Well, when you are dealing with a server cluster like EVE's Tranquility (roughly 70 dual core AMD CPUs just for the Sol Nodes alone) it takes a lot of maintenance to keep everything running smoothly.

During a typical downtime a few thing will happen. First and most importantly, the entire database is backed up. This means that if for some reason the server explodes (and with the load TQ gets, its almost done that ::::02::) your characters are safe and sound, at least everything up to the last day. Then the database undergoes a good scrubbing so that everything is re-indexed for fast access times, old entries are deleted, and empty space is consolidated. The server will also look at the load history for each solar system and redistribute the CPUs accordingly. Then, any hot fixes are applied to fix any issues that have been exposed lately. Last, the entire cluster is rebooted to ensure stability and tested by the techs before allowing the players to log on.

I'm sure there is a lot more that is done during downtime, but that's the basics of it.

Any MMO has downtime. With EVE they have it daily, but all of that is accomplished in 30-60 minutes! Most other MMOs run on a weekly schedule, but their DT takes at least 6 hours and their servers are generally more unstable overall.

    Very interesting post.

However the real reason there is downtime is to let US players know its time to get off the computer and get some sleep. They dont want you dead after a 72 hour gaming session.

Edit: I think I need to include that this post has a satiric character, since we are on MMORPG and people take everythign for granted and flame anyone for anything.

I Live in Europe and I think downtime takes place at a perfect hour. I work during the week So It doesnt affect me and on the weekends when I do experience Downtime  it gives me time to do housework.
