I would go with Roma Victor. I had the pre sell key and was not even able to download it. Then I did and I was not able to log in...so I must admit, I stopped trying. A shame, I really wanted to try that out.

AO gets my vote too. Oh, that was an ugly, ugly launch. Nothing like paying $50 for a game you can't play to inspire some nasty community backlash, too. And AO was supposed to be the next big thing at the time.
Roma Victor sounds pretty bad too, though... Not really interested in that too much, so I guess I'll never know.

I was there for the AO launch and it gets my vote. Second would be DnL (a VERY close second) Third would be AC 2
The only reason AC 2 gets third instead of second worst is because atleast it was pleasant to look at while you did alot of nothing.

WoW had a horrible launch. mostly because they didnt have enough servers at launch and the lag was horrible. forget about using the auction house or mailbox during peak times lol

That and everyone gangpiled for the servers that had the word "heavy" next to them like they were gonna miss out on a lower pop server.

you had to admit that first few weeks there were no servers not on "heavy" during peak times heh
While I personally didn't experience it, I heard Mourning had a bad launch. I have to tend to agree witht that one since its not even around anymore. Well besides Thrones of Chaos but thats a different discussion.
I heard WWII online was really bad. AO also (EQ friend came back a day later after it came out bitching and moaning) WOW was only bad if you played on certain servers. I really had no problems with WOW's launch. Maybe 3 or 4 days that I couldn't play at all (which I wasn't charged for)
DoAC while having a smooth launch was half finished. No medium to high level equipment for a loooong time. Nothing like running around in grey armor and over half the dungeons weren't even itemized yet (no loot just coin.) Don't even get me started on RvR.
Ultima Online had a very horrid launch. The servers were down more then half of the time for the first few days and the came crashed constantly. I remember trying to play it and going thru walls and crashing and seeing my avatar slide like he was skiing, seeing 1000 swords falling from the sky when i tried to buy ONE from a vendor, all kinds of crazy junk. I also remember dying and being able to cut my own corpse into pieces (with what I have no idea)
DnL was pretty damn rugged. But UO was way up there in rough launches.
It's a toss up between SWG and Horizon. All of you saying DNL/WOW/Roma are just showing your age (either your to young to of experinced it or to old to remember). These newer games don't even come with in the same universe of suck as SWG/Horizon release.
I'd have to say Shadowbane hands down. It was ran by UBISOFT a big company with a lot of money and they still couldn't get the game fixed (to this day) it is ridden with game stopping bugs that were there are release and it's just all around possibly one of the worse developed games. If it wasn't for the fact that it has the best possible concept for a pvp game it would have completely tanked right away.
After a year of playing I had 3 fatal errors server side that ended up in me deleting the characters I had spent so much time on, and without an reimbursement because if they "did it for me they'd have to do it for everyone". Then there was the dupes, the constant new servers because of all the hacks... and so on and so forth. Shadowbane wins the cake.
Originally posted by holythough Originally posted by kahnz Of course, like most of the problems in the MMORPG world, we created this problem by accepting these horribly low standards. I mean if you bought a new car that broke down before you got it off the lot, you would go demand your money back right?
Wrong you just forgetting that mmorpg's are still at the beginning stages. If you take your example you should compare it with the cars at the beginning of this age people where glad to even had something like a car it was new and if it broke you just tryed to get somebody that fixed it you wouldn't dream of asking your money back. And WoW is like the early ford a company that makes a still underdevelopt crappy thing finally avaible to the big masses. It will still take a few years until they bring mmorpgs out that work withouth flaws from the start and even longer until you get them standard with something compared to a powered steering wheel(like almost no grind). At the moment developers are just glad that they have a general concept that works well enough to make people play
Elnator pretty much took care of that rebuttal for me, but I'd just like to say that when these games are released the companies KNOW they are not ready. They have seen how crazy people get on the day of release. They have done stress tests on their servers (and they usually preformed poorly). They have been running beta tests. They know about the problems that are going to surface when they go live, but they go live anyhow. All that crap about content is not relevent to opening day because all you need is the lowbie content (for the casual/semi-addicts) and places for the hardcore gamers to grind. The companies that publish these new games just want to cash in, and they don't care that its not ready. That is the shit that we should not put up with.
I do agree that MMORPGs are in their infancy but only conceptually. Mechanically, they are well into young adulthood. Game developers have had their grammar lessons; now they need to write some sonnets!
BTW I really think we need to cut Funcom a little slack with the AO launch. They DID create "the next big thing." They created a sci-fi MMORPG (skill based, no less). They also pushed the envelope with personal mission instances and made their game mostly city based. I'd bet much of the problem on launch was not because of Funcom, but because most of our machines simply couldn't handle the load. My comp was less than 6 months old and I had alot of problems with graphics overload

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

That was my first MMORPG game too. (Since Diablo 2 does not = an MMORPG.)
