Hero Online

Has anyone tried Hero Online yet.  I am at my parents house on vacation atm.  I went to the website and started drooling, I hope I don't get home and get disappointed.  It looks like a good Martial Arts mmorpg.  Lots of quests.  You can go all the way level 100 which is cool.  I don't think i'll play it full time but I will probably use it for  a change of pace.

If you have tried it out let me know what you think good or bad.

Here is the link if anyone is interested.

This game seems perfect for you based on the style of your post. So does Maple Story. You pace will never change in this game. And there are no "good" Martial Arts RPGs. You must be pretty new to the community to think that such high levels are impressive. To me, they are anything but impressive.

I'm currently playing this game and these are my impressions.

First of all, for an Asian mmo it's decent. Well...apart from any game that is a grindfest that is. The graphics are decent, and it's got a little bit of a storyline to it (not to the extent of your big name titles, of course). It's a pretty simplified game and decent to kill a few hours time. I suppose that because it's free you really can't expect a mega-hit now anyway. The bad thing with this game and like so many others, people tend to inflate the game rating just for the fact that it is a free game. Being a free game has nothing to do with judging the actual game quality itself. The ratings are for only specifics on the game...such as graphics, sound, lag, customer service, and things like that. Whether a game is free or P2P is not something that you can rate. You'll read alot of comments about free games that say "Duh...da reason I rate dis game so high is becuzits free!" (well, probably not with the dumbed down speech pattern, but that's about as much sense as the comment about rating a game high for being free would deserve. Cost of a game aside...free or pay to play...has nothing to do with the specifics of the game and how they are rated. If you're going to judge a game by cost, then they should have separate ratings for the free games and for the pay to play games.

Okay, now about the game itself: the thing that I don't like the most about most Asian mmo's is the click-and-move means to move around the game world. In Hero online, and in so many other Asian mmo's you have to click an area on the ground that you wish to move to. You have to make sure you click on an "acceptable" area of ground. Many times you'll try to click here or there, only to find that your character will not move because that particular area you're trying to click on and move to is an invalid selection. Second, oftentimes when you try to click ahead of your character for a new path and there happens to be monsters/players in your way, you may inadvertently click on them instead of the ground (it's a real nuisance). Also, as you move you constantly have to shift your camera view to see where you're heading because you cannot center the view behind you, nor does it autofollow your character. So to cap it all off: you're trying to click an appropriate piece of ground ahead of you to move to, while avoiding clicking on monsters/characters, and you're constantly shifting your camera view around you, or zooming in and out, so you can see under/behind/around/over trees and other objects. I truly believe that if the game had keyboard movement controls it would be more precise and certainly less clunky. I don't understand why the Asian mmo's avoid using keyboard control . I don't want to think they lack the coordination to use both hands to play a game or whatever. I know that Ultima Online was click-and-move, but it was never a problem to actually find a piece of acceptable ground to click on and move to, and your camera view was in a fixed position (and the circle of transparency would allow you to see behind any obstacle). Of course, I'm not sure what has happened with this game in regards to movement now, since so much has been altered anyway.

Other than that, I would have to say that the in-game help for Hero Online is really not all that helpful; it's very cursory. If you want more in-depth assistance, you'll probably need to visit the forums.  The forums seem to be very well done and moderated, but even there you'll have to negotiate alot of bogus and vague postings from people who don't even know how to ask questions properly. You'll see alot of posts that say "I need help fast!" and that's about it. Just skip those post because if the person doesn't even know how to ask a specific question (or thinks that by saying they need help that quickly it's going to get them an answer any faster) then I don't even know why the moderators/GM's would even bother to try and answer them.

The descriptions and explanations for items and skills is pretty vague, in regards to what they actually do or what they will affect. So again, read their forums for more concise answers.

Again, it would be nice if movement was keyboard movement controlled, or at least give the option. Some people like click and move but many like keyboard control. I hear there is a poll or such to see how many people would like it to go keyboard controlled, although I doubt that would be implemented. It's a free game, so what's the incentive for them to change it really? Check it out though. It's a decent game for killing a few hours.

The game is not all that great. Sure the fighting styles are pretty cool in the beginning, but at higher levels you get bored of it. Also the quests.. not much story to them, pretty much just killing monsters and then talking to people. Ive also noticed you recieve barely any ingame help from the players. They either ignore you or tell you to go to the website and find it yourself. And the game pretty much stops around lvl 25 where its utter boring.

intresting that it has 8.1 rating .

But i noticed one thing about the first 1-2 months .Even bad games somehow get a good rating then tend to slip like is happening to roma victor going from a 7.4 to 6.8 and falling.

So for those who have played hero online can you comment about the game .Yeah i know its a grind fest but is it an enjoyable grind like old EQ1 .And those it have staying power?
