Sony Online Entertainment Revisits The Station and admits failure

Web site redesigns are commonplace (hell, we're working on one right now). Though it can be a painful experience trying to cram years of content into a new design (again, we're going through that right now too), a fresh coat of paint and an attention to streamlining content is never a bad thing. Over the years Sony Online Entertainment has molted from their formerly rigid PC MMO-only shell and embraced gaming in just about every form -- even the burgeoning casual market.

Deals with other Sony Pictures properties (of which SOE is a child company) for things like Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune and mobile phone games and publishing deals for both PlayStation 2 properties like Ratchet & Clank and more familiar classic games like Q*Bert all have helped thicken the stable of properties. And then of course there's the actual PS2 games -- and PSP offerings too for that matter -- games like the Champions series and new entries like Field Commander or the upcoming Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom are all supplementing Sony's games division

Pure and Simple SOE Failed in the world of MMO's and is now scrambling to diversify. Arrogance - in a word.

the same could be said by the blind SOE follower as well in that they enjoy the mistreatment and mismanagment of their games . Games that have drop in players by over 1/2 million in the past 2 years.

News for you friend - SOE ,your game host is no longer number one in MMO in the US , in fact they may not even be number two. Just because they just bought a trading card company in Denver does not mean that SOE is playing with a full deck.

Love that Jestor , One Wild card SOE knows that did not fold.

I am thrilled to see SOE put things like Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune BACK ON THE SITE.  That's right - BACK!  It's looking a lot like the old station.sony.com again.  Who says retro isn't nice???

Nothing wrong with the new design.  In fact, it makes it a whole lot easier to get to where you want to go!  Not to mention, you get to see a menu of all their offerings instead of going directly to a specific game page.

SOE knows business and they know that by putting a menu of all their offerings on their masthead, they will generate a lot more business.

And, no, I have no love for the way SOE manages their MMOs.

Even though SOE's shortcomings as of late are undeniable, I think you're reading wayyy too much into this.

But like the previous poster said, whatever you need to use as fuel for your personal fire.  I would think if something was so terrible you'd just not waste time on it.

I just don't see how this is worthy of omfzg!!!!!11! the sky is falling for SOE post.

I just got done with an exciting 3 hour PvP session in EQ2. Sure it's got some problems, but it's still a blast and is right up there with anything out right now...and much better than WoW for PvP. Sorry, I didn't play SWG because Lucas is a hack so I don't know much about SOE being bad...well, PoP...but I'm past that.

I actually feel sorry for you Jestor...

SOE failed in the world of MMO's?
    *laughs*

They fail miserably in the world of Customer Service... but as far as MMO's go they've done pretty darn well for themselves.  And where you got the gem that they've lost over 1/2 million customers is beyond me.  None of their games ever even had 1/2 million customers except EQ1 and it's still got almost 200k.  EQ2 has grown, and SWG is still hanging in there DESPITE their mis-management.

SWG is their lone game that I would consider a 'failure'.  EQ1 is slowly dying.  the damn game is over 7 years old for crying out loud.  It's time for it to start dying finally.  EQ2 is growing after a REALLY bad release.  They have 4 MMORPG's coming out that they're going to 'own' and 2 that they're going to 'publish' on top of that.

I just don't see your logic that they've "failed" or the fact that their putting their other titles BACK on the Station website is some indication of 'failure'.  Personally I like that the station is going back to displaying more than just their MMORPG titles because I do like a lot of their other games.  I don't even currently play any SOE games and I'm just as pissed about SWG as you are so don't even go there.  The difference between us is that I'm not blinded by my anger with SOE.  You are.

Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

SOE hasn't failed me.  I still play Everquest II, and look forward to their next mmorpg.  I am going to play Vanguard, although it is really Sigil's game.  I was upset over SWG, but I don't agree with the opinion t hat SOE has failed in the mmorpg market, and I suppose many others would agree with me, but I don't expect them to speak up about it here, or they'll get themselves flamed by all the SOE haters running rampant on this forum.

You need to learn a whole lot more about corporate branding before you go and make apocalyptic statements like this.

As long as people continue to pay for games/expansions rushed out the door 6-12 months early and completely reconstructed after release $oe will survive.

I know enough, but I am not one to brag.

The station does have Jeopardy! again!!!  Alex ,I will take MMO's for $1000.00 please - This Famous Scifi Franchise MMO was drasticlly changed not once but twice causing its player base to fall from 300k to about 20k. - Alex, What is Star Wars Galaxies? - that is correct!

Evidence would be something present in the arguments of a reasonable person with perspective, not someone claiming the end of SOE's existence for the the purposes of rationalizing fanatical hatred.

the numbers ?  It was stated in a post recently and a few months ago I reposted numbers for a Friday night on SWG-NGE in the rumor room and that had only 10k players - SWG playership is super scary low . no doubt.

purposes of rationalizing fanatical hatred?  Muhahaha - blame it SOE - my bio and comment on my Blog. Thanks.

everything sony has done since EQ1 has been a failure...

without EQ1 the entire online gaming branch would go under.

EQ1 pays for all of their other projects still...

Muhahaha , I will pass on the hit and the bong too!  Did I say that SOE was the bottom of the list - er not yet - but if I was the CEO , I would not play the competitive product (WoW) to the degree of being on a guild and answering questions of the failures of my products on the guilds website - Do you think that the CEO of Pepsi would be seen drinking a Coke product ?  Love that Smedley , Not really towing the company Line.
