Now that I have my new computer I am trying out EQ2 again because my old system could barely play it with everything on low.
My new setup is:
Nvidia 7600GT 256mb
1 gig of RAM (though this will be up to 2 gigs once I come back from vacation in a week)
AMD Athalon 64 X2 3800+
So far I am very impressed with the card. I am running BF2 with everything on full settings and still pushing out 40+ FPS most of the time. Oblivion also plays very well with most everything on high except HDR and some of the shadow effects. With EQ2 I am impressed with my new system, but still sorta dissapointed at the performance I am getting.
I am running the game at balanced settings and depending on the place I can still get pretty crappy FPS. Dont get me wrong though. I am now addicted to the game now that I can actually play it with ok looking graphics. Is this everybodies experience with the game, that even on sorta higher end computer it doesnt run all that great? It still looks pretty cool. The textures look good, I can actually see the rings in my chain mail and the individual stones on walls/floors. Light now reflects from my armor and other things and the view distance is pretty far. Spell effects are pretty amazing too.
Once I have that second 1gb of RAM will I see some improvement? And last I remember there being a guide when EQ2 first came out that was on the forums detailing things you could do to improve frame rate, such as which settings gave the best performance and look but didnt impact FPS that much. Thanks for any tips.

I've used the second link since I started playing and have optimized the games performance on my PC. I am very happy with the way EQ2 looks and runs on my system.
Your new PC looks as if it can give you good quality and performance, just follow the guide and adjust as you see fit.
It did take me quite a while, messing around with details here and there while I played, to finally get it perfect for my taste.
I need to find time to tweak my settings. Right now I just have it on maximum quality I get about 20-25FPS on average, which is perfectly playable. But I do need to make time to go through the settings and see if I Can squeese 40fps without giving up any quality.

Use FRAPS, best fps tool ive ever used. Fraps.com
Personally I just upgraded to a
x2 3800
x1800xt
2gb DDR2 800 ram
ALmost everything is maxed and its nice and playable for me. Enjoying it quite a bit more than with my 6800gs.
As I play the game my FPS goes down.. probably has something to do with the memory leak I keep hearing about.
On a fresh boot I get 20-25 FPS in the city with all shadows on and textures at maximum. Once I've been playing for a while I get 9-14FPS.

Can't WAIT!
I just upgraded to:
AMD 64 x2 4400
GeForce 7950 GX2 (512g X 2) (running at 16x on PCI-E)
2 gig RAM
I can play EQ2 fully loaded now and it is great. It did peak my interest in the game again. My biggest issue is that I feel it almost *too* gritty or they are attempting to be too realistic in a sense.

I don't think any system can run EQ2 without having some choppy fps, seems there is a huge memory leak, most users have to reboot after a couple hours into playing because the fps starts to get lower.
I'm not sure if its poor optimization or memory leak, but i doubt that your hardware can fix it.
The grapichs are good and gameplay is decent, so i would not recommend upgrading your rams, as i doubt it will make any difference to the game.
Helpful tip, turn of your enviroment shadows and some particle effects, it will increase the performance alot, it worked well for me.
I don't have choppy graphics at all and I have everything at max.
I just think it has a little too much grit.
An increase in RAM would definitely improve his CPU performance, but there is no guarantee it would help if the problem is graphics. I wouldn't recommend against getting more RAM.

Many thanks!
And for those interested: I discovered the problem to my stuttering: my virus scan. Although I disabled the bugger, it still kept the game stuttering. I completely uninstalled it and I haven't had the game stutter since- even when I put everything to max.
So, if you are having stutter problems and you have your virus scan/firewall set to "off"- still try it with the virus scan uninsalled completely. This may make it better. (for interested parties- I was using McAfee. I DO NOT recommend it).
