Ok so Bioware bought the engine for their first and new MMO. I am pretty sure their game will be like NWN's Online or Balders Gate Online... when that happens what will all of you do?
I can't really choose here. I never went to DDO and only play the free trials. I'm still clinging on hope that they fix this mess of a game, so I lurk in the forums in hopes to hear something new.
But if they do make the game like NWN or Bolder's Gates, I'll be checking it out.
Originally posted by Longswd It won't be a D&D MMO, Turdbone has the exclusive rights to MMOs based on the D&D franchise (unfortunately).
I would be curious to the exact wording of these rights.
Turbines has some rights, but covering all D&D products? I doubt it. DragonLance is a different copyright than Forgotten Realms or Eberron.
Maybe Turbines also has the rights for the newest edition, I am sooo sure BioWare would cry having to work from the 2nd and be limited to a world like DragonLance!
Not to mention that the original D&D, prior advanced version, could easily be worked out, it already have a system for making ascension as a God and so on...
At worst, Magic The Gathering(tm) could be used and the D&D rules copy/paste for the world and Turbines doesn't have a word to say into this. With some mini-games about wizards fighting each other with ressources and lands, minions and spells! Turbines has rights over the use of the D&D stuff, not about it been copied over to other products and renamed Dragons and Dungeons, WotC hold all these rights as the owner of the product.
Finally, and not the least, Turbines wouldn't be wise to sit on these rights if WotC is displeased with DDO and want to advances the property furthermore, as it would be easy to make sure that the fans knows where the source of the problem is...and the rights over a game that doesn't sell well are not of the same worth of a game that sells wells. The Franchise is strong, the game, DDO, is not. I can understand peoples trying to make money by holding over some "rights" when they fail to deliver the merchandise, but I don't think Turbines is THAT low yet. A strong franchise gains by been developped, by been produced, not by been shy away...would a company love to see it name beside the reason why the MOST popular franchise is on hold? I don't think so. These rights are worth only as much as DDO is successful, if it isn't successful, then they are worth very little. ATM, Turbines would prolly be happy if they are the folks who developp the banner of the next D&D product. The idea of these rights is to prevent competition, but if you aren't successful enough, there is nothing to protect, which invalidate on a moral level any right you may claim to.
I am also pretty sure that, if BioWare make a SEQUEL/EXPANSION, it supercede any right Turbines may have sign with WotC, as long as WotC agree. I am pretty sure that these rights doesn't include a notice to prevent an existing title to expand and developp... and BioWare has plenty of choice for titles in the D&D universe to expand from, just call it a Planescape/ID/BG expansion even if it has little to do with the original if Turbines wanna be @$$ about some rights.

I will probably check out whatever Bioware does. They did a bang up job on NWN. Even if it's not a official D&D game I am sure it'll be closer to a D&D/RPG than the crap that is DD0.
i never thought id say it but turbine actually seem to be making positive moves
also the design of ddo means i reckon i could play both, unles the bioware one is really like bg or nwn then ill be sucked into the story for years lol
Three cheers for NWN2 persistant worlds, that's what I'm waiting for. That or the day ddo doesn't have a subscription fee (the only thing keeping me from playing this game).
