Hi people. I'm leaving SWG (most likely) and looking for a new community and home. Someone suggested this game to me and it looks like it has most of what I liked in SWG (good player community, meaningful crafting roles, and complete sandbox). Too bad there isnt an entertainer proffesion though! lol
I just wanted to get some more info from the people who actually play the game on what it is like. Also if there are any other former SWG players, I would LOVE to hear your review! Thanks a bunch.

If at first you don't succeed, maybe skydiving isn't for you.

we got a few SWG refugees over here
maybe you'll feel at home if you spoke to them, get a free trial sorted and contact Faa of team spirit (the guild) I'm sure they will love to assist you
There are a lot of old swg players around, you could check the guild forums in ryzom for more about them.
I think I may have found a new home... Why have I never heard of this game before? How old is this game?

The graphics are excellent, but you may have difficulty if you can't tolerate a sort of French comic book style in the look of the characters.
I'm not sure but I think it's been around for about four years. Two years since release.
It "flies under the radar" quite a bit because it isn't advertised. At least, not outside of France. The only publicity it gets is from articles/interviews and word-of-mouth.

IMO the graphics leave a little to be desired and the UI is obstructive and simple (at least compared to SWG...) but it definately didnt stop me from playing ALL night! One of the most impressive things was the other players. I noticed a very good mix of experienced players and newbs like me. Every time I had a question or needed help, someone send me a private message right away. I have never seen such a helpful player base. I wish there was more I could do to customize my toon (it was a lot better than games like EVE, but still not quite what SWG had), but the graphics didn't "annoy" me like WoW's do. It really wasn't so cartoony that it ruined the immersion. I was impressed with the combat and the "hand" system. The ability to create your own actions totally rules. If it confuses me at first, that usually means its going to be good. I am disapointed that there is no limit on the number of skills you can have. It kind of makes crafters a little more useless if everyone has the ability to craft their own gear. I dont know WHY they didnt make the movement keys WASD instead of the arrow keys... If anyone knows a way to rebind the keys, please let me know. I think the quests and interaction is seemless. OVerall I'm very satisfied and I will definately be playing more!

PS - My Characters name is Riari on the English server, of course.

You also have to know that the mainland is not quest based like the Ruins of Silan. Ryzom is not a quest driven game. The quests of RoS are for learning the game.
Welcome from an old vet from the Intrepid galaxy (SWG).
The controls and skill boxes are similar enough to SWG to be familiar but just different enough to be rather annoying at first. Just stick with it and in a few days they'll feel just as intuitive as you old SWG ones.
A few minutes with the keymapping tool and you can pretty much set up all your keys the same as you had them.
