Review of it so far... (honest brutal and fair)

jessianjessian Member Posts: 277
I like many other MMORPG players out there love the idea of playing a game that has diversity in playable classes, a good community and good old fun. Something that appeals to us deep down we pick up our cups of tea, coffee, smak what ever floats your boat. We lock ourselves away in our dark cupboards hoping the days fly past. Our normal lives, i believe have all got flaws. some out there reading this, didnt get that job they wanted, others the grades to get into Uni, others like myself. find ourselves over qualified but find it impossible to find that elusive IT job. So we hide ourselves in our rooms playing our PC's (MINDING our own buisness)

So i played SWG, until SOE destroyed it for a console game, then i moved to WoW, which good in a way, was very very basic. Go here, kill said monster, go there pick up said loot. Go here get ganked by players 50 levels ABOVE you! the logics there BliZZ really it is. So i saw this in development, a game where we could play in ROman times, a game where we could defend our lives, our land from Romans, what more do you ask for. :) well for gankers, thats the fat turds reading this, that have small ^$#@ then please dont even look at RV.

So lets delve into RV, for a brutal and honest review.

Start off, downloading it, well i was suprised it weighed in at around 300mb, thinking something was a miss, i carried on, downloaded it, updated my dX (tip there btw) from the website link in your account settings. So once i downloaded it, i installed it, so far no problemos. during this, we had one snag, a bug crept into the account process and we all had to redo our characters. No big deal. carry on.

when i did load up, i knew the graphics werent going to be UBER, to be honest, people here need to remember way back in the 1980's graphics were utterly CRAP. But hey, the best EVER games ever invented come from those days.....

monkey island, police quest, space quest, larry, cookie, Attic attak, WASSp, and so forth. graphics people you need to take as EYE candy, something to appease the uneducated gamer, the gamer that only thinks games RULZ when its uber graphics. its like mike and timmy, that go round their mates house, "Hey timmy what game ya playing" screams mike, "Er...im playing CIV why?" "OMG OMG OMG thats so SUXZZZ man, thats bollok, that isnt DOOM3 man! what ya playing at"

Games do not need to have uber graphics to be the best in the world. Take wow, the cartoony graphics, are like for 10 year olds. and yes it has 5mil people playing it, but is it a GOOD game? i think not.

RV has never intended to be an uber looking game, take that option and store it in the back of your mind, gaming is all about evolving with it, imersing yourself, and letting go with your character. You know when u find that sweet spot, you curse, kick the keyboard when you die, swear, curse at anyone entering your world.

RV has issues, like any other new game thats been released to the public. yes its annoying trying to log on and play, the issues i believe RB to be solving. Programming takes time, this isnt something you can create in a day, and i ask ANY gamer out there that doesnt believe me, to go away, learn Java or XML and program yourself.

so what issues does RV have, well, we had, (fixed now) NPCs that ran amox, which was funny, these proceded to attack and kill any player near by! "OMg there ALIVE!' screams one player :D)

the other issues is the server coding, this again (since im a graduate in networking) is annoying stuff, if just one small thing is outta place, then everything bottlenecks, again RB is working on this issue give it time, by this time next week were hopeful its fixed.

The only thing that does worry me about RV, is the fact of the sheer scale involved. this isnt a game for people not willing to work as a community, no point logging in if you going to sulk in a corner, get into a village, be apart of it, and work with the rest of the players in building items, farming, hunting (still waiting animals :P) and fishing. the sheer scale of it, gets me thinkin, what WILL i do just now!

There isnt quests to be done like old MMORPG's, this isnt level first to 60, stand proud and go gank other players, this game is all about pacing out a life with your character.

Take mine, Abhaist (say hi to him ingame btw) i want to farm, i want to raise and handle animals, i want to have my own crops, and be apart of a village making lots of money. but i also want to do combat with Romans, or any Thieves in game. so far i have enjoyed my time in this game, yet at the same time frustrated that so many features arent there, like the animals. but over time that will come.

So dont just go by others Pure negative posts here, actually play the game. cause over time it will draw you in.

Positives

sheer scale
Lots to do
Romans
Killing stuff
Farming
Animal handling :)
being apart of a great community

Negatives

Atm the bugs, the niggly overcomeable bugs. these stop us playing, logging in and enjoying ourselves.

 So see you in game.

A review does not contain excuses for the game/company/product, also half of your "review" is just chit-chat about your gaming-background (& rest is excuses to why its not so bad).

Actually I cant find a single paragraph that does not have an excuse, how is that honest or "brutal" "review"?

You get an F (F- would be bad grammar also) for this so called "review". I do not play the game or will be, but this is in no way a review.
"Its not so bad & here is why" would have been a correct topic-headline.

ok then, a true review in short

Graphics are not up to date nor can be considered eye candy by any means.

Logging on can take awhile due to the fact that "The login handler is busy at this time, please try again in a minute".

To manipulate things it requiers alot of spacing, entering, and mouse clicking.

    Large lag in populated areas

Heavy in Community interactivaty, need more then 3 people to build a small hut.

    Open PvP

    Sandbox game

Attending quests take awhile to complete

Need to play more then 1 hour a day to get anything done

Not a game for people who want things handed to them on a silver platter

Not a game for gankers, you will get crusified

Alot of grinding in the beginning but once it is done you are good to go and do what you want for the rest of the time you play.

    No uber weapons

I am sure there are other things but I just can't think of them right now

here is one good Customer Service

the DEV's are dedicated but the customer service isn't that good.. there isn't even a phoneline. For example, compared to WOW the customer service sucks big time. Think you're better off with saying "nice and dedicated team of DEV's that listen to your problems".

While I enjoyed your oppinion, this isn't really a review.

It sort of starts off that way but then you slide into a historical report, then back into personal feelings about the game itself and your character to be. Again. Not a review.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy your excited about a game, I'm always happy when a community members finds a game they enjoy but please, if your going to attempt an "honest, brutal and fair review" or appraisal of a game, try to stay on topic, try to be neutral and try to tell us about the experiences you've had over the last few days, tell us whats going on, what the good points and bad point are on an even scale.

I do not see a review? Where? I see a lot of bashing of people and other games, I see an extremly subjective preset attitude before you even downloaded the game, and I see you ignore all the downsides and praise to heaven all the upsides.

What you are writing.. is a commersial ad. For free... Nothing brutal or honest anywhere, just a bunch of toot.

It should be thrown with great force"

weird that people seems to think calling a game a sandbox and open pvp is enough reason to play it.

I am sure i can code a dot and put it on a blank screen and each time you hit another dot you become better in piercing !And anyone can hit  each other dot and thus it becomes open pvp.

Sorry but apart from server issues, horrible graphics  there is mass stuff wrong with this game .Poor interaction, lack of wild life, clunky movements,no tutorial, one of the most boring and time consuming crafting ever seen in a mmorpg, boring combat.List goes on and on.

Saying a game is sandbox and open pvp is not enough. It has to be at least able to provide this in an acceptable and playable form.

Of course i think those happy with the game should play it in peace.Problem is some members of the community seems to make it their job to paint a false picture of this game to gain customers. This is why i keep telling the truth about the game to stop people getting decieved.Apart from that those who like it or willing to put up with it are more then welcome to do so as long as they remain well informed.

I couldn't agree with you more.  It takes alot more to make a game then what RV is.  They have done the bare minimal so you can run around and interact with each other.  Throwing on a toga and running around with a spear doesn't put me back in roman times.   Real NPC's and wild life would make this feel alot more real, then having to spend 3 hours to build a pile of sticks.

The scale of RV at the moment isn't that big. The world is nothing compared to WOW for example

Lots to do...? Like what? Gather and craft? There are no quests to be done. I don't see why there is so much to do?

Romans...? This is no serious argument to buy a game

Killing stuff... you can kill stuff in almost any game. Whats so special about that? Besides i've seen much better effects in other games.

Farming? True.. the farming thing is funny. Altough i looks stupid. Fully grown grain looks the same as planted grain.. only a bit bigger.

Aninaml Handling.. I never saw a animal yet.. no chicken or dog to be found in the barbarians forts. I believe there are some beasts called Bear_4895a wandering in the forests...

Yeah, I really cant let this go un answered...

Scale: This from the guy who dosent know where the claypits are...
Scale is as much about travel time as size. I can get from one end of the wow world to the other way faster than I can get from Corst to Erring, so which one is bigger?...now, we can argue who has more content in that area, but I will concede that the game that pulls in 60million a month has more stuff in it. Also, it sounds like the world is going to increase about 10X with the next map update.

Stuff to do: Just because you dont like it, dosent mean that others wont or that it isnt things to do. there is exploring, running errands, fighting, buying and selling, gathering, city goverment, and many different types of crafting.

Romans: While you may enjoy it, some of us are tired of elves and vulcans and wizards and jedi, and with the exception of WW2OL, there arent many historical MMO's out there...so yeah, it is a selling point for some.

Killing stuff: spoken like a true carebear...there are not many games out there with full on PvP and conflict for resources and a combat system that takes both player skill and character skill into account.

Farming: name another game where this kind of thing occurs? where you leave town and come back a few weeks later (game time) and have the city surronded in planted fields?

Animals: you almost have a point here...animals were set to not respawn until the lag issue is rooted out (can you imagine the whinefest that the haters would have created if lag was worse at launch?) Tho, if you really saw a bear, I know a buch of people that would like to see em....

skills in pvp and roma victor do not know each other thank you.

stuff to do-exploring a bland totally empty terrain?gathering -whoopy more boring stuff to do.running errands- hello attending like activities.crafting-yes loads of different types.Wish the crafting was not the most boring crafting system in any mmorpg.

large map-i played horizons. It was huge and empty .Yet it was more presentable then roma victor environment. So whats the point of having more land when the current one is total boring and void.

farming- last i heard tale in the desert has agriculture, cultivation, horticulture etc.

I am guessing you didnt PVP then...or you are one of those who crys when he cant jump-strafe in WW2OL.

You know, you use that boring word alot...I am now wondering what you expected from this game. There are trees and buildings and rivers and hills...were you expecting a magic undercity filled with the undead? Sorry dude, wrong game. Same with crafting...no uber leet sword of slaying here...just stuff that keeps the economy running and the troops armed.

It's not free if the game mechanics are manipulated to coerce players to buy in-game coin from RedBedlam, which is something they have stated they will do if not enough players voluntarily buy their magic Roman money. BTW how is that historically correct, I don't recall magic money existing in Roman times?

Jorev, if told me the Devs said the sun was in the sky, I would go outside and check...

Also, I just checked my current burn rate...and assumeing no actual profit comes my way from the stuff I am making, I might have to buy some more money in 8 months...so much for your pre-release histrionics, way to be proved wrong
