Would you play EQ2 if it had a graphics revamp/new engine?

EQ2 seems to me to be a fairly good game, but the graphics engine and character/mob design are hideous. It lags my rather high-end system on occasion and even when it runs smoothly, the character look simply turns me off. SOGA models help somewhat, but don't quite solve the problem. From what I've heard, this seems to turn a great many people off of the game. If a new engine and new designs were to be implemented (still in a realiistic style, just not plastic-looking as they are now) would you consider giving the game a try?

Hmm, EQ2's graphics are one of it's few redeeming features in my eyes. It's not a GFX revamp that's need, it's a full game revamp. The game lacks .... fun, to be perfectly honest.

The graphics are my favorite part of the game. I didn't stop playing EQ2 because of the way it looks...

Turn graphic settings lower, then you won't experience the graphic laggy.

EQ2's graphic engine is very advanced, but the artwork lacks...

I wouldnt play it if it had a full revamp and then went free forever.

I actually liked the game's look... with the SOGA models on anyway.  But the damn thing crashed too much for me.  My computer isn't cutting edge, but I run out of video memory even on the lowest settings.  Considering that I can run pretty much every other MMO I've tried at the default graphics settings, I find no excuse for this.  The only other problem I had with EQ2 is that all anyone ever talks about is how much they hate WoW.

Artwork in EQ2 is just plain disaster.

Gameplay is very solid (who ever says otherwise didnt play EQ2 in last few months)

Artwork is the reason i quited EQ2

Lol solid gameplay my ass man.

How can you calll players getting nerfed every other 2 weeks "solid"? And yes, I played within the last few months (before LU24) and LU24... what a trainwreck. They completly screwed over many classes (that sucked to begin with) and made the games PvP even more unballanced.

The game honestly is just crap. The artwork, as you said, is a disaster. I can't belive those who vote EQ2 for best graphics... yeah, it has the engine (which I may add is also poorly optimized, lags way too much for even a good PC) but artwork is horrible.

i'm in the 7 days trial and i dont like it.  it kind of retard.....this game.

EQ2 is not a bad game per se, but it definately feels a little too 'dry'.

I agree abou the artwork, however. The implementation is absolutely atrocious. The SOGA models were worse still, IMO. I guess the game  just didn't captivate my imagination like the original game did.

I tried playing for a few months, but could not get past the boredom.

The character models are ugly. It is sad that I am better looking than the average character. All the males look somewhat retarded, and I mean that literally.

There is little content and tons of "kill 10 deer" grind, which strangely started making me feel badly. I do not want to kill deer and badgers.

Since the world is divided, it takes forever to move from the field to the city. I noticed that I would avoid moving from place to place just to avoid the time delay.

The PVP is kind of annoying because there's a lot of high level players running around killing people. I wouldn't even get mad when killed, because due to the level system, you have no chance. However, the fun would be when a bunch of low levels would come to aid each other and kill a high level enemy. This was pretty rare though.

    Nope.

Since what they did with NGE, I will not give SOE or LucasArts any more money. Period.

EQ2 needs more than a graphics revamp to get me to play it again. In fact, I don't think it *could* get me to play it again. The problem with EQ2, IMO (other than it's made by SOE), is that it lacks a soul. The game just feels lifeless and stale. It has no spark, no moments where you are amazed by some aspect of the game. It just plods along in a mindnumbing manner. After six weeks of that, I couldn't take it anymore and I quit.

    No.

    so...

  • ValiumSummerValiumSummer Member Posts: 1,008

I tried it because it had great graphics...

I quit it because I didn't enjoy it.

Fix the "I didn't enjoy it part" and I would play it again.

The graphics were fine to me.

Graphics is definitely not the problem I have with that game.

Same here :D I didn't want to kill deers and badgers. I mean, when I saw a badger family I was seriously against killing them.

good game both in graphics and gameplay.

Problem is to be fun it really demands interactions. The game is so guild based that it means first line of call for a class is always in guild chat and sometimes groups are more willing to wait for others to log in then use randoms .

So basically if you are someone in an inactive guild or non guilded it becomes a nightmare unless you are a very needed class and raids are almost impossible without a good guild or good friends.

So you see someone moan he cannot find a group despite been on a crowded server and in the end lets face it EQ2 is a group oriented game.It has solo content but its really more of a back up to the main content which is often group or raid content and usually guild guys only do this when waiting for people to log on.

Now to sort this out it requires both community and developers  to change .The community  attitude(a left over from the days of group debt in which random pick ups were giving group debt in bucket loads.this is gone but the attitude has stayed to group with only ppl you know ).And maybe make solo quests more rewarding. Now atm some of the most fun quest are actually solo based but since they are not rewarding and everyone wants phat leet rarely see ppl do it.

I HATED the Combo system in the game....how it FORCED you to do the big combos to get the big effects, otherwise you and your raid structure suffered horribly.  I disliked the graphics tremendously....why...why oh why could they not have just tweaked the EQ1: PoP character models just a tad and left those alone?  The rest of the world stuff is fine...but I freaking HATED how BLEH the models were in the game for the most part.  When I quit, there was also still that nasty system memory leak that forced everyone to restart their computers every couple hours, otherwise your machine ran like crap....even tho you had a good machine.

I dunno....after playing EQ1 for 5 1/2 years, perhaps I was just simply ready to move on from Norrath?  WoW was a fun place to visit for 18 months, but CoH-CoV has my attention again and I'm prolly going to stay there for some time to come.

    Oh...as to the OP's question:

If they changed the Graphic's Engine and whatnot?  Possibly.  But probably not tho.  It's a SoE product.  They ruin everything.

I would not play any game that enforce raiding or PvP on me, with maybe a FEW exceptions, SoE products (nor Sigil/Blizzard/Turbines/EA products either) are not elligeable for these exceptions.

No amount of graphics re-work would change that...and beside...EQ2 graphics are wonderful.

Dude are you serious ???? Omg, Iam not playing cause the graphics are so ugly, mostly the charakter models looks so shiity and the animations how your charakter is moving and so /sigh ... even DAoC today looks better than EQ2 and its not even lagging ... EQ2 probably has 3248348483 polygons or something which doesnt make it look good it just lags even on my machine ... I really cant understand how someone could think that EQ2 has good graphics.

Lets take Half-Life2 for example, Iam playing on max settings and I have no problems at all on 32 player servers and it looks really good. Now take EQ2 if u are playing it on max. settings even on a superb machine and there isnt even someone in your area it still lags like hell oO and on top of that its not even looking good ....

Sorry but EQ2 in general really isnt a good product :/

I agree, character art was bad. It did have too many similar looking armors/clothes. Same mesh - bit different textures and colors.

But there was other reasons also:

    • EQ2 crashed a lot in my computer. Most likely reason was either my motherboard or outdated processor (AMD2100). So I would need to buy new computer first.
    • Too many adventurer packs and expansions. I don't want to buy new expansion/adventurer pack every 4 month.
    • EQ2 didn't bring anything new to genre. Static, fantasy, xp grind, level-class based and holy trinity game. I have played my share of that kind games. Enough of those.
    • SOE and LA have lost my trust after all that has happened in the SWG. I am not going to invest more money to those companies.

I never liked the EQ2 character models but even revamping them to something I like wouldn't suddenly change what I dislike about the rest of the game and that is even before mentioning SoE.
