The hype is over???? Wow. Try telling that to all the people on the official forums who are clammering to play this game. If you are talking about movie hype that died along time ago. The hype for this game is the hype from the books that has been going strong for over 50 years and new people catch the bug every year when they first read the books.
Is there a single MMO on this web site that doesn't have someone saying "It will fail" before it's released?
LOTR online might be fun, but its the end game that everyone is concerned about when you're paying a monthly subscription. Without PvP, there is no ultimate goal unless you enjoy the grind so much you're willing to pay every month for it.
DAoC is a great PvP and I'm looking forward to AoC. I hope it stacks up as to the claim of being a PvP experience.
Just to let you know there is pvp in LOTRO. It will be lore appropiate and consensual. Now some may consider this not to be pvp but it is a form of pvp. Just not the FFA type.
In my opinion dueling is pointless. Even if the PVP is of the consentual variety there still needs to be a reason to fight. In DAOC the RVR conflict was our motivation. In WOW conrol of resources and flags on the battlefield along with honor points and loot are the reason. What pray tell will be my motivation to enter combat with other players in LOTRO?
Give us something worth fighting for and the PVP portion will flourish. Give us lame dueling arenas and watch the game fail.
Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.
To everyone who says "this game will never make it" "oh this ones failed" "to little to late" and all that stuff.. I just say, ya know what... don't get it. Fine by me. I'd rather play with a bunch of hardcore fans who love every aspect about the books, movies, characters, middle-earth.. it would be great for me if it was just that. I mean, how awesome is going to be, RP'ing with people who understand what you're going for and understand what you're talking about.
On top of that, I can't wait to see some of the new people who will be new to the LOTR world, it's going to be a blast showing them around, giving them information, and just talking about something I've loved for years and really have a strong passion for.
I think the OP was referring to the recent beta(alpha2) leaks which say that the combat in LotRO is too slow and boring.
This game is sounding more and more like DDO fiasco every day. I know people will claim that only few beta testers who hate LotRO are behind this information but I have been in enough betas myself to know that usually leaks are lot more trustworthy than some people claim them to be. Anyway lets hope the guys behind LotRO actually listen to their testers unlike the Turbine people behind DDO...
Before someone claims that im just a LotRO hater im gonna say that if I have never wanted MMORPG succeed more than here but it just sounds so similar to DDO...beta leaks of how the game sucks people claiming its just DDO haters and most beta testers are having too much fun to post etc.
Well considering that alpha just started a few days ago and people are now just being accepted. Anyone who would make a decision about a game this early in testing i wouldn't trust. This is the first wave a outside testers allowed in. The game will naturally not be finished or look to good considering all of the bugs that are floating around in the game causing trouble.
Now if this was the end of closed beta and they still felt this way i would put some merit in the fact they stuck with the game thru all of the bug fixes and actually tested it for more than a few days. If after all of this time they still found the game to be no good then i would listen. It wouldn't stop me from trying it out myself in open beta. I am one of those who don't listen to the critics i like to see what games and movies are like myself and make my owne decision.

Yep definetly time to improve and I too will give LotRO a try no matter what kind of reviews it gets

The recently leaked video is REALLY old. The combat has been sped up since. Turbine is "less than happy" that the video was released without their consent. Still, for a severely dated video, it doesn't look all that bad. I don't really see what all of the fuss was about...the gameplay looked smooth enough to me, the graphics looked really good (compared to MMOs out today, read: SWG, WoW). If you watched the video from the live feed on LotROSource, you would have seen the combat sped up, the quests in action, the gameplay is running even more smoothly. I'm pretty pumped.
Wow. You haven't even seen the game, and you say it will fail. You must have some crazy uber future-seeing ability.

North America Beta Signups has received approximately 106,000 submissions European (Codemasters) Beta Signups is about 120,000, I don't think people are getting fed up. Some of us have been waiting for 6 years for this game, so now the Beta is about to begin, there is a great renewal in our dedication and motivation to play the game, LOTR is not a hype........... Not at all.......
THe combat slow comment was made from a video that was shown, although it turned out that the video was old footage and that the combat has been sped up to a good speed so the combat is no longer too slow apparently.
It has been said by developers that the combat speed can even still be increased during beta during beta feedback, and the video out there is slower than it currently is anyway.
Minimal PVP does not mean a game will fail. Sure it will fail among those who only want to pvp, but despite what all those people say they are not the innumeroud Gods they think they are.
Of course if you get your kicks off of being negative and hoping illwill towards this game and its fans, nothing will change that sad state of mind, so post whatever you want. i and many others look forward to being able to contribute to this game ourselves.
6 years of hype? Imagine what the fallout will be if this game does not perform up to expectations. Its much to early to say if this game will fail or be succesful, but doesn't it smell funny that Turbine some how acquired the two biggest IP's in Fantasy?

But besides the poor troll attempt, I will at least give LotRO a try, I hate Turbine with a vengeance, but because it's Middle-Earth, I'm willing to give it a fair shot.
The game play video that was released was out-of-date, and the devs have said in no uncertain terms combat speed is one of the major issues to be worked out during alpha/beta. See this thread.
Some people's personal worlds dont' realize that millions of readers know what LotR is. Many more millions of people than any MMO title out there now.
It wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility that people who don't already play MMO's would play this one. My family has 3 generations of readers of all the books. I'm the only one who could get through the Silmarillion though.
This same point was brought up w/ Dark and Light. The devs caved in and released SoG only to scare off half hte people still waiting for it. Then released the actual game only to chase away the remaining players.
Game developers should never listen to the give up everyone's petered out on waiting. Only a few people who have nothing else to do in life actually loose interest before the game is even made.
If people want an ultimate PvP experience and can't wait for lotro, go play chess or some go.

What exactly is "Too slow" ?

It really only comes down to some people's opinion. Problem is they think their experience is valid enough to judge for other people....
But will it be meaningful?
