quitting wow. where to now

So i've decided to quit wow, after 172 days played on my hunter,  full Tier 2 and 3 piece tier 3,  I can't do it anymore.  I've been spending every night from 7pm-2am on the game and I'd neglected my own health, animals, house and my wife.

I know I have an addiction but I can't stop w/ mmorpg's.  Basically i'm taking a break but would like to find a game that woudln't require my attention for hours on end...

I've had my eye on Phantasy Star Universe for a long time, I enjoyed the PSO game and I like that style of game(hack n slack level grind + unique weapons)

Any ideas of something else to play in the meantime that wouldn't have me in game for 5+hrs straight a night?  Or I shoudl say a game that wouldn't make me feel obligated to stay for 5 hrs at a time.

Im afraid its the nature and design of MMOs to cause addiction. I'm in the same situation you are and Im afraid there arent any MMOs worth playing that would allow for casual non addictive play for those who are admitedly predisposed to being addicted. I canceled all my MMo Subscriptions for a while and bought alot of single player games ( Oblivion, KoToR1/2, Fable, etc) but they only kept my attention for a short while.  I have 7 mmorpgs installed on my pc at this time and every few months i switch between them because besides having a addictive personality in regards to mmos I also get burned out really fast.

So my suggestion would be try a few single player games liek the ones I mentioned or if you have to be in a MMO try something like Saga of Ryzom. SoR has great crafting and the PVE aspect is fun but it isnt so uber lewt driven that you feel compeled to keep up with everyone else. Also, there are no levels to gain as in traditional mmos.

I pretty much had the same problem. I played WoW since the release and I just decided to quit. I am waiting for AoC, but until then, it's console games for me.

I quit WoW about 6 months ago, due to the exact same reason, couldnt keep playing the 'raiding' game.  I took a bit of a break from gaming played some of my old single player games, eventually picked up EQ2, although the more I play it, the more it feels like WoW.  Im still playing it atm, but no where near the amount of time I previously had spent on WoW.  It will prob keep me enterntained until something decent comes out though.

Have you tried EVE online? I think that it allows to play as much as you want at one sitting vs being forced to spend 4 hours each time you log in like WoW does.

A perfect example of why the WoW community is so rotten. Post reported.

Anyway, I did take a break from MMORPGs recently. Oblivion was a great distraction during that period. Being a single player game, it doesn't really force you into anything and there are so many ways you can approach it that it takes a while before it ends up feeling old. Also, as Ruthgar suggested, EVE might do the trick. It's certainly not for everyone (I found myself feeling lonely at times in the empty space and couldn't get used to "being a ship"), but I think it's a game that every MMO player should at least try because it breaks with old "fantasy kill x mobs to level" mold. Ask around on the EVE boards and I'm sure people will fill you in on what to expect as you progress in the game.

I'm a big ol' fluffy carewolf. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Seems like a typical WoW player on a PvP server. I quit because of the horrible community, if you can even call it a community, rather a confederacy of dunces.

Well first don't beat yourself up to much for that addiction, as someone said, it's an inherent design particularly with MMO's but a very real on.

If I were you, I'd back away completely from MMO's for awhile, take at least a good 6 months off. For the first few weeks you'll feel a little off and you wont be able to do any gaming, single player or not, period because it will just feel lame but after that you'll get over it and acclimated.

When gaming starts to effect your marriage and your health, yeah, don't replace it. Just walk away, you'll feel tons better when you come back and have a grasp of your gaming tendencies. Anyone who has played MMO's for a length of time has had to go through this, it's just your time, accept it, do whats needed and be done.

I suggest you start exercising instead of play MMO's.  This may sound trite, but it will tire you out and force you to sleep while at the same time satifying your urges (something MMO's do not do, they just occupy your mind for a while).

I am truly serious; in 3 months of say biking or going to the gym instead you will feel like a much better person.   MMO's and MUD's are not something that solve or sate in anyway, you should learn to be highly suspicous of them.  They are similar to alcohol.  Fun in moderation, bad in the extremes.  They are absorbing but never actually truly satisfying in any real way.

I recently quit WoW and went back to Guild Wars, just because of the grind and the amount of time it takes to accomplish anything, and I had a rank 11 Tauren Druid. It takes to much time and energy to keep trying to maintain rank. Not only that but the community in WoW is probably one of the worst I've seen out of several MMORPG's I have played.
