Same reason why you play solo.
Though i really get sick and tired of doing LFG for 2 hours when finally i get a group thats full of people i kinda hate :-/, so i just end up trying to survive on my own..not depending on anyone else. There's kinda some roleplay value in that (meaning you play as the lone ranger).

I'm a fan of ffxi because of the group system.
Solo? Heck no, That isn't fun at all....
You don't make friends or actually have fun in mmo's by soloing the entire game.
Neptus - FFXI - Pandemonium
Neptus - WoW - Detheroc
i just group with my guild but i have about 3-4 people with me while i do quest my guild is so big that there is always someone doing the same quests i'm doing.
Essentially I'm not too fussy and do a bit of each.
i think the question gives the anser , whats the point of a mmo if you dont play in groups ? i love guildwars becose its group based , i use to play a lot of single player games , after internet came i can only play online games so i can join other people and share fun with them.
becose guildwars was made to be played in groups , even you have the henchs option , most people play pugs , its not that hard to fit in a group , thats why i love it. and that is the reason i didnt like wow that much , i was used to join pugs all the time in gw , when i tryed 14 day trial of wow , i enjoyed the game , but not the social game play , i felt alone , i found hard even to talk with a random person. imo mmos only make sence in group mode.

I'm a solo player myself because:
- Repeating "LFG UBER QUEST THAT MY PROFESSION SUCKS AT THAT BUT I'M FORCED TO COMPLETE TO CONTINUE THE GAME" for five million years is very unappealing.
- JERKS: other people in the group can be complete morons. I cannot stand the stupid idiot who aggros every mob he possibly can and gets the entire group killed and BLAMES THE HEALERS. Then there are the idiots who agree and guess whos out of a team a few minutes later? (No, not the moron.... ). Now dont get me wrong, I can forgive people's mistakes, but when they keep getting the group killed/almost killed OVER and OVER and OVER again and they blame YOU without taking into account their actions, it gets quite irritating.
- Greed: Ok, this is a personality flaw of mine but I'd rather have the loot to myself than be forced to share it especially when idiots like the one in the second reason i stated are in the group. In most games, I can solo almost everywhere just fine. This complaint is pretty much exclusive to guild wars, where soloing is very difficult/impossible depending on your profession.
- I'm also a hermit. Get away from my cave!
Although i dont mind joining a team once in a while
I solo alot, particularly because I often have to "pause" my play-time for RL duties, or only have an hour or so for a session, both of which bug the hell out of most groups.
That's why I love Guild Wars, I can solo whenever I need to, but it's always easy to find a good pick-up group (or guildies) when I want (or in Factions...NEED) to group to finish a mission.
I do not group in an MMO unless I've gotten into a guild and am grouping with guildies. I hate random pick-up groups because the teammates are so often ass-hats...

I feel its important a game takes a more "balanced" approach. I really dislike how the newer games pick out and tell us what is solo and what is group (or raid) Are we all idiots and can't tell from the "con" system a mob is to difficult to solo??? This artificial division just pisses people off.
EQII is a great example of the moronic barrier of "group vs solo" content. Click on a mob and it pre-selects 4 of them for you. SHAZAM! The devs made group content! Click on a badger and it only selects one.......quick get marketing we can advertise solo and group content now!
I solo when I don't have a lot of time to play (less then 1 or2 hours maybe) which is frequent on weekdays but soloing is dull so I like to group when I have more time. (the logic here is ground breaking, isn't it?)
Balance is the key. These devs who keep trying to fit everyone into these "group", "solo" or "raid" exclusive games are just hurting themselves because to focus on one leaves the others out. (lighting bolt please!)
Depends on situation.
Usually you get faster XP in group, so solo is waste of time. Certain games on certain servers have HUGE XP bonus for party, obivously nobody will go solo even solo can be done no problem. Some games try to force group...by making solo = suicide...which I dislike. People should be able to have their own choices. Solo, small group, big group, all good from time to time, nobody should be forced to do anything. But I agree that the system should be set to encourage people grouping by giving xp bonus, not by making solo = suicide.
The most important thing for grouping is, you will need some loyal relable friends, or clanmates. For some games, as some people already mentioned that it takes a long time to form a group, then some random people would quit half way or maybe just started and ruin it...or someone who doesn't know what to do get everyone killed.
I tend to solo for a few reasons.
First of all is the fact that I enjoy being able to get up to take a piss or let my dog out without having to interrupt half a dozen other people's play time. Then there's the problem of how long it generally takes to find a group in any forced group situation, (instance run, FFXI, that sort of thing) which in a solo environment.. I could accomplish something instead of sitting around waiting. Also, I tend to play at off-peak times, which makes finding groups even more of a hassle.
Of course, there's also the fact that I'm an ass who doesn't generally get along with other people.

I play online MMO's for the teamwork and thus grouping, it adds more spice to a game. More interaction, more fun and sometimes more frustration too heh.
If I wanted to solo I'd play Morrowind still.
1,I like you play wierd hours and might have to stop playing quickly
2,I have never easily made friends in Games/online I always seem to be ignored

See the point? Being in a mmorpg is about being part of a greater group, not a 6 man group grinding together.

very well thought out reply. plus, in a lot of these games, if you cancel your account, your toons are still there months later if you reactivate it. if you want to keep your toons in a single player game, you have to save files and remember to not delete them, if the game even lets you do that.

Anyway I think playing solo in MMOGs is just boring.
Of course it depends on the game you play.
I used to play Neocron and there it wasn´t only boring but also quite dangerous to solo.
I´d always prefer playing in a group, but still I think that playing solo should be possible(in some games you´ll really have a hard time doing so).
I also do it sometimes. But as I said, it´s just less fun.
