New comp keeps crashing

Hello,

I bought a new computer a few months ago. It's been crashing 2, 3, 4 times a week. It shuts down out of the blue, then restarts. This gets really annoying when I'm playing a game and it crashes, or when i'm just surfing. A tech guy from my internet service said it was a blaster worm virus, or something like that. I downloaded some stuff from microsoft.com to combat this, but had the same problems a few days later.

Any ideas on what could be causing this? Could it be the internet service somehow, a virus, the computer itself... any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

Probably memory [RAM] problems. PC don't just "crash" by being defective, there is just a dirty part component or a setting that is too high or low.

The guy I bought the computer from did change the RAM. No good. I have a two-year warranty on it, but not sure if I can return it. I'm a wuss when it comes to demanding things like that.

Also, what do you mean that "there is a setting that is too high or low"??

Same thing happened to me. 1. The ram is not installed correctly. 2. the temperature in your room is too hot and causes instant crashes.

Sometimes if you configure your BIOS wrong, it can cause random crashes.

    Try these things:

    1. Enter your BIOS.  This can usually be done by tapping Del or F2 while your system is first booting (or POSTing).  Once in the bios setup look for an option labeled "Load Fail-Safe Defaults" or something like that.  Select this option.
    2. Get a free virus scanner, like this one : http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php
    3. Get a AdWare removal system, like this one: http://www.safer-networking.org
    4. Find out the make/model of your motherboard, go to their website and get the latest updates for the BIOS on your motherboard.  If this is out of your league, as the guy who sold you the PC to do this for you...because doing this wrong can destroy your motherboard (or at least the bios chip on it).
    5. If nothing has worked yet, try re-installing Windows.
    6. Are the crashes only happening while you are playing games?  If so, the problem could be with DirectX and your graphics adapter.  Make sure you get the latest version of DirectX and the latest version of your video drivers.

Hope some of this helps ya out!  image

Hard to say what the problem is, would need more details about your computer but if your computer runs fine for a  few hours then crashes my first guess would be it's overheating. Having said that however when i was having  a similar problem it turned out to be my hard drive (piece of crap ibm drive, 3 people i know had there ibm drives fail in the first year). It could be your ram but from my experience with ram problems i would expect the computer to crash a lot more often then 2-3 times a week. I dont know what type of MOBO you have but you should try to get  a diagnostic program for it that would monitor your CPU temerature it could help a lot with trying to figure out if it's a overheating problem.

You should post more info about your computer IE..MOBO brand..CPU type..CHIPSET..RAM( name and brand)..type of VIDEOCARD..HARDDRIVE brand....number of case fans ect...the extra info can only help.

Your cooling system may be damaged causing the CPU to get way too hot.   Open the case, turn on the PC and see if the fan is running.  If it isn't replace it.  If it is you still might want to go into CMOS and check the temp of your cpu

Indeed, the cooler could be damaged or such.

This is mostly the issue for crashing systems.

    Or the videocard drivers.

yea, their could be a number of things, make sure that everything has been instaled right on ur case, make sure the fans are operating, and make sure nothing is blocking the vents on ur case.
