This is not too original but I agree... not necessarily the order:
1. Stairway To Heaven - Jimmy Page 2. Eruption - Edward Van Halen 3. Freebird - Collins/Rossington 4. Comfortably Numb - David Gilmour 5. All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix 6. November Rain - Slash 7. One - Kirk Hammet 8. Hotel California - Don Felder/Joe Walsh 9. Crazy Train - Randy Rhoads 10. Crossroads - Eric Clapton 11. Voodo Chile (Slight Return) - Jimi Hendrix 12. Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry 13. Texas Flood - Stevie Ray Vaughan 14. Layla - Clapton/Allman 15. Floods - Dimebag Darrel 16. Heartbreaker - Jimmy Page 17. Cliffs Of Dover - Eric Johnson 18. Little Wing - Jimi Hendrix 19. Highway Star - Ritchie Blackmore 20. Bohemian Rhapsody - Brian May
I have a soft spot for SRV and Randy Rhodes
( I got it from Ask.com)
I shoot for the curve... anything above that is gravy.
I would think the best guitar solo would be Dream Theater's Goodnight Kiss. Its just such an vehemently played solo and it just seems so dramatic in the end while he's playing an intense guitar solo while there are sound clips of a woman screaming and crying.
Also Jimi Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower's great. Gotta love that wah

Amen to that. Two of the best ever. Anything SRV played was awesome.
My two favorite solos of all time:Revelation(Mother Earth)-Randy Rhoads andNovember Rain's. I've never liked the song, but nothing tops Slash's solo in it.

Zappa is god. One of the best musicians in the 20th century. I wish I had seen him live. The closest thing I got was Steve Vai playing "My Guitar is Gonna Kill Your Mama," to close his show I went to.
But as for best guitar solo, I'd have to go with Buckethead on "Ignorance is Bliss." The song is by Les Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains. Buckethead is a sweet avante guard guitar player who has chops beyond belief.
I used to think Freebird was the best guitar solo of all time, then I learned how to play guitar and I realized its just a few licks played over and over and over with some different bends here and there. Its still a sweet song, but there's alot out there thats alot better.
OMG I was actually writing this post while I was going to bed last night - my internet cut out though lol - thieves!!!
I have to say though, 'Best Guitar Solo' is WAY too broad a category... Need best jazz/metal/classic rock/classical/techno at the least... Some personal favourites off the top of my head HAVE to be Eruption, King Twang by Scott Henderson, one of Toto's songs has a awesome solo but I forget the name of it, Dreams of Swedenborg - Therion, The Nearness of You - Martin Taylor, Run to the Hills - Iron Maiden, Beast and the Harlot - Avenged Sevenfold, Time Together - David Mead (it's just a solo track more than a guitar solo, but it's still awesome), Martin's (a guitarist in a band I play for) lead guitar version of Eye of the Tiger The Willing Well (all 4 parts) - Coheed and Cambria, and finally, Canon in D - Jerry C (this version though :P http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1491516901670441597&q=canon+in+d)
Now, to chuck out some flamebait... Dragonforces solos are somewhat lacking imho... The dual guitar stuff works quite well, but alone, they just seem to play fast extracts of scales, and that REALLY irritates me... Also they sound WAY too much like Mario... I actually prefer their pianist's solos than the supposed 'Best Guitarist in the World' (as dubbed by Metal Hammer Magazine). Martin>Herman ANY day of the week...

I agree with the OP. Nothing beats Freebird.
