Non-Boring Combat in MMPORPGs

mjaygmjayg Member UncommonPosts: 41

I started this thread - http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion.cfm/loadforum/498/loadthread/8159/setstart/1/loadclass/171

In which I said:

"I read the interview about combat in UXO and want to know more. One thing that bugs me with MMORPGs is how they are mostly "hit and button and take a nap" style combat. I'll take a Halo break now and then and always wish combat in my fave MMORPGs could be more like that..."

Since the discussion opened up to more than UXO thought I would "move" the thread. Since my last post been trying the Lineage 2 beta and though the graphics are amazing the gameplay is pretty standard with some plusses and minuses; the biggest of the latter being the same old hit some buttons and take a break combat.

Any comments on this or other games? I'm hoping to find a game with more interactive and fun combat than ones I've tried. I know it will be difficult for a MMORPG to have the pulse-pounding excitement of combat in Halo but I hope someone is out there trying!

UXO looks like a possibility though, like WoW, I am finding the cartoony look, strong similarities to EQ and the somewhat annoying/silly races turn me off.

My MMORPGs...
Current: AC1, AC2, D2
Past: UO, EQ, AO, M59
Briefly: EnB, DAOC, SWG
Waiting For: UXO, L2, CoH, DnD, MEO
(also really enjoying Halo!)

Yeah PSide was recommended so will likely check it out. But looking for something more RPG oriented in the long run...

Neocron is a good one but pvp is meaningless in that game now.  Upcoming are face of mankind and priest.  Endless ages is another one but it takes a terribly long time to level because they have scaled the leveling process to people using macros... (brilliant)  Also pvp in that game is also quite meaningless at least at higher levels.  Until then equipment can be gained in combat and ammo/money can (pretty useless when you have nodrop equipment)

The combat system in Asheron's Call is the best I've seen as it allowed free movement even during combat and there was a certain degree of skill involved in it.  But the player did not need to  have skill to survive and all it could do was make a certain few who knew how to use it bypass a few experienced based chalenges.  Then again, you've played AC so you already know this...

A slightly expanded variant of this system would be nice, one that relied even more on the player's skill and included more ways to shape a battle.

The problem with trying perfect a formula for 'on-the-fly' combat (or something close to it) as appose to more 'turn-based' combat in a MMORPG is mostly due to performance. In most FPSs there is a limit to the number of people who can populate a playfield at a given time before lag becomes an issue.

Not only that but players tend to enjoy the responsiveness they get when hitting a button and having your character act accordingly with little or no delay. Although I've never played Planet Side, I have to say those guys were pioneers by taking a chance and breaking the player limit(32) that most online FPS have. So to them /salute. Now with the foundation provided by their idea and many others who attempt this task. This type of engine can be tweaked and developed to suit a MMORPG.

But that will take time and many, many failures. And I for one would hate it if my losing was caused by anything other than my lack of skills. Not too many companys are willing to take that chance of dealing with the problems of incorporating a 'real-time' combat system in a MMORPG. (i.e. slashing, thrusting, piercing, spellcasting and defense all done with controller inputs from the user.)

And how many traditional MMORPG players out there would welcome such a system? I would love it for one. Hmm. Can anyone but me see the potential pitfalls in such an endeavor?

I like how UOX is handling it, and I hope that WoW offers a good experience.

Spamming a button or two over and over, using /stick, and auto-combat are just plain boring.
