If WoW is too difficult for you, you should stay away from MMOs altogether.
Apart form Wow or Eq2, you might take a look at DAOC, its pretty user friendly. I hate to say it, but the new SWG is probably good for a new MMOer as well. *shudder*

I think almost everyone here have started with Runescape when they were kids. The game sucks but it really might be a good game to start with because its so simple, even 7 years old kids can play it.
You should probably start with free games and after you've played them for a while you can start WoW which is great game for first timers, but addictive, if you are still in school it will take major part of your free time.
WoW is a summary of the MMOs in general, you play WoW, you got a fairly good idea at the market in general.
City of Heroes or City of Villains would be a good option, very intuitive and FUN, although atm I am angry about some "end-game" stuff, yet it is less bad than with other MMOs, it is just that they do the same mistake, less badly.
Auto-Assault or DDO are definitely nice for newcomers, if you like these particuliar styles, which is not my case. They are not RPG IMO, but action game. Still, might be a blast if you like these styles.

Guild Wars is always the best place to start. Easy levelling, excellent & engaging storyline and no fee. For the new mmorpg player GW might take 2 weeks and its a great $10 introduction to the genre.

I think the most complex MMO out there will be the best place to start (not really sure which that will be really. Eve, Eq1, and AC1 maybe)
That way, if you do end up moving on, you will not be wasting any more time learning more MMO basics, and will be prepared for anything
