Play the free trial and see.  Personally I didnt like it, but it just wasnt my game. The community was nice and the people who run it. Boils down to what you want in a game...or what type of game you like.

Game wasn't for me. Take away the graphics and it feels like a 2D singleplayer freelancer game. The community is very nice though. But the emptiness of space got to me in the end. Personally I preferred having the feeling of see other toons. Seeing ships was impersonal and wasn't the same in getting the social and community feeling.

Not to mention you will always be behind the players that started  earlier than you.  There is absolutely no way around it.  No matter how skilled and knowledgable of the game you are, you'll never be on the same level as other players.  It's not even a skill based system.  The game is entirely devoted to how much subscription time you have.  With an actual skill system,  the game might actually be playable.

If you like it yes. If you don't then No.

You have played the free trial? If not go and play it and make up your own mind.

    >groan<

This has been countered so much it's a shame this is still uttered.

It is true that you will never has as many skillpoints as a vet player.

    But...

All skills end at lvl 5, and the difference between lvl 4 and 5 is tiny, and it take soon much longer to train from lvl 4-5 then it is to train from lvl 1-4.

All the veterans gain by their longer play time is the ability to diversify more, they can train more skills in different game styles or be able to fly other racial ships.

The end result is, if you focus your training, you can become a match to that 2 year vet in months, and a fleet of new players in frigates can easily take down a couple vets in Battleships.

Everyone was new at one point in this game, and those that stick with it, find their enjoyment and the differences between their skillpoints and a older vet's skillpoints become irrelevant.

But as far as the original question.

Try it out and get the trial. Do the tutorial and the tutorial missions (you get some nice loot at the end), and I recommend you join EVE University.

    Hope you enjoy EVE

Sure, you might be right..your not gunna be as good as the guy with the battle-ship equiped with 20 high rail guns and 15 rocket launchers..best shields...and an afterburner like a madman..but this rule applies for so many other games..there are few games where the nub..who joined last week..is as good as the guy who's been playing for a year...

example..WoW..i have a 60 on there, i SUCK, because i don't spend 45 horus a week attempting to get epiced out....

Also i agree with what The other guy said about it depends on what skills you pick...i've been playing eve for about 5 days...im already decked out in the best frigate gellante's have to offer, and some pretty nice rockets/rail-guns....its not hard at all to catch up to the guy who's been playin for years...

You cant fit 35 weapons on even the largest of ships, so dont go making stuff up pls.  Try the gmae.  If you dont like it fine.  If you do, well welcome aboard.

Yes, but only 30 days at a time...  The game is not for everyone, and doing a 6 month-1 year subscription is not the way to go.

    WRONG!!

DO not let the whinnings about not being able to "grind" skill points deter you.  Skill points do not reflect your worth or value in EVE.

Test the game. You'll either love it or you won't.

WOW you can play twice a week just for fun.

EVE is a full time job.

I dissagree. Due to time contraints I generally only have time to play 1 or 2 hours a night, but I still have enough money to support myself and my corp. Of course it's harder to solo but that is as it should be, its a MMO after all.

Everything about this game is great except the skill system. You have to wait weeks to max out your skills. The skill system is basically picking a skill and watching it get higher over time. In other words, if you want to learn how to use hybrid turrets, you pick the size and start training the skill...you will max it out within a few days/weeks depending on rank and attributes. Overall, the skill system is what made me decide not to purchase this game.

I started playing it after I left SWG this month and I love it. I do not need a ground game.

Ive been playing this game for last 9 months and i love it, the fact that i dont have to play 24/7 just to reach another level is very comforting.

That said - its not the SP that make the player worthy, its his own skills. Unlike in WOW where 2-3 20 level characters can do nothing to lvl 60, here couple of young players can with ease incapacitate older one provided they know what they are doing. When you get some experience and skills even the oldest players are beatable, depenting on what they are flying, what equipemnt they are using and what you are using. being a member of pirate corporation i can assume i know what im talking about :P

And what does maxing out that hybrid skill get you? 5% more damage on your turrets, whoopdiedoo. Here's a tip, I know it may be hard believe, but you DON'T NEED TO MAX EVERY SKILL OUT TO COMPETE.

yeah um, my character is 5 months old, and she is in the top mining vessel (the Hulk) and the Freighter (biggest transport ship). You can't get better than that. I can mine just as well and transport as many resources as a player who has been playing for 3 years. You are talking rubbish.

I hate you my character is 2 years old almost and I can't fly a frieghter. And I can't fly a Hulk either. I know you must be a one of those MACROERS that are AFKing thier skills to max... oh wait, you can't do that in EVE. This is the perfect example of the beauty of the skill system. I'm almost 5x older than she is and can't fly some of the ships she can.
  • DrakolusDrakolus Member UncommonPosts: 134

I am over two years old now and I still cant fly the Hulk...not to mention I am no where NEAR a freighter.  I can however fly a variety of ships from Frigates all the way up to Battleships including just about everything in between.  My character has been a generalist this whole time but I tend to lean towards the Industrial/Mining side.

After 2 years guess what...a player with 1 month under his belt, a little bit of planning and thought and a little bit of guts can still kick my butt.  Planning, intelligence and knowing your ships and fittings are WAY more important than skill points.  Heck, after over 2 years I just got my first solo PVP kill last night.  I didnt get it because my skill points went out there and smacked him.

I was NPC hunting in low security space.  Most people fit for all out damage and survivability when they do this.  I laid a trap however.  I had my Battlecruiser fitted for PVP so when a pirate warped into the asteroid belt I was hunting in, I let him come screaming in and target me first.  When I targetted him back I warp scrambled and webbed him.  I smacked the crap out of his Capacitor and began to pound away.  After launching 5 drones and hitting him with some nasty pulse lasers he went boom and a nice Interceptor kill mail was in my inbox.

What would be the difference if a 3 month old character wrote that?  Maybe the number of drones or he may have had to use tech 1 lasers.  In the end he still would have won because he had set up for PVP and had stuck to his plan.

There is no "I win" button in EVE...there is no "Epics" that you can farm so you can PWN Noobs all day.  There is only a fairly level playing ground (damn underpowered lasers) and your willingness to tip the scales in your favor.  Thats what I love about EVE.

Drakolus, you should have gone minmitar... Projectile guns are .

Basically I fall under the same category, I've been playing Eve off and on since beta, maybe 2 months at a time max, and stopping for about 6-7months.  I have two accounts one with 14million sp, another with 9million sp.  And although it pains me not to have invested the time i could have into the game, I could easily start another character and whoop my own ass within a month's time.

Eve is very open ended, your enjoyment will be reflective of your creativity, and willingness to explore the universe of possibilities.  I'm actually a pirate right now, operating in .4-.1 space, and I love every minute of it.  I'm working towards tech 2 guns, then I will go for tech 2 ships, probably interceptor->interdictor route.  Estimated time until I reach my current goal: 37 days 23hours :)

EDIT:  I was previously a pure industrialist/economist, so that sort of justifies my being able to drive a hulk and refine at 100% efficiency :)

yes if your a patient person. Eve is not for the power levler and not for the perosn who needss instant gratification. If you like a complex game with lots of player politics then this could be your ultamite game.

I had to approches to EVE. The first time I didn't stay long I just was looking for quick relaxing action and after Tutorial I just fogured out it is not for me.
But recenlty after 4 months I tried again. And I love it so far.
You need to give it a try and learn the game. When you do and you will get hold of it it starts to shine.

But don't start when you in rush or have just hour or two to play. To start EVE you need to be relaxed and have evening or two off ahead of you.

After first steps though there is no problem at all to just jump in for hour or so go for some pirate hunt or do quick trades.

But it is very, very good game.

Ah and one more thing. The battles are not so dry and uninteresting as they may seem. Again when You get hold on the game mechanics the battles are very entertaining.

    Regards,
    adolf

140,000 people seem to think it's good enough to subscribe to.    Source:  GenCon 2006 interview with CCP.

    It just keeps growing... :)

I believe that moves it into the slot of:
    Most Popular Sci-Fi MMO...

Yes... EVE just passed SWG folks...

(Number for SWG is "between 110 and 175k players"  That averages out, being nice, at about 135k players.  Personally I think SWG is closer to the 110k mark )

Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

TO each their own opinion.... Which means everyone has an opinion. For such a short question, the short answer is YES.  Eve is a complete game with lots of content. Its 99% bug free so there is little chance u will be annoyed to the point where u cant take it anymore. Will you like it? Who knows. Would be great if OP was a bit more specific what he is looking for.

In short, Eve, just like any other games, has good and bad sides. Different people, however, have different opinions, so where one consideres Eve to be bad, another considers it to be good.

To me, the bad thing is that you cant really reach 50% of Eve's content unless you are a) very powerfull or have lots of ISK or b) you are in a powerfull corp. Im talking about 0.4 and below systems. Being a diehard soloer, I had great trouble venturing into 0.4 and below space. Several close calls for me and I said, no thank you - so I was limited to 0.5 and above :( I dont fancy PvP, never did, and unfortunately Eve is not as friendly to PvE soloers as I hoped. Nevertheless, if you are not hardcore soloer and PvEr, Eve is a great way to entertain yourself with extremely fun financial system (player run everything!), great graphics ( they are gonna get even better with next expansion), good PvP (maybe great, i dunno, not my way to have fun) and good developer dedication. Definitely worth a try and subscribtion price.

I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
