Farlan Entertainment, the company responsible for Dark and Light, have announced that they will be offering "Three months of no invoices for existing and new subscribers". The company says that the decision was made to offset the fact that the game was released too early. The press release goes on to blame the premature release on pressure from the game's investors as well as the gaming community.

Three Months of No Invoices for Existing and New Subscribers
No Disruption of Any Kind in Gameplay, User Access Keys or Accounts During Repair Period
Farlan Adds Technical Resources to Assist with Improvements
New Access Keys Still Available for USD $39.99 (39,99 taxes included)
PORT LOUIS, MAURITUS (August 15, 2006) Farlan Entertainment, publisher of Dark and Light, The Largest MMORPG Youve Ever Seen!, today announced it is embarking on a new initiative to correct and improve various operational aspects of Dark and Light. While worldwide play in the Internet game will not be interrupted during this period, Farlan is nonetheless offering a thank you to the hundreds of thousands of Dark and Light subscribers who have signed on thus far by offering three months of play with no monthly subscription fee.
Dark and Light, which debuted in June of this year, has broken new ground in many aspects of MMORPG entertainment, bringing to the industry the largest virtual game surface ever, total freedom of movement without loading time, and three axes of character progression, among other breakthroughs. However, Farlan Entertainment now acknowledges that the game was released prematurely due to pressure from its investors and from the gaming community.
To rectify the situation, the company is taking several major steps. First, to facilitate the change/upgrade process, Farlan has signed a new production agreement with SnailGame Entertainment. SnailGame, a game developer which currently handles distribution of Dark and Light in China, will provide additional people to focus on graphic and scenic production. Farlan wishes to reiterate that NP Cube will continue to oversee Dark and Lights evolution and technical/creative control.
Second, Dark and Lights development team will focus on improving and correcting the games technical challenges, especially its handling, user interface, processing speed, game immersion, and battle performance. The process of upgrading and improving Dark and Light is already underway; for example, a new major patch was recently installed that corrects a number of game balancing and graphic interface issues. Additional major improvements will be forthcoming very soon.
Third, to reward the Dark and Light subscribers who have stayed the course during the past few months, Farlan is making Dark and Light available for three months with no subscription fee; that is, no invoicing for the next three month period. All operational aspects of the game, including user accounts and player credits, will be maintained during this period. It is anticipated that this free subscription phase will provide ample time for the various technical corrections to be made.
The free Dark and Light subscription is being made available to current subscribers; however, new access keys are still available to any player wanting to take part in Dark and Light. Purchase price for an access key is $39.99 USD (39,99, taxes included).

"Farlan is nonetheless offering a thank you to the hundreds of thousands of Dark and Light subscribers who have signed on thus far "
Right, hundreds of thousands ...
hundreds maybe thousands
corrected for realism...
and people signing up for the forum do not = subscribers
Maybe one day somewhere an MMOG company will stop listening to the beta 'fanbois' (who really just want it out so they can use all the xploits they found) and start listening to their beta community as a whole.
Multiply anything by zero, you get zero.
No annoying animated GIF here!
As far as I know, you still have to sign up for a Click and Pay account in order to play. After two weeks of getting erroneous error messages and no emails from tech support, I gave up. Other people have had the same problem, and others have gotten through just fine and must activate their account with a phone call. Another thing that's very hard for me in my current timezone.
I wish the game the best, and I hope all of this stirs the gaming community to give the game a good look. I just wish that DnL would switch to a more conventional billing system. Then again, we don't need another Horizons, do we?
*sighs*
If Farlan would pay me monthly fees (tax included), i wouldn't even start playing dark and light tbh.
Who wants to play a "We almost made this game playable and we got rid of the playerbase while we give our Application Destruction team the room to do so" when there are killer MMORPGs comming up with companies behind it that actually like us, teh players, to be online.
Give it up mon amies.. maybe, assuming you learned of your mistakes, if you rename both company and game and try to publish something in a few months from now you have a lil more luck.
Don't go all the way to the ground with this...
Makers of Dark and Light in your apology you have managed to insult your investors and player base...I SALUTE YOU
It's better be hated for who you are, than loved for who you aren't.
Only existing subscribers will get the benefit of free play and new sunbscribers must pay the $40 to access the game. It's unlikely that anyone who was already a subscriber and given up on this game will not be playing again and most people who are still playing after the abysmmal lauch will be most likely be hanging around for the forseeable future anyway. I personnally think this announcement is a veiled attempt to enitce more people to sign up to this game and garner more money to hold off the investors. Saying that this game is 'groundbreaking' is sort of misleading, yes the world is BIG but has anyone actually travelled around it? It is empty and for a claim that it is the "largest virtual game surface ever" leaves out the fact there is very little game to be had.
In short I believe this to be a deliberately misleading statement such as all the other misleading statements this developer has made over the last few years. I would strongly urge anyone who cannot afford to simply throw away $40 not to sign on to this game.

Hate to say it, but that might be an improvement.

Im with you on this one. Its deliberately misleading also because the game probably wont exist to the end of that free three months.

Very good Captain Obvious. Of course it is an attempt to get more money/subscribers.
