- A Newbie Linkshell. I think it would be great if ever new character started out a member of a new Linkshell. Most MMO's these days have Newbie channels or Newbie Guilds for new players and I have always found that to be useful. This LS pearl could be destroyed after say lvl 20 or something to help keep it clean. -shrug-
- Buff/Debuff Food/Drink onscreen durations
- No Level Down. Maybe add a Exp Debt or something if you would have lost enough exp to level down. Its is so harsh and disheartening to lose a level and possible spells/abilites/weapon/armor/
- Quest Indicators. I know they can be cheesy sometimes in their implementation but some suibtle visible indicator that the npc has a quest/mission for your level/rank/class would be very nice.
- AH. Make Items being sold in the AH that can be bought from a npc vendor have identifyig mark or color
- UI. I know there isnt much that can be done with the ui due to multiplatform issues and all but I think a few small chnages would be nice. A greater selection of backgrounds or custom backgrounds. A selection of Font style and Size(not dependant on resolution). Better spell/ability descriptions with mp/tp used, duration etc.
I havent been playing FFXi very long, but these seem to me to be some possitive suggestions that would improve the game; especialy for new players without making it "easymode" as Im sure some will say.

Onscreen durations? Most food lasts 30 minutes. Or an hour. Just look it up online, and remember when you ate it. Not very hard at all.
Leveling down is what makes this game FUN. It's called a risk, unlike other games where you die, homepoint, run back to your body, and keep going.
So you want, like in WoW, big ? or ! marks over NPC's heads? Way to kill the immersiveness. No thanks.
You may notice that games with XP debt tend to have less high-level content.
Final Fantasy XI has a wide range of high level content. Strategies for a lot of it would be dramatically different at 75 (the level cap) without the risk of leveling down. I agree it can be harsh to lose acess to armor, but the XP loss isn't that large. Don't forget that you can relevel after death if enough XP is restored via a Raise spell.

Looking back over your post history you really have a thing against WOW. Did Blizzard kill your kitty or something? Seriously though, Im not just talking about food but buffs too. Leveling down FUN, huh? our Ideas of fun vary alot then. I agree there needs to be risk in death I even agree with exp loss but level down is just wrong IMO. I cant think of another game MMO or even single player that has level down.
I said im my post that Id like to see a quest indicator and there are plenty of ways to do it that dont break precious immersivness.

a) leveling down adds a sort of real life twist. you would care if you die in real life so you should care if you die in a game. it adds a sort of strength to your character. you die once and learn your mistake. in any othe MMO you die and just go back, not caring that you died.
b)FFXI does have the best community. in order for ppl to talk to you, you have to make an effort to make friends. if you have Friends the life in Vanadiel will become much more easier
c) Everyone should read the manual. that has tones of useful info in it.
i believe that FFXI is one of the best MMOs out there any uneeded changes will just ruin the perfectness of it. we dont want another SWG here
Don't get me wrong, I agreed with some of your posts, but the fact that all of them aren't implemented is probably why there are a lack of new players. Those of us that passes the learning curve and got passed the newbie part of the game like the way it is and keep playing, but new players to the game may be, and are, scared away.
However, I've never had the problems with the community that you've had.. there was always someone online for me to talk to. I guess it helps that there are two "worlds" playing this game, so no matter what time you're on, someone from somewhere should be on. The translator helps bridge the gap between our "worlds" and makes communication easier.
Yes, newbies sometimes are isolated, but I guess it's all the roll of the dice based on what server you are put onto.
