    Guildwars
    World of Warcraft

I don't think people seem to understand the concept of grinding.  Grinding is doing any activity more than once in hopes of some sort of advancement.  Which, if you really think about it, means EVERYTHING is a grind.  The question is what kind of grind is the game and how interesting is the grind.  Hell, real life is a grind too.  You keep dating to try and find someone special (or just get laid), you keep working to make money, and you keep buying shit to make your life more comfortable or enjoyable.  The only thing you get to choose is which grind you're going to go with.

The reason I said not to list Wow and Guild wars is I have played them both. In WoW I had a 60 hunter/60 shaman hunter was alliance shaman was horde. The game was a grind for exp then for gold and equipment. Out of the two if I had to play one I would pick WoW over guildwars everytime for the sheer fact I found guildwars to be one of the most boring games out there and I didn't like its pvp system.

I actually enjoyed WoWs pvp to a certain extent and played it for awhile before I got sick of having to spend my life on it to get anything done. I am going to see how infinity goes right now its rakion which has held me much longer then guild wars even:P over 6 months off and on. I've looked at most mmorpg's at least a description of them and yeah it seems there is no real good one out there at the moment but I would say WoW outdoes all the mmorpgs right now because unlike Everquest it doesn't take 8 hours to gain a level. Don't get me wrong everquest was the king and still is kinda even if people don't play it a lot because of the exploration/tradeskills/etc.

I did play planetside for awhile and the mmofps didn't have grinding because all there was, was pvp/driving a dropship etc it has enough players to make some big battles still too.

Skill based games tend to give a nice illusion of no grind thus i personally tend to favour them when it comes to the grind issue.

While in reality you are grinding since there is no levels and only skill rise the effect is you don't feel it as much.

Ultima online did it the best.

Exactly ;D The best games we find are the ones that we feel are not a grind.  Technically its all a grind, but of course we all have personal likes and dislikes, and each game will come off a little differently to us.  When people find a game they geniunely like, its usually because it has the illusion of no grinding (for them).

You don't want a non-grinding MMO, you need to find the type of grind that you find fun.

Why some people are stubborn in trying to fin an MMO to play, when they dislike various basic mechanics of the genre, baffles me. It'd be like me wanting a FPS that didn't require shooting precision or a RTS that didn't require strategy.

MMOs aren't for everybody. Sometimes you just gotta accept that and find another kind of game to play.

I'm kind of in the same boat, i'd love to see a non GRIND MMO.  But obviously its hard.  I found that even EVE had a bit of grinding as in having to do massive cargo runs that take ages (like 40 jumps and shite to get somewhere) or mining that takes ages and i just lost patience and after the trial period didn't continue.

Also I'd like to see a game that has NON MASS party endgame stuff like WoW does.  That TO ME is MORE important than non Grind.  SHould i make a new thread to ask about this or is there one already created?

Point me in the right direction?

    cheers,

    GoT

Technically everything is a grind that is true:P However let me ask you this what would you enjoy more whacking a pixel that bites at you every 3 seconds for 3 months 8 hours a day or doding bullets running on walls spinning off pillars/ diving side to side backwards and forwards shooting people and having a fast paced good time. A lot of people would prefer the latter concept these days(maybe not the guns and the game I was refering to was gunz:P www.gunzonline.com) The concept of a skill based mmorpg is actually coming to life and once someone makes it so you can kill something based on you not your equipment they are going to have made a lot of money/de-throne some of the current popular titles.

These mmorpgs that don't really have levels and are twitchy kinda with heavy RPG elements in it will attract many different types of people. These could be played by both casual pvpers/heavy pvpers/everyone else at their OWN pace and they could have fun from the time they log on till they time they log off.... unlike most mmorpgs where you hate your life until you hit the max level so you can pvp which is all you wanted to do in the first place or get shiny new equipment over and over and over.

Some of those PvErs hate their jobs to but they still do them. I used to play everquest, planetside(that was a fun game seriously),star wars galaxies, and world of warcraft and guildwars(worst of all of these for me). So no not everyone who likes PvE likes whacking a pixel that just looks different and has a few different attacks while they consume soda/coffee to keep from falling asleep >_<. But the new wave of mmorpgs should challange the "cookie cutter" auto-attack mmorpgs and maybe they will make one with auto-attack that won't be a grindfest. From what I understand a lot of people on this forum hate most mmorpgs these days as well and want refund on their 5 years of life spent on them:P

    OH HERE HERE!!!!

The man understands as do many many many other people that i've been talking to lately.  WHEN are we going to see an MMO that dosn't make us regret the loss of years wasted on it?  I was majorly suckered in by WoW at the start. I was an explorer more than a power leveler. I was running around on the other side of the world exploring enemy start locations when all my buddies were hurridly leveling.  I  had fun attacking crossroads killing some stupid shop guy and enjoyed being the only non horde at Ratchet because i had heaps of early PvP fun with those silly little horde questing over there. But soon things got sour and you all know the rest because you've all experienced it.  Once it becomes a GRIND at 60 and a "you MUST raid every night or not get your raid points" and "oh i've got this epic sword and you dont" whhooopdeeeedoooo.  could i ever have justifed NOT quitting? NO.

Give us the NON Grind MMO.  Give us the SKILLful MMO where it takes a bit of skill to play.  Give us some REAL Rollplaying (what ever happened to the skills of 'climb, bluff and disguise?' these are role playing skills in NO MMO that i know of).

Just PLEASE dear Game designers. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.  I want to play an MMO that dosn't consume my whole life? When do u understand finally that I CAN BE HAPPY to only play 3 or 4 hours a week instead of 35 hours a week and STILL be happy to pay you a monthly FEE??? Of course people will do this!!!  Most of us are adults who work full time and the kids who play have nothing better to spend their cash on anyway!

GIVE US WHAT WE WANT. There are enough serious games out there for the serious players, now lets market to the other market!

DDO doesn't have climb and disguise, but it does have bluff, jump, balance, spot, listen, diplomacy, haggle, tumble, intimidate, etc.  And they ARE useful.  If you wear platemail and have a crap jump score, you're going to miss some ledges and fall.  A jump score of 30 and you're like a boyhood Clark Kent.  A tumble of 30 and you can backflip away from a monster before his swing connects.  Diplomacy out of combat might save you from paying 10k gold to a quest giver or let you avoid a fight with a fire giant, while in combat diplomacy might save your wizard from getting killed by ten monsters after throwing a fireball at them.

It's not being able to change the shape of the world with your skills, but it's something.

Sounds like you liked WoW up till 60.  You beat the game, and that's that.  I like exploring in WoW more than fighting, too.  Problem is you still have to level up if you don't want to be one-shotted while exploring.  I tried the sneaky thief route, but anything 5 or so levels higher still sees you no problem.  Too bad WoW doesn't have a god mode. :)
