlhergvlherg Member UncommonPosts: 14

There's been a few postings claiming that pre-CU everyone or almost everyone had a "flavour of the month" template and it's got me wondering just how many did.

I know it's not scientific but please take the poll and if you want, say what your template was.

I was a master pistoleer, master smuggler with some bits of scout, medic and marksman.

Edited for an aftethought If for example you went into the game from day 1 wanting to be a rifleman/CM and at some point that just happened to be FOTM, class yourself as a no. If you became rifleman/CM because it was FOTM, class yourself as yes.

I was a Combat Medic at some point...which falls into the FOTM category :(

Before that, I was a bit of CH, Scout, Medic, Doctor, Artisan, Pistoleer and Marksman all at once (although not very far up many of those)

    Never played Master Rifleman/CM...

Played as a Master Rifleman/CH/Marksmen and then as a Master Rifleman/Marksmen/WS.  Loved Rifleman, still do. gonna play one in SoR.

I was a Master Rifleman / Master Weaponsmith with a little scout/medic for most of my time in the pre-CU.  I did not power grind to get there either, I played the game for fun and role played and helped newbies, growing with them.  The game was more fun that way.

Eventually I decided to try Master Rifleman / Master Pistoleer / Fencer 4040, which was a very powerful template with fantasic offensive/defensive capabilty.  Not necessarily FOTM but close enough.  I must admit, that was WAY overpowered.  With 80% Comp and 2500+ buffs I was able to aggro two entire Imperial Bases at once and kill them all.  That WAS insane.  Fun the first time, but a little off-putting after that.

Eventually I returned to Master Rifleman / Master Shipwright and played the game for fun, instead of "Uberness".

I realize I said I quit. I never said it was forever :)

    Lets see.

    Wanderhome Character:

    PRe-CU:

Ralp was a Scout, Carbineer and Master Squad Leader, then turned Squad Leader in for Commando. He stayed commando from about August 2003, and dabbled in others to be more commando like. Considering Commando back then barely had any weapons, and those that worked did abysmall damage. Yet, he did well in PvP, since he/I knew the limitations of himself, and always made sure that he fought on his terf...as in Burning close.

    CU:

Ralp stayed with Commando, but added smuggler and TKM. Smuggler because the few friends remaining in the CU needed FP, and TKM since it was good for a character that always fought in rather close quarters.

    NGE: Commando.

    Bria Character:

    Pre-CU:

RK-XXXI was a rifleman and a commando. He swapped between master rifle and master smuggler, but remained Commando throughout his whole SWG life. Couldn't decide if a "true" commando should have the sniping abilities of a rifleman, or the sneaky ways of a smuggler. In the end, Smuggler won out, because RK-XXXI became a Stormtrooper Sergeant, and did alot of paperwork, wich got him plenty contacts within the Imperial Supply system. The remaining points went into rifleman however. Despite not being a FOTM, he often did very well in PvP, so much he often, without gear and meds (ST armor was 30%, but vulnerable towards stun, thus in combat eh often wore his uniform instead, to conserve his ham usage. Also didn't have buffs, thus making it a necessity to conserve HAM while fighting. Only thing he used were food and spices), could beat up 2 defense stackers at the same time. (Yes they had 90% armor, buffs and the full defense stacker FOTM)

    CU:

Stayed the same Commando/Smuggler/Rifleman template, but never tested in PvP. Bria and PvP = l33tbois playing the "grief and harrassment game", thus it wasn't much fun to do PvP.

    NGE:

    Commando.

    Chimaera character:

    Pre-CU and CU:

RK-ThreeOne kept the template from Bria afterthe PA moved there, namely Commando/Smuggler/Rifleman, because it was fun to play, and fit with his character. Worked well in both Pre-CU and CU PvP against other RP'ers in Guildwars..as in "no l337boi grief red's dead, lets clonecamp em and sit on their face", but rather PvP against others that respected the rules set by the PA's when it came to RP and PvP.

    NGE: Commando.

    Additional:

I've stayed commando throughout most my SWG life on all my characters, because I prefer the soldier character. Altho, I do not like commando at all after it became "Riflesquad MG trooper" instead of a real commando... When they were making the role of Commando, devs ignored RL commando and Star Wars commando, and instead listened to the "Rambo Fanbase".

Um, because you mastered "A" profession doesn't make you a FotM.

Fotm would be MBrawler, TKM, 4x4x Fencer, novice medic. And it would be FotM if this were the build that over 15% of pvpers were using. Down to the skillbox.

FotM would be stun weapons. But then again, it was only sensible choice, since the armor offered less mitigation.

There's one thing to notice however....

You see what you hang out with.

Meaning if you were a PvP'er, you would mostly interact with other PvP'ers, and thus you would come to the conclusion that most people were in fact FOTM's, because thats all you saw.

In my case however, I hung out with casual players and RP'ers and a few PvP'ers, thus my view was very few FOTM's, and plenty of "building your own Star Wars dream character". Ofcourse, since I also PvP'ed, I noticed that amongst the few(compared to the huge playerbase NOT PvP'ing) PvP'ers that they were mostly FOTM's.

So, before you claim "Everyone was a FOTM", take a good look at where you come from, because you might just see your fraction of the playerbase.

    q to the f'in e.

I was never a fotm, I liked discovering professions on my own. I started BH, then dropped it for various melee professions, as i preferred it to ranged. I was casually hologrinding so whatever profession i happened to be working on would be paired with something i really loved like TKM or pikes or even ID or tailor. I was never a hardcore pvp'er but I did jump in quite a bit. On my jedi I went with Master Powers which has NEVER to my knowlege been fotm.

Personally, I dont see whats wrong with having a few fotm build anyways. I dontthink there is any way possible to make every combat profession the best or equal in pvp. I think some should be best for pvp, some for pve, some for just casual combat like hybrid templates, but none of them gimped so bad that they cant contribute to group pvp or pve.

Is it unreasonable to ask someone who likes pvp'ing all the time to actually get a pvp template?

Been TKM from the start (two years for me), mastered all melee next to it, also mastered marksman, Brawler, Medic, CH and BH. Tried a few other profs like CM and stuff, I all did this for the fun of it, not for the FOTM thingy. I just wanted the badge :)

However imo TKM was more a FOTY :).

I was a Master Bounty Hunter, Master Carbineer, and Master Marksman Pre-CU.  After it was a little modified.  I Kept MBH, and MCarbs.  I dumped points from  Marksmanship and invested them into Squad Leader skills to improve my carbines.  Was nice while it lasted.

BH/Pistoleer or BH/Carbineer from day 1 until I quit at the CU. I tried Pikeman/Carbineer for about 2 weeks and it was ok, but I missed my BH.

FOTM templates were for people who had no goals in the game other than to just go around trying be to "l33t0rz th3n j00". I never had a problem killing them, because a good 95% of them didnt know shit about what they were, they just wanted an Acklay Stun baton or a Power Hammer made with some nice geonosian cubes just because it was the "cool" thing to have. I never had any "l33t" weapons really. I had the very first DE-10 made on my server (Shadowfire), I had some decent krayt tissue, nothing over +102 (I think). I wasnt into the whole farming krayts thing so I didnt have much tissue, got most of it from auctions, but I did loot 11 +85's once.

TKM/Master Bio-Eng. It was fun...sample rancor DNA, then smite them, then harvest their flesh!

  • chlaoschlaos Member Posts: 1,118

I played two main toons, the first was a MCH / M pistolleer for the most part (though I did dabble in Swords and BH).   Always kept my CH though, no matter what else i dabbled in.

My second toon was Master Doc / Master Pikewoman (I loved this template and played it until the CU).

For the most part, once I found a template I liked I stuck with it.  Cant say that I ever intentionally switched my temp. based on whatever was "in fashion" at the time.

i was tkm + anything - why because tkm offered the natural armour bonus and then left me free to do whatever i wanted pre-cu - if this is FOTM, dunno but boy did i have fun in PVE/PVP.

Should'nt this game be about fun(thats why we play them) it is'nt fun having bug after bug in every single quest i do - it is'nt fun having everthing i earnt whipped - it is'nt fun having having to re-learn a whole new way of combat - it is'nt fun having no-one to play with (grouping) sry to the point i didnt care about FOTM i just wanted to be me having fun when i came home from work it was a release, i can longer have that same release "thnxs $OE for both SWG & MXO".
