Ive been playin FFXI for bout a month and a hafe now(not long)
but I hope this will help you make up your mind to try FFXI or not.
BASIC INFO
First off the game only cost $19.99 for PC and the comes with 2 exp packs (Good deal i think),
the monthly fee is only 12.00 and that real cheap conpared to alot of other MMO's.
ODDS AND ENDS
You will get a playonline mail account when you signing up along with alot of other
extras (E-cards, etc.).
you will also get 30 days free for FFXI and Terra master when you make a new account.
Im not going to go into terra master since i dont play it.
CHAR CREATION
After all that is said and done you will get to make your first char and start playing
char creation is pritty easy not like everquest 2 were you have to pick from 16 races.
In FFXI there are 5 races
Hume=A Human type race that is pritty well rounded,
Elvaan=A Elf type race
Mithra, Galka, and my favorate the TaruTaru
after that you can pick from 15 different jobs for your char. 6 standerd jobs and 9 extra jobs
standerd jobs are like warrior and white mage
and exrta jobs are like summoner and bard
im not gunna get into all of them so i dont spoil the game if u decide 2 play it
also you get to costumize your char look (hair type etc.)
after you do that ya get in the game. this MMO I didn't have a hard time getting in to matter of fact i had a
hard time getting out since i liked it so much
i mean if i didnt have a life i could easyly play this from sun up to sun up the next day.
but back to the subject. the game is not slow form the start i mean ya gotta lvl to 10 before the
fun realy starts but theres alot of little quest to do on the way. like one of them is bring "me 4 flint stones and ill pay ya for them" but i always found better things to do with my flint stones like make arrow heads we'll get
into that in a min tho. and i almost forgot to tell ya about the citys in FFXI that u will be apart of or 1 of them at lest
the citys are
Bastok (my hometown and if you pick a hume as your char make this your hometown to u will get a free ring)
Windurst, if you pick a taru go here u will get a free ring and on a side note i was questing here one time and the people in this city were very nice good friendly ppl i think and also this citys nickname is windy
San d'Oria, ive only been here a few times for the woodworker guild but i think if u are a elvaan u get a free ring and the city nickname is sandy
and then theres Jeuno witch is a npc and questing city. it is not home to anyone
back to questing and so forth
theres 8 crafting guilds that you can join
I joined the smithing, goldsmithing, and woodworkers guilds
its a good way to make good gil(gil is FFXI money) or make equipment for yourself
you make items by a process called Synthesis witch is a combo of a crystal, some items, and a mental image for etc. 2 Flint Stones+1 Fire crystal= 6Stone arrowheads or 12 i forget
ill leave the rest to you to figer out unless u ask cause i know alot of recipes for all guilds
onto Buy/Sell/trading items. were i get most of my gil from and were it ends up going back to later is the auction house or AH for short
the AH is like a small E-bay on FFXI, players stick items in to sell and others buy those items for that or more sum its a great way to get rich if you have the time and skill
my friends dont have the time nor want to deal with it, were i do and make say 200k of a batch of holly staffs i stuck in there 2 hours ago and then like a moron i glout about it and end up giving up 50k for lones that will never be payed back
this is part 1 of this help me decide thing ill get the rest up later and if i messed somethin im sure that someone will post it

Luckily, you will be in parties most of the time and many people will be very willing to help you out.
When you start, the *hardest* things are probably learning where the shops are and how to access your spells/skills (or using the menus in general) but the latter is covered in the manual and as long as you explore a bit you will find yourself very familiar with your starting city.
I thought it was real easy to pick up and start playin and what i didnt know i just ask other players. the ppl on FFXI aint shy at all matter a fact FFXI has a mentor program that has vet players that you can contact 24/7 in case u have a question also after you get into a linkshell the question you have will have awnser in a matter of seconds
what a linkshell is
a linkshell or a LS for short is a group of players that are connected at all time and not bound by land sea or air this means the whole group hears all LS chat, think of it as a unlimited range group chat this is allowed with a item called a linkperl only the LS leader can issue this to u
what class do i think would be best
well i picked a white mage or WHM for short since he or she deals in recovery spells and light magics and all parties need one so its no problem getting a party to let me join
i also have a black mage or BLM witch u might have guessed by now deals in black magic and offendive spells there very powerfull and make a good support attacker
then theres a red mage or RDM with is both WHM and BLM in one but with a few more perks such as he or she can wield heavyer armor or wepons and can learn spells that WHM and BLM cant But the draw back on a RDM is that it will take twice as long to learn a WHM or BLM spell(ex. WHM learns Cure II @ 11 RDM learns @ lvl 16) that was just a Ex. i dont realy know when a RDM does
If you like sitting back were its safe and fight pick one of the above if not look at these
Warror or WAR
War is a the frontline of the party and most of the time is the tank he deals in close combat I think the name saids it all lets move on
Monk i forget the short of it
i dont have much exp on this class but we did use 1 as a tank in a party ones and it hafe way worked so maybe some one that knows more about a monk can tell
and the last of the standerd jobs is the Thief
I donno alot about the Thief ether since i have no notion to be one
but thats the 6 standerd jobs you well pick from when you start if u decide to and i hope ya do its a great game
the exta jobs are there after u meet requierements
What Ever You Do
I still no nothing will not nothing but skillchains are hard to pull off for me
and off what Menchi_ko said about learning your city. im from bastok and it will take ya a good 10-15 min to wolk round that place but thats just the city this game is huge i swear it took me 1 and a hafe hour to go from bastok to windurst good think i had a escort just hit /follow and let him do the work lol

I'd mostly pick elvaan if i wanted to be a War since he would do the most damage elvaan are highly skilled in close and range combat but a galka would be good for this job do to the fact of its high defends and nice damage but not as powerfull as the elvaan
but if you would want to be a mage so sorts i'd pick a taru and my WHM is a taru. being a taru in a mage class gives you a high MP rate but not HP but if your party does whats it ment to then there should be no worrys also ive heard that a galka mage would be the most conserivtive but i didn't think ill try that thory anytime soon
now a galka as a monk would be a fitting pare do to the high HP and Damage
Mithra have a all around high evasion for almost all jobs so she would be most fitting for a thief
now humes like u said are well rounded for all jobs most of the time they have balanced HP/MP and to tell the truth my 1st char is a Hume/BLM and i have no conplantes i got good MP/HP and he kicks ass what more could i ask for
like i said be for its your char and u well have to decide on what most and what comes 1st and what u think u can do with out but i dont think makin a galka mage is a great idea i just wanted to put that in there
best fits for race/job
WAR/galka and elvaan
all mages/tarutaru and hume maybe mithra for RDM
Thief/Mithra
Monk/galka and elvaan
and thats all of them i hope this helps

Also, props to Necromage. Lots of good information.
Ben
As far as stats go, I'll List through what I know:
Galka - Highest HP, Highest Vit, 2nd Highest Str, 3rd Highest Dex (I think..), Low Chr (tied with Mithra)
Elvaan - 2nd Highest HP, Highest Str, Highest Mnd, Lowest Dex, 2nd Lowest MP
Hume - Well rounded, Kinda Average on everything
Tarutaru - Highest MP, Highest Int, Highest Chr, 2nd Highest Dex, Lowest HP.
Mithra - Highest Dex, Highest Agi, Low Chr(tied with Galka)
Str is a variable in Attack & damage.
Dex is a variable dealing with Critical percent chance & Accuracy (roughly 2dex=1 acc)
Vit is a variable of defence, Vit determines your potential minimum damage recieved each hit.
Agi is a variable dealing with evasion, Ranged accuracy, & parrying.
Int lowers the chance of you're spell to be resisted by a mob, which would cause it to do lower damage or not any effect at all. (Basically magic attack)
Mnd increases your healing potential, Like Int it lowers the chance to resist White mage type spells (exampe: Paralyze).
Chr is partly unknown to what all it does, for a Bst it increases the success rate on Charm, and for a bard the success rate of landing songs on mobs (Sorta like Int for a blm).
There is equpment, called RSE (Race Specific Equipment), Only your Race can use it, and basically it gives you what your race lacks. Like a Galka's RSE would give +Mp, +mnd, +Int, while a Taru's +Hp, +Vit, +Str. (The first 4 pieces are lvls 27,29,31, & 33. ) They are questable and open to anyone.
ya i didnt think ppl would post much here thats just my luck anyways sorry bout not gettin part 2 up yet but the truth is that theres realy not that much left to tell for beginers and another thing is
i messed up that recipe for the stone arrow heads the real one is
2 flint stones+1 Wind crystal not fire

What Ever You Do
If I could, I would so sticky this thread.
This thread answers the tens of threads created every day for this game.
ex. "Should I try this game?"
Sticky this thread Please!
You have done a great job collecting all the information.
Though..., there are a bunch of links to find out info; we all know people are too lazy to do it.
Good Job.

Few jobs that get fast invites, most have to wait a long time for invite or start your own party.
You can only level up in a party (unless BST or PUP). Parties usually take an hour to find the members, unless your lucky. All members in the party have to be within 2 levels of each other, or your exp will greatly decrease. Then you have to all get to the camping spot, and if theres no one currently partying there, you can fight. If you choose to solo after lv 15~, you'll most likley only be able to fight EP, which give an astounding 30~ exp. Would be good, except lv 50+ you need over 10,000 exp to level. Thats if you can even survive a solo fight, which after you'll have to rest for around 4 minutes.
GM's don't do anything to help FF. The most they normally do is "We'll look into that." which basically means "We'll look into that, after some lunch and errands." They never do anything about Real Money Traders, who end up ruining the game.
Most of the items in this game are overpriced, especially at christmas, when all the rich boys and girls get money from their parents to buy gil. The way you buy items is at the Auction House (sure there are NPC's, but those are even more overpriced). The Auction house allows a seller to put up an item and it stays up there for about 5 days. The seller sets a price for that item(lets say 1000 gil) If someone bids on that item for 1000+ gil, they automatically get it. If they bid 999, they don't get it and it stays on the Auction House.Theres no waiting out the whole time period for the highest bidder, which means that almost always you will only get the price you sold the item for, no more.
If your looking for PvP, this is not the game for it. The only times you can actually fight another player is during Ballista, which is set times for PvP. There are level caps on the ballista( lv 60 or lower, 70 or lower, etc), you have to pay to join the ballista (around 1000 gil), and unless you have the right level of equipment for that level, you won't do good in the ballista. This creates problems for people who are between the caps(i.e. 35, 45, 55 etc). The good part about ballista is you can only gain EXP, not lose it.
Now, a big part of this game is end game. There are tons of HNM(high level monsters)/Dynamis linkshells, which means more competition. So some days you might wind up with 4 HNMls' camping the same monster, waiting for it to spawn. Thats usually about 100+ people, all in the same small area. Now HNM's are also dominated by RMTs, whoa re still joining the games in droves.
I guess i shouldn't be totally bashing this game. SE does make it look good, PC graphics are awesome. Also theres always atleast 1500 people on at one time, and most people have more than one job leveled. There are hundreds of quests and missions, which can keep you occupied trying to complete them all.
You are also able to change nations which allows for more diverse playing, as you can basically do everything on the same character (job, quests, missions, areas). The only thing you can not level up completely is the crafting skill levels, which allows you to have one craft up to level 100 and the others at lv 60. There are also over 10 different servers, each with their own economy and players. It does seem however that the scammers and bad players are on every story, as each week theres someone new that has lost their gear to a trade scam.
All in all, FFXI is a game that can somehow keep you playing for years to come, even thought SE still has alot of problems to fix like Gilsellers, PvP, auction houses and various more problems. So if you have the $13+ a month and a vast ammount of time to devote to FFXI, buy it. If not, you should probaly be looking elsewhere.
Evilelder, I've been playing FFXI since March 04, Which is about 2 1/2 years. I've gotten over 200days Playtime across my 3 characters. While some of what you stated was true, some of it is looking at the worst possible situations. (Unless you try really hard to suck, these don't happen too often.)
Of all the jobs, Whm, Rdm, Brd, Cor, & Nin are your all around fastest invite jobs (Thats 1-75 all around, at 75 with Merit parties some things change, but thats not important now) A party must consist of Healer/Support+Tank+Damage Dealers. This is where the problem begins, Because there are a few jobs that heal, a couple that can tank, and about 10 that can Deal damage (So you guys have to pray unless you make your own parties). Then Brd,Cor, & Rdm is support. (They make things go a whole lot smoother)
FFXI is heavily party oriented, but there are a few jobs that can solo effectivly. Beastmaster is #1, And can easilly solo 5-6k/hour(While in some of the new area's its possible to hit 10k/hour) the entire Beastmaster career. Next would be Summoner, Also very good soloers 3-4k/hour, It gets better as your lvl up. 3rd would be Dragoon. Drg/whm can solo 2-3k/hour While it may not be the best, its stilly pretty damn good expecially if you have limited playtime. I know Pup Can Solo, Just no info on them. Ninja and anything that subs ninja (Expecially PLD/NIN) can solo effectivly, I've met a few Pld's who've solo'd through a few of their lvls.
GM's ARE worthless, They rarely do anything.
When prices rise thats inflation, when they drop thats deflation. They're all parts of a normal economy, expecially one that may consist of about 10,000 People. Personally I'm still living off the money I made last Christmas from buying low and selling High.
PvP is only scheduled matches Such as Ballista which is Nation Vs Nation in Alliances, or Brenner Party Vs Party.
Endgame consist of Sky, Sea, Limbus, Dynamis, & HNM's. Endgame is all about equipment, Where you Camp XXX NM to get YYY Item to spawn ZZZ NM to get Loot & Another item to spawn AAA NM and so on... Dynamis is a bit diffrent, (Aside from they all have really low drop rate on items >.>) but you can schedual Dynamis where up to 64 People of your choosing can go in at a time.
All of positive stuff I agree, except there are 32 Servers not 10.
I've been playing for two years now and it looks all good to me.
Oooooooooooh well, he's trying to help the game instead of being one of those people who dis it because they can't get to level 75 in two weeks.
