Howdy, Stranger!

It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

Which would you prefer for MMORPGs, a subscription or one time fee.

Just wanting to get the community's feel on this question.  What would you prefer when dealing with paying for MMORPGs:

Buy the game for 30 dollars and then expansions for 15-20 (probably every 7-8 months).

or

Pay a subscription fee every month of 5 dollars but download the game and expansions for free.

I understand that it works out so that if you play less than 6 months it'd be more expensive, and over 6 months you are saving money.  However not only take that into account but just personal preference, ease, and what you would like to see more.

Vote if you would but also leave comments and with your thoughts if you have time.

Thank you

Well actually the thing is I'm referring to my game.  We are picking up development speed and may launch sooner than we hoped (still a good distance off though) and someone brought this up.

Initially it was going to be a free download and free expansions but five dollars a month to play.

But some of the devs are suggesting 30 dollars to buy the game, 15-20 for the big expansions, and no subscription fee.

So trying to get the community's feel on it.

In an ideal world just a one time fee, realistically though I readily cough up the money even if its a subscription.

I say it all depends on the quality of the game.

    1st one of course!
I like the way that you dont NEED to buy the expansion...

    And that there are choises...
If you pay every month, one day you dont like the game and you have payed like one year already...

I choose subscribtion. Why? Well.. The company needs an income. If they didn't get it from the subscriptions, they'd need to make expansion packs instead. Lots of them. Worthless expansion packs, that people would still buy.
I'd rather just pay the subscribtion fee.

Why not just come out and say that then? I like people who are direct about their intentions and not trying to hide it.  Don't have time for BS.

How about for free?  No up front cost and no monthly fee?  I bet you would be popular if you game plays well.

I would rather pay a one time fee, but if it's a good game it's worth it to subscribe.

It's not like he was "trying to hide" something, dude. He just asked a question, and, frankly, it doesn't matter the circumstanses, since he was just asking your opinion. Free isn't an option either, dude, because it costs money to develope a game, and to operate the servers.

I say you do the monthly fee. I mean, that way, if someone only ends up playing for a couple months, they're only out ten bucks. If they want to play longer, and hopefully they will, they will.

Anyway, good luck on the game.

Well if I was trying to hide something I wouldn't have come out and said it without even being questioned.  There is no BS and there was no reason to say anything more than stating my question, just wanted people's opinions.

As to the other poster who said "where are you getting five dollars" well it's what the development team had decided on, we aren't making the game for money so at 5 dollars we should be able to support all the servers and upgrades, etc.  10-15 is just out for money.

    Actually, I prefer no subscription

Subscription fees are pure profit for the company.

This encourages many companies to make schit games, because you are guaranteed to make a big profit. Thats why we have people from Romania and China making MMO's, trying to attract that dollar.

The moral of this story is don't pay subs for games.

Play the trial. If you like it, purchase it.

When an expansion comes out, read the reviews, if its good, buy it.

Thats the only way to insure you are getting something for your money rather than just feeding some rich megacorp like Sony with more money from the children of fat stupid Americans.

    Riff raff like me.

I'm tired of subscription games. I don't play them as long as I play non subscription games, and they cost more. Having actually seen Guild Wars it's going to be an uphill battle getting me to subscribe to anything anymore.

Go subscription.  The only way to upkeep your servers without relying on "hopefully people purchase the game this month so we can pay for our servers"  You dont want to run into that mess.

Also your community would be bad, with a subscription the people that dont like the game will leave instead of complaining a lot in the game chat.  People wont pay for a game they dont like, but they will play a free month fee to try and lure other people away.

  • TheodorykTheodoryk Member Posts: 1,453
On a side note, I wanted to say that a monthly fee is easier to budget and more convenient than running out and buying an expansion every whatever months. Also, I would say that a monthly subscription fee would provide a more stable source of income. Right now, I honestly don't feel the fifteen bucks a month being charged to my credit card, I give more than that to unicef, the subscription fees really are pennies. Running out dropping fifty to a hundred bucks on an expansion is a bit more of a substantial decision, people have to make a conscience effort to attain the new content, and many of them may decide against it.

Furthermore, you'll be attracting two different kinds of playerbases with the two different models. I think that with a subscription fee, you will be gaining a core of loyal customers, many of which will be mature people with jobs looking for a game to settle down with for the long haul. With the "buy the expansion pay no fee" model, you'll be attracting alot of "flavor of the month" customers, sure they'll buy the initial product, but probably a very small percentage of them will stick with the game for any substantial period of time. You'll get alot of kiddies that will kill the chance of establishing a good ingame community before it even arises, and which will turnoff the older, more mature, and possibly more loyal playerbase, who will leave your game in search of one where the community is a little more attuned to their preferences. An excellent example of this is Guild Wars. I know alot of people that love the game, I being one of them, but left simply because they can't stand the overwhelming majority of idiots that infest the game. When you find yourself turning off the chat channels and isolating yourself from the general population in an online game which by definition is supposed to encourage interaction between players, the game becomes self-defeating, and its time to find something new.

Also wanted to say, at least you're considering an "either or" scenario. One thing I can't stand is devs who decide to charge both a monthly fee and a fee for additional content. This is why I'll never touch Everquest, or Final Fantasy XI, I understand that everyone wants to make a profit, but I can't stomach this kind of blatant greed.

Lack of subscription fee = worse community.

Thanks for the responses so far, looks like the subscription is a favorite but I'll let the poll run for a little while to make sure.

If enough people play a game, the subscription fee dosen't keep out the retards, WoW is a great example.

    I like GW type marketing

You buy Their Game = infinite time on line

Doesnt matter which expansion you buy, or whether you buy just one expansion, as long as you got a copy of their game you play it forever.

This is good imho because you can choose whether to pass on a certain expansion because you dont like it/doesnt apply to you. This means its cheaper and adds more versatility.

Plus u still get bug fixes and updates that are not expansion oriented for free forever(xept for storage increase lol)

    = cheaper/ideal/convenient/sensible
