Graphics are in the eye of the beholder

A difference? Yes, I saw a difference. But a quality difference?

I went to each forum and ask for some current pix, since I no longer pay for many of these, but the response was... underwhelming...

so, tell me (should be easy): do you see a difference in these graphics?

I'm in the process of gathering more graphics...

Let us see this difference!!

There was a pretty noticable difference in graphics as far as I could see.

The game in the top left was far and away the worst of the lot.  The characters and environment are the least developed of all the screenshots.

As far as the best, I would give it to the top middle.  With the exception of the top left SS(which just looks bad, I wouldn't be surprised if someone said it was from a 2D game from the mid 90's), the graphics are fairly close in quality.  It's not extreme, but it is noticable.

    Just my two cents

Just an in-between post while I finalize the next graphic selection.

Based on critical exposes on EQ graphics and panjits comments, specifically, I'm putting these together for everyone (who bothers <lol>) to check out, grade, compare and basically whine about.

    What I'm collecting is;
In 1 graphic, a snipet from:
    Dark Age of Camelot
    EverQuest 1
    World of Warcraft
    Ultima Online
    Asheron's Call

Now, all of these are 3D games, however, UO is 3D Isomorph
AC 1 is not the same as AC 2 however I will be using graphics from both (but not at the same time)

The first graphic was "grass & trees".
    This graphic is Mounts

Again, this imagines are all from:
    Dark Age of Camelot
    EverQuest 1
    Ultima Online
    Asheron's Call (1 or 2)
    World of Warcraft

Pick out which image is from which game, shop, compare, use your coupons and tell me, what do you think?

UO is not REALLY a 3D game and isomorphic, or not, it isn't the same type of graphics as all the other games you're comparing.  Comparing UO, graphically, to any game and it's going to come out pretty low unless you just love the interface style of UO.  Because the graphics they used were meant to be similar/same to the Ultima games of the past.

I'm guessing since I've never seen mounts in DAOC, EQ1 or AC1. Starting from top left and working clockwise:

    WoW
    EQ
    AC
    DAOC
UO (the one in the center)

If my guess is correct, I'd order the ones I think look the best as:

    DAOC
    WoW
    EQ
    AC
    UO

If that is DAOC then wow, I never knew it looked so well. I'm assuming a major graphics overhaul happened because I wouldn't think a game could age that well.

    Ultima Online Expansions:
Third Dawn (March 7, 2001) The major change was that this expansion included a 3D client, no doubt to compete with 3D MMORPGs like EverQuest. Also, a special Third Dawn only land was created, called Ilshenar. It was accessible only to 3D clients until the release of Lord Blackthorn's Revenge.

UO is included in this, as others games are excluded from this comparison, because that was just the initial games used to criticize EQ graphics. Personally, I think the isomorphic style takes it out of competition with non-isomorphic games (2D or 3D).

Yes, it's DAoC.  There was a major graphics overhaul with the Catacombs expansion about 2 years ago.  The game really does look great and it's still the game that I have the most fun playing.  The PvP system in it is just done right.  Here's hoping EA buying Mythic doesn't screw everything up

    hmm.... <lol>

The point of the thread was to generate conversation on EQ graphics, the quality of and the myth that they are all old school, pixalated and sad. Well, all those people that have, over my time here, made these claims, haven't bothered to support their opinions.

I'll drop the subject and leave you to your regularly scheduled conversations :)

Thoughts: Mounts in DAoC as I remember them, they were static taxis between towns. Much like the blimps/grippons in WoW. You paid your fair and you were taken to the next town.

UO - can you actually ride those mounts? I couldn't find a reference anywhere that mentioned that you could - except the name "ethereal mount".

WoW - only took a pic of the human horse, but all the mounts look great. Even the animations. For eye candy, I'd have to say WoW looks the best. DAoC has some nice reality, prolly more than EQ.

AC2 - Beta? Did they actually make it into the game?

Yes, you could ride those mounts in UO.

I really love the look of Nektulos 3.0 in EQ--so similar to the original Nektulos, but so much better to look at. Slowly but surely, the game is getting updated through adding new zones with better graphics and replacing the old zones with updated ones. Slowly, it is coming around to look just as good as more recent games. There are some zones that aren't so great, and some that still have square trees, but it is really easy to avoid going those places if bad graphics is your main complaint, and some of those zones (EC and WC, for example) are slated for updating very, very soon.

I do think EQ needs a revamp of character models. I am not that happy with the look of humans, and the standing position of female barbarians seems to somehow defy gravity. I'd like more hairstyle options and colors, too, and better faces. But that's not a serious complaint. It's definitely NOT a dealbreaker for me. Anyway, I am a dark elf, and we're hotties. ;)

DAoC has real mounts now.  The static taxis are still in the game, but you can own a mount now.
