Hi, I recently decided to shutdown my WoW account (my first and only MMO). I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a casual gamer who is looking for new game that doesn't require 8billion hours a week of playing to advance in.
I'd prefer non-spacey/sci-fi stuff.
Thanks in advance :P

I would try UO (Ultima Online)....
Once you get the hang of the game, it will keep you coming back for years, I've been playing on and off since '97 now. The graphics are a little dated, but if you can get past that and give the game a real chance it'll blow your socks off.
There are two kinds of mmorpg players...
One kind is the hunter,
The other is the hunted.
Which one are you?
dragon fable - http://www.dragonfable.com/
and Adventure quest - http://www.battleon.com/
it is a browser based RPG so no download requierd
Every MMO has at least free trial so you can freely try them all. If you have really good PC with at least 1Gb ram you could try EQ2 Trial of the Isle. It requires really good comp or it can be huge lag fest in cities.
EVE Online is another good one, there's 14 day trial on it's site.
I'd try everquest II if I were you. It's pretty damn easy to pick up on, and doesn't take that much time to get anywhere realy.
And also, deaths don't matter at all in that game like WoW.
I'd suggest Guild Wars (surprise!), far more casual than WoW and a better game too...
Plus, it's free forever (once you buy the box), what's not to like.
Funny how no one ever gives REASONS why they don't like GW...
What was it you didn't like?
The fact that it's got NO grind?
The skill it takes to play the game well?
The lack of possibilities for griefing/pking/kill-stealing?
The well designed and challenging mission and quests?
The regular events and content additions (for free)?
The lack of a monthly fee?
The many, varied and interesting character builds and combinations?
The massive and engrossing endgame (both in PvE and PvP)?
EDIT: Oh, hang on you couldn't have experienced all that...you played it less than a week
The only MMO out there what would fit this is Guild Wars.
Its a very good game although not a true MMO. The community leaves a bit to be desired but its free to play after all
There really isn't much to dislike about it. Its solid, well designed, fast paced and attractive. The missions are alot of fun to play and have some interesting elements. The skill system is somewhat unconventional but fresh and diverse.
There is a storyline so its a bit linear but it beats the usual "go kill 10 rats" or "bring me 10 (fill in the blank) type junk that everyone thinks is so great nowadays. You might have some longevity issues with it but they are always adding to it. Best part is you can take a break for however long you want and pick it up again hassle free.
All in all its a fun, well made game.

Any particular reason other then to just buy it then resell it?
I think the key word here is "CASUAL" .... Guild wars is more suited for a casual gamer IMHO, the lack of a monthly fee is nice, with no monthly fee I do not feel that I have to play to get my money's worth, if I want to stop playing for a month I can and not feel like I am wasting $12-$15.
The game is fun, different in some areas but still easy to learn, I agree that the community is not the best you could hope for but lately I have not seen to many good communities in games. I do believe that there is a lot of great players in GW and they are helpful and are also good players not the haxor kids that you find in WOW and most others.
Try Guild wars or just look into it .....
Witty saying to amuse you goes here.
Some people just get bored with guild wars the gameplay is slow your character auto-follows and you watch him swing his weapon all you do is push the 1-8 keys after you got the skills/skillpoints you want. If you want a free game that might be exciting however:O
http://rakion.softnyx.net -hack'n slash online not auto attack based on you think of dynasty warriors except you do pvp 90% of the time with some stages if you want.
www.gunzonline.com - think the matrix because thats what this game will remind you of fly all over with a sword if you get good at it or.... dive all over run up/over walls with guns have fun!.
Both of these since they are 3rd person fps (at least gunz is) can be played quite casually and you can have fun from the time you log in till you log off unlike a lot of mmorpgs where the fun part is at the end of the game 2 months later. Guild wars doesn't have a bad community don't get me wrong its just the fighting is some of the most boring ive ever done next to some really old games =/=
I couldn't disagree more.
Compared to GW the fighting in other MMORPGs is slow and boring! One mob-fight can take ages in some MMOs, consisting of pushing the same buttons in the same order over and over. In GW you can clear whole spawns of mobs in that time, with varied tactics, skills and techniques (depending on what particular skills the mobs have)...or if you're not on your game...they can clear you, and your 8-person party in under a minute If I was to fault GW combat in anything it would be that it can get too chaotic sometimes, making it impossible to track everything that's going on.
Well, to each their own I guess, that's why everyone should try most things for themselves. (Though if a game is crappy most people will agree on that point)
In a nutshell, the combat systems of most MMO's are roughly the same. WoW/GW/DAoC/L2/FFXI/EQII/EQ/RFO/CoX/Ryzom is auto attack while you manage your specials. The primary difference might be the speed of the combat or assorted effects. DAoC is noticably slower paced then WoW or L2 for example.....
Only a few games have gone with any "dynamic" fighting....SWG - NGE and DDO but they are both trainwrecks or maybe Planetside because its FPS....(dont hammer me on EVE 'cause I don't know a gowd damn thing about it, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess its an auto attack based system also, call me a "risk taker")
PvE is pretty much PvE no matter what game you play....grind for levels.... unless you are doing a DYNAMIC mission or something with some purpose besides killing 10 rats or whatever for a shiney reward.....
not to much of that sort of thing in todays games. Gamers today seem pretty happy with their role as NPC deployed drones...how can 6.5 million people be wrong?
Achieve nothing after 12 hours flying through empty space on the way to nowhere intresting, measuring your progress in loading screens only.
Absolutely nothing casual about this one.
Guild Wars sounds very convincing as a casual game to me.
If you are traveling all the time in Eve, you are not playing the game right. I know Eve is a casual game, however OP stated he didn't want to play spacey/sci-fi stuff. Spacey/Sci-fi is Eve to the core. Asheron's Call is a casual game, but it doesn't have a free trial. I like Anarchy Online. It does have a sci-fi element to it, but it also has a fantasy element too. The expansions are totally different worlds. In the sci-fi area, missions are randomly generated from a mission booth. You can choose how difficult you want the mission to be and with the right mods, you can decide what loot you will receive when you complete the mission.
Edit: Note that both Asheron's Call and Anarchy Online are older games and the graphics are not as good as the newer generation games. Asheron's Call is very soloable and the population levels of the game are low.
don't have to spend countless hours on a leveling treadmill to get to
the interesting parts of the game, because combat is designed to be
strategically interesting and challenging right from the beginning. You
don't have to spend hours running around the world to prepare for a
quest, because Guild Wars allows you to instantly travel to the
beginning of any quest that you've previously unlocked. You'll never
spend days playing, only to discover that the choices you made early
have left you with a permanently uncompetitive character. HOpe it helps :-)
