Solo play these days?

BlakesrealmBlakesrealm Member UncommonPosts: 45
I'm hitting the semi-burnout point with WoW again, and am thinking of coming back to try EQ2. I haven't played in over a year, guesstimate, and one of the main things I like in games is the ability to solo all the time, whenever I want. How is that aspect of EQ2 these days? And is there a good class(es) that youd' recommend? I prefer tank types, or even Rogue types, that are also wanted in groups.

Also is there a place to download the whole client, is the trial the whole thing? I know my account should still be there, but my disks have vanished into the void somewhere.

Thanks.

You can solo all you want to in eq2.  You will never get much in the way of gear upgrades but have a small chance to get a master 1 spell once in a blue moon.  The quest are not all that inventive but if ya rack up enough you can do them with out realizing it.  Makes for a good few coins on the side, not great coin but decent.

I have played two tank types that seem to really solo well.  SK's and Monks to me are the best soloers.  Both are valuable to groups with thier pluses and minuses.  SK is a mit tank that takes alot to hold aggro and monk is a luck tank ( avoidence chance ) that can hold aggro very well.

Also is there a place to download the whole client, is the trial the whole thing?

If you own the game and have entered a cd code, all you need to do is log in and it will download any expansions and adventure packs you have on your account.

I know my account should still be there, but my disks have vanished into the void somewhere. Thanks.

You can solo if you like with very little issues and make some coin if repeatable quests, spell/crafting book drops. If you know what crafting books are desired a lot by certian crafting professions you can farm for them by disabling combat xp and then rake in some nice gold/plat.

If you want a good tank class that can solo but is desired in groups then Zerkers IMHO are great. Especially with their AOE attacks and plate armor. A Zerker is basically a DPS Plate Tank who outside of raids will tank great in small groups and can solo fine. Go to the main EQ2 website search for it in Google. They have a link to a trail download of the entire game. If you decide to subscribe you can do so easliy and keep playing.

Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

    Game(s) I Am Currently Playing:

    GW2 (+LoL and BF3)

Thanks for the info and replies guys, I appreciate you taking the time.

After this weekend, my mother is in town, I think I'll give the game a try again.

Soloing is much better than it was at release.  At lvl 68 i have soloed 98% of the time.  You wont get the great raid gear but there is still some stuff out there for non raiders that is pretty good.

My experience with the Templar class up to level 40 is that soloing is nearly impossible for a templar past level 20-30. I heard that pet classes have the easiest time soloing, even taking on mobs that an entire party would have a hard time with.

Thanks again for the replies everyone. :)

I've recently come back to the game, and soloing seems fairly viable, though obviously you miss out on some of the social element of the game. On Test right now they are testing an experience change where lower-conning greens and low blues will provide more xp, I think this will help soloers, especially at higher levels.

Thanks for the reply. That change on test would be very interesting, and would probably help me make my choice whether to resub or not. Knowing that leveling solo would be easier, thanks to the increased exp from the lower conning mobs, would go a long way.

Bruisers, monks, and zerkers seem to be the most popular PVE server soloers. If you play on a pvp server that changes of course. If you are going to solo pvp you'd want to be a ranger or assassin prolly.

That depends somewhat on what it is you want to solo.  Wizards, for example are one of the best classes at killing high con ^^^ heroic named mobs.  If my Wizard gets a yellow, non casting ^^^ heroic named mob in an open area it’s as good as dead.  At the same time white solo mobs can give me trouble if they are social because if you attack them near their friends I will have several pounding on me and be dead before I can do anything about it.

A bruiser or shadowknight, however can use proximity aggro to get the mob attacking them and simply take the hits until that mob is in a safe place for them to kill it but would die quickly if they tried to fight a yellow ^^^ heroic.

IMO the overall best solo classes are Coercers, Bruisers, Shadowknights, Necromancers, and Conjurers.  Bruisers and Shadowknights are both tank classes so they have the defenses to take some hits.  Bruisers have great DPS for a tank plus a variety of stuns, stifles and a self heal on a fairly long timer.  Shadowknights also have decent DPS for a tank, though not as high as the bruiser, and have life taps they can use to heal themselves in combat for much more total healing then the bruiser gets.  Both can kill blue ^^^ heroic mobs if they are well played and well equipped.

Conjurers and necromancers are mage classes and have high DPS, but since they are also pet based they can use a tank pet to hold aggro while they nuke, and they also have some ability to heal their pet.  Their pets are good enough that they can fill in as a groups tank if a real tank is unavailable.  Either the tank pet or scout pet is sufficient to allow them to kill solo mobs very quickly and easily.  The tank pet is also sufficient to allow them to kill green and maybe blue ^^^ heroics solo.

Summoners can kill tougher heroics, but need to use slightly different techniques like rooting or slow kiteing while their pet nukes.  I've even seen video of a summoner soloing slected epic x2 (2 group raid mob) encounters above their own level using slow kiteing.  This only works on encounters made up of multiple heoric mobs because a mob that is Epic X2 on it's own is immune to most roots and run speed debuffs.

Possibly the best overall soloing class is the coercer.  Even though a charmed mob isn’t as powerful as it would otherwise be a charmed heroic mob can easily kill another heroic mob 4 or more levels below it.  So, if you have a master I charm and a some guts you can charm an orange ^^^ heroic and send it around killing white ^^^ heroics for which you get full credit.

In addition, if you damage the mob before you charm it when it dies you get credit for killing it, so you can charm a mob have it fight other mobs until it’s dead and you get credit for the kill.  Since you didn’t do more then 50% of the damage, however, loot drops are reduced and it causes a respawn bug so it’s better to break the charm before it dies, root it and do the last bit of damage yourself.

My main is a level 68 Berserker.  I also have a lvl 42 Swashbuckler who also mainly solo's.

As a 70 Templar I have to say soloing them is quite easy, but EXTREEMLY slow.  If you want a good "solo" class, pet classes tend to do the best.

Also, when GU#27 goes live you'll see a BOOST of EXP for green/blue and non-heroic mobs. They were not happy with the exp gain for solo players so are boosting it for mobs people typically solo (non-heroic stuff).

I dunno when it's going live but I wouldn't expect it to be to much longer.

Just wondering why would you play an MMORPG if you are just going to solo. Now I like to solo in some cases, when im farming mainly or when I don't have times to find a group. But here is my response to the post.

    - The XP awarded for killing green cons was reduded slightly from the previous increase in order to better balance the risk of fighting them compared to higher-con creatures. It remains a significant increase over green-con XP on the live servers.

They made it so where solo green mobs gave more xp. Obviously it was to much so they turned it down slighty.

Why does it matter how/why he solo's. We all do it at some point or another. Some people play single player doom, some play multiplayer, some play a mix. It all depends on what they way.

Solo play in mmos is a part of almost every single players life at some point.

New addition to this thread from the great minds of EQ2 .........

Seems all xp will be getting a slight nudge in the positive direction, green mobs will even give a much greater amount of xp then they used to.  This was probally to appease the clerics that took forever to solo a green becuase it was thier only means to do so.

Blue cons will be getting a slight boost in xp and even raid mobs will get a signifigant boost to xp.  It was commented the raid xp boost was to appease the the raiders who had many wipes and accumulated alot of xp debt ................ sorry but lol to that line of thinking, reward the bad players .......... or at least let em break even.

Last but not least all fabled gear is having its repair cost reduced signifigantly.  So if your a soloer and see that raid gear peice on broker ......... buy it, wont cost much to fix now.

if you want to solo EQ2 is not the game to choose. Way to many tough heroics around that you can't take on till you ar 6 to 7 levels ahead of them. The loot drops suck as well. This game is meant to be played in groups.

    just an opinion is all.

Last time i checked Doom was not an MMO.

I quit EQ2 and will not come back because I feel the devs have abandoned their pledge to not ignore solo/small group players. There is almost nothing to do once you hit lvl 40 except to grind those down arrows mobs that are mixed with the heroics. Gear is subpar for soloers/small groupers, and it just keep getting worse. Don't bother spiining your wheels here if you're looking for a game that supports solo type play.

No, not so much, seeing as he misread an example of diversity of playing styles. Maybe it's typed in invisible ink, but nowhere do I see him saying Doom is an MMO.

I spend most of my time soloing, because 9 times out of 10, playing with other people gives me heartburn. I prefer not to deal with idiots that think they are the expert on playing my class, or that all loot drops belong to them and have a hissy fit because they lose one lotto. That's a mere two examples of why I prefer to solo. I'm sure I could come up with more. Like tanks that think taunt is an overhyped skill.
