I know there is no “end game” but you know what I mean. I am just starting and not too deep into skills just yet. I am asking if you had to do it all over again, which race would you pick, in looking at end game ships. I get the impression is it the Amar.
Comments
Though they have sub standard haulers (go gallentee for that, but the badger does have a lot of med slots for ew and such), the Caldari line is largely reputed to have the most complete line. I have to admit, the raven is an impressive ship, and I hear it is the best mission ship.
Though every other ship has it's bonuses, the Gallentee are excellent gun ships, the megathron is the best sniper.
The Amarr have good armor tanks and damage, and they don't need ammo (outside of crystals)
The Minmatar are jacks of all trades, personally I like that, it gives you versatility. Plus unlike every other race, their turrent ammo gives you a selection of damage types. Plus the Tempest is another excellent sniper.
Just my thoughts.
I wouldn't be concerned about the race because you can train anything you want no matter which race you choose. What IS more important are the attributes. Pick the new character with the highest attributed based on the skills you want to specialize in. Then it will take less time to train those skills.
If you are looking for pvp type ships, I believe Intelligence and Perception are the most important attributes.
I'd stay away from Amarr. I"m 7 months in, 9 million sp, still a newb but all I've flown is Amarr. About 2 months ago I stopped training Amarr specific ships and lasers, I've been training all gunnery support and drones. If Amarr doesn't get beefed up I'm jumping ship to Gallantee. In general the Amarr ships are underpowered compared to their Caldari , Galantee and Minnie counterparts. I've been doing missions in an Apoc, missions Amarr are aok, damage output isn't fantastic but I know exactly what damage types to harden to so it's ok. Whenever I hit a pvp situation I feel like I'm a minor league player usings my dads old baseball glove vs the big leaguers. Laser damage is EM/Thermal, Thermal is perhaps the most hardened damage type and EM has the big natural armor of 60% resist.
The BS ship bonus's are substandard, Apoc gets better cap and cap reduction on large lasers, the only reason they need these bonus's is because lasers are broken as is. Imagine if a race got a Battleship bonus of +5% cargo capacity so they could hold more missiles, wouldn't be very stunning.
As it sits Amarr are aok to run missions, the lack of ammo is very nice when killing drones or killing structures , so the cargo has room to fit stuff and you can in fact kill every structure on the map if you want.
In general the biggest problem I have is that Amarr seem to be a severe gank or tank class, you really gotta make a choice, it's 1 or the other, no mix and match.
They have done me well for missions, but I'll be moving the Gallantee route for pvp.
There is a thread on the eveforums under ships and fittings that was 51 pages long addressing Amarr and their shortcomings

Truth is all race does is decide what you look like.
Any race can succeed in eve, so just chose a race you like the look of then enjoy the game.
Like everyone is saying, there is no BEST race.
Your own skills depend on how well you do.
The only real difference, is what the ships bring. Each ship has it own bonuses, Need a Industrial, go gallente, need a freighter go Caldari, need a ship that does missiles, go caldari, one that can outfit alot of guns, without the need for to much power, go minmatar, etc.
Each one of us has our own setups and opinions on whats good. I have been taken out by whole lot of different ships with different setups.
All I really know, and I think everyone can back me on this, you need a wingman or squad of close knit people. The game is quite boring being alone. Find a small corp to join, and work from there. Build friendships and enemys.
THis game brings alot of realsim to it, so dont back off, go full steam ahead and make sure your wingman isnt pooping himself.
Nuff said.
All depends on what you want your "end game" to be.
Ship setups (Each race's ships get bonuses. The races themselves do not get the bonuses. The bonuses only apply when the ship is active.):
Gallente = Drones and Turrets (Blasters mainly, but railguns wouldn't hurt)
Caldari = Missiles and Turrets (railguns mainly, but blasters wouldn't hurt)
Amarr = Lasers
Minimitar = Projectiles
Projectile weapons, as far as I've seen, are the best sniping guns out there. They get the best distance, that is. Their tracking isn't anything special.
Railguns are the "half-way house" of the gun family. They can get good range or close range, and they do moderate damage. With an increase in the ROF and the DPS, they're very good for missions and PvP.
Blasters are the close range damage dealers. And, when I say close range, I mean VERY close range. Of course, their ROF and their DPS more than make up for the extra tim spent getting in close enough. The problems come with having to tank the damage until you get to your target.
I boast for Blasters because I'm Gallente and have experience with both railguns and blasters. I've also experimented with Projectiles, but never really saw the appeal in being too far away to hit... though... the damage that the Large Howies do make me concider otherwise.
Now, missiles are something completely different than the guns. Missiles... never miss and do moderate to great DPS, but in trade for that, at 60km away, somebody with guns can be pegging you for several volleys while your first volley of missiles is still flying towards him. Missiles can be fired from any distance, but they won't fire unless they're in range (which can literally be anywhere from 0km to 200km+). You have F.O.F (Friend or Foe) missiles that can be fired without need for targeting, and you can change missiles out to change the type of damage you're doing. They are the best mission running weapon, but (imho) they're really only used as extra damage, nothing to rely on, when it comes to PvP. That doesn't count missiles out in PvP though. They are great damage dealers.
Everything in Eve is balanced though. Please keep that in mind on your way to the end game you speak of. This game is about the pilot, not the pilot's gear. Everything can be done and can be countered. You will have no specific advantages due to persuing one race over another. I would say, make your character, experiment a lot, and in about... an unspecified chunk of time... you should know or feel comfortable with one thing and then specialize in it.
Hope that helped.

There are two types of people in this world - people that suck... and me.
As far as high-end PvP goes, right now I'd probably have to say that Gallente is your best pick. Following that, it's really a toss-up, but Gallente are definitely pretty uber at the moment.

Sorry for the short statement without supporting info. I should really learn not to post unless I expect to have time to do more than a one-liner.
There are several reasons that Gallente are probably the best race as a whole in the game at the moment.
First, their weaponry. Gallente focus on hybrid weapons. Blasters have the highest damage per second of any weapons systems in the game. Railguns have excellent DPS in the long-range category, have damage types than lend themselves to the destruction of both shields and armor, and have the best overall range of all the long-range weapons systems.
In addition, Gallente have a second major weapon type: drones. Most Gallente ships have a large drone bay, further adding to their damage per second and/or their versatility (there are a number of specialty drone types that mimick the effects of modules that can be fitted to your ship; ECM drones, energy neutralizer drones, webifying drones, and target painting drones are good examples of this). Moreover, there are several dedicated drone ships in the Gallente lineup (more on these later).
The second factor that makes Gallente an excellent choice is the ships themselves. They have a number of ships that fall under that category of best-in-class, or very nearly so.
The Taranis is, with the possible exception of the crow, the best interceptor in the game. It combines a good slot layout with good speed and insane firepower for a frigate; it hits more like a cruiser than a frig.
The Ishkur is one of the best assault frigates. Its slot layout allows it to tank quite well at the same time as it dishes out the hurt.
The thorax is the most used PvP cruiser in the game. It combines excellent firepower with good mobility and a quite decently-sized drone bay.
The vexor is another excellent cruiser for PvP. It's a drone boat, allowing for great versatility in setups. It can combine its drones with turrets in the highslots for a high damage output or it can suppress its onboard armament entirely in favor of nosferatus to drain an opponent's cap.
The deimos is basically a stepped-up thorax. Though it has a few issues (mostly in regards to fitting and agility), it's still an extremely effective ship with a ridiculous damage output.
The ishtar is a vexor on steroids. It tanks harder, hits harder (it can field a full rack of heavy drones and have spares left over), and has more slots to boot.
The brutix is the Gallente battlecruiser. With tech II medium blasters and void ammo, it hits like a battleship; its tank, however, is more in-line with a cruiser's.
The astarte is the Gallente field command ship. With two damage bonuses, this souped-up brutix is one of the hardest hitting ships in the game short of a dreadnought.
The eos is the fleet command ship. While it doesn't hit as hard as its brother, the astarte, it has an insane tank that's exceedingly difficult to break.
The megathron is one of the Gallente battleships. While it can be fitted for long range combat and excel in that role, it works even better with a short range setup and blasters. A blasterthron--as the setup is known--hits harder than just about anything else and can go through a target's tank in just a few volleys. It has an extremely short range, but once it gets in that range there is little that can stand up to it. The megathron also has a good-sized drone bay, though it has no drone bonuses.
The dominix is probably the most versatile Gallente ship. It's another drone ship with an insanely large drone bay and an excellent bonus to drone useage (hitpoints and damage output), as well as a bonus to hybrids. Like the vexor and ishtar, it can either fit a full rack of guns and kick out insane DPS when combined with its drones, or it can fit nosferatus. Its slot layout allows it to fit for either a shield tank or an armor tank, and also to fit an armor tank with electronic warfare mods in the mids.
Anyway, I hope that was enlightening. I'm sure I've missed a few ships in there, but these are the ships I know the most about. Having fought against Gallente ships frequently, I can tell you that Gallente are the race I most fear when PvPing.

Well the Gallente is nice, but it still all comes down to skills. When a game comes out that allows you to learn everything, then the race doesnt matter. Seems this thread is turning more towards makes of ships, instead of what race to be. I am Minmatar that can fly any frigate, any. SO does that make me less superior to the Gallente?? Nope. PIck a race base on what you want your character to look like, then focus in learning skills and go from there. For each battle, a different ship is needed, not race.
Sorry for... blablabla
You're right of course, once you get into range blasters are evil. But the fact is, you need to get ridiculous close to your enemy, and gallente's ships arent the fastest one. When you manage to keep your enemy away (Minmatar = high falloff (especially with barrage) -> you dont need to get that close to your enemy but still hit, where as blaster dont hit you anymore) you can kill nearly any blastership with a good minmatar ship (dont know much about caldari/amarr as im a pure minmatar). I can kill nearly every blastership up to the brutix (as I dont fly BS yet) with my cyclones, ruptures and claws. But ofc drone ships are tough, but since minmatar have some decent drone bays too, it could be a very close match (eg typhoon)...
The primary Gallente race is not good compared to their bloodline counterpart. Jin Mei starts with Hybrid and Gallente ship skills but their attributes are superior. Even if you went with Amarr bloodline, Khanid, you could still train Hybrid weapons and Gallente ships so the point is that skills don't matter in the grand scheme, attributes do.
Just buy the skill books and you can do whatever you want.
At the top level, things tend to balance out more. EW is so absurdly overpowered that ship choice matters less in gangs, compared to the ability to coordinate EW and proper gang fittings.
OK why are we back on the stupid gallente??
Hasnt anyone noticed that there is NO GOOD RACE. WE talk about bloodlines and such, whens the last time anyone made a character?? Hasnt anyone noticed that you can decide what your guys gets off bat and what direction you want his attributes go?? There is NO END RACE TO BE. Its all skills and attributes. THis game allows any one to fly any ship of any race. Sure the Gallente ships are nice, but when I check my logs on the ships that took me out, Gallente isnt the primary ship, its all in the players choice. Seems like most people in this thread are expressing opinion over truth. I am Minmatar flyting Caldari ship, why? I like how the Minmatar look, but I like missiles and rockets. So in the end, I will probably be Caldari, with thier superior Missile and Electronic Warfare bonuses, plus with them being a long range weapon, I can usually stay out of harms way, but still deal a powerful blow with my missiles. Plus, the EW comes in handy. I can cut someones targeting Range in half, or just totally jam them. Or I can just totally mess up their weapons, there is so much you can do with EW and they can be hard to counter.
I believe in the Caldari too. I am currently flying a Ferox(BC) with a missile boat setup, 5x heavy launchers when needed with EM and Thermal/Kinetic damage types. In PvP vs a Cruiser/BC the damage per volley is about 1000 at a 50km range, not that high but still decent enough. The missile tactic of shoot and run would make piece-meal of blaster setups. Although sniping rails would pose a little problem as rails have a more efficient range than missiles, but missiles dont have to worry about NOS as they consume no power. Im still pretty new to the game, only about 2 months but from the general feeling i have in the game, and from what people say, Caldari do have a few overpowered ships and some even call the Navy Raven the most powerful BS out there, of course it costs an arm and a leg and few other body parts :P
I am planning to train for a Raven, but yes i have to agree to the fact that a few Gallente ships are very powerful, notably the T2 frig Ishtar i think. a lot of pirates are seen sporting it.
My Brute - Dare to challenge?
This was initially about such things, which 'race' was best for endgame, but another way to pull this question is to interperate which 'races' ships are best for end game. Again we have a contraversy among players about which is most wanted, which works the best.
As always within eve you have the three way question, inclose damage dealer, long range not as good damage dealer but no need for super tank, or mid range, tank, not really as much damage as either, but EW out the wazoo. The point here is that with every positive there is a negative, but in some ways a lot of ships have it worse off against Gallente high end ships.
Blasterthron - highest dps out of any ship... (might be beaten by a couple of the 'officer' models but kicks the **** out of anything else)
Dominix - Best passive ship that can deal auxillery damage = to most basic BS'spve setups (this is without guns)
and thats just their two BS, every race yes has the designed role for their bs but those two alone place them higher then all but the Navy Raven, imperial Apoc, Rattlesnake, so on... This is why, if you see a group of bs anywhere. They will have 2-3 Megathrons and 1-2 Scorpions(EW - 8 midslots) this can kill the most dangerous convoys in a matter of seconds.
Gallente have great high end BS. It is just great that anyone can pilot them oce the skills have changed. In truth there is no 'end game' so whats the problem...
