EVE Online: PCU Milestone

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

After some time, EVE Online has announced that a new Peak Concurrent Users milestone has been surpassed as the numbers crept just over 28,000 on Monday:

Yesterday at 18:21 a new PCU milestone was reached when 28020 EVE Players were logged in at the same time. The dream of more than 30K users seems to becoming a reality.

I haven't played EVE in ages, but man that's an impressive number of concurrent users.  I know EVE is a lot simpler to manage than some other games because of the vastness of space and all that, but still you have to respect their server set up that can handle all this day after day :)

Except when a certain Database admin puts the wrong configuration on the database and then goes on vacation but hey it happens to all of us

Doh!  That's gotta hurt.   Was anything major lost?  Sounds like the makings of a nice rollback there.

Not really just for the days he was on vacation the transaction log wasn't growing properly and causeing the server to lag and crash. Knew that the log was the source of the problem but not what was specifically causeing it. When the database Admin came back he found it, told us what it was, and fixed the config, and said he wasn't taking any more vacations just long weekends.

damn edits grarmmer is not my strong point today

Wish I could say I've never done that same sorta thing with our database where I work.

I know EVE Online players get a bit testy if a rollback is ever mentioned with all the skills being real world time based.  Crashing people can grumble about, but deal with though hehe.

well a rollback in eve shouldn't effect the characters as they should be stored on other servers in the cluster. Its always amazes me how people complain when they don't understand how some of the stuff works. One little option that you never notice normally and you forget to turn it on once and everything goes BOOM

Doesn't help when the databases go through millions of transactions a day either.

Actually , EvE-Online has the most complex database in the mmorpg genre.

Thousands of transactions, massive calculations, huge amount of activity.

There are hundreds of systems in EvE-Online and each maintains a continues operation of NPC pirates that are active even if the closest player is 10 jumps away.

Are they counting the free-trial accounts ?

It's better be hated for who you are, than loved for who you aren't.

The current limit on trial accounts is 3000 at once (possibly lower if lots of paying accounts log in). You can see in game launcher how many trial accounts are on (been around 2300-2600 the last 2 days).

This is why I quit EVE, one of the greater reasons anyways. I got tired hearing about the milestone breaks while day after day I was still dealing with the same problems in the game. I get tired of CCP blowing their own horn every single day about their concurrent users.

If you're referring to lag 90% of the lag in EVE is client lag. I log into jita when theres 600 people there and i get virtually no lag. I'm on a top end machine though. Not to say theres not things that lag for me. A 300 man fleet battle at a POS would still lag me.

Lag is only part of my reference to problems with the game.

And just tossing out the lag is client side is an age old dodge for peformance problems with a game. I can traceroute to them perfectly when I am having the worst of problems with the game . I am running a machine that is way overqualified for EVE's requirements. The game is aged now and CCP still can't seem to iron out all the problems with it's performance and I am sorry but there are a fair bit of posts about people experiencing odd latency or synchronization problems on the official forums.

There is also a good number of people concerned about the graphical upgrades that are coming considering the performance problems EVE suffers already.

    1. on EVE's site was just a small news about that, not even a sticky in the forums.
    2. Try another Game with 300 people in one grid and you'll have that lag too

Its most of the times the node youre sitting on, or some DB Prob, but the most times i play i have very little lag

Edit : Chinese Server had in Beta over 30000 concurrent users.....

Here we go, EVE fan's have to bite back now because I spoke some displeasure about the game.

Did I say it was in places with 300 people in one "grid"?

I never said anything about CCP making an official statement on the issue. I said alot of players are voicing that concern, and no I am not going to go dig up examples for you. Find them yourself.

That is discussed in the official Forums, too, so you dont have to feel special about it.
Atm its just happening when people clash in Large groups together on the same grid or when
the node isnt reinforced and overrunned.
And i had enough Experience of Lag myself and enough reimbursement Petitons cause of it, too.
But EVEs not the only game having that, and others dont upgrade the whole cluster then for a big load of money

I think you may want to re-read what I said. I never citied my problem, just corrected you on your assumptions.

Other games aren't boasting their new persistant user count every 5 minutes.

And once again, no I am not referring to problems with area's of over 300 people.
