Turbine October 1999 Beta open beta:
Saw it at pcgameworld.com. The internet was still young, lag didn't exist.
November 1999: people join Asheron's Call Darktide. The Mercs slowly become a dominant force.
December 1999: Sudden season. Robes are introduced and will forever be the infamous item that ruined Asheron's Call.
January -April 2000: more people join Darktide.(The pvp server). Finally people discover how to become l3wt dudes, grief, find the best templates, and abuse banes with robes.
Robes, like I said, are the infamous item that proved NPK content ,without PVP content divergence, is not possible, without many many complications.
The Mercs becoming one if not the best pvp guild at the time, leave. Because they are smart enough to know, AC will be broken, indefinately.
May-December 2000- The Golden Age of Asheron's Call. People played for fun more then items or levels.
2001-2003-3rd party applications: Cheats, Ken Karl, M$, Turbine idiocy, ruines pvp and the npk game itself.
The concept of putting item B to substitute item A, while making you do boring quest/leveling, goes on. Booriing. Ebay anyone? Macro so you level for free anyone? Chain whore so you get 126 without working for it anyone? Dupe anyone?
2004-
New chain system has been placed, so you can't chain whore anymore. Four years after the release?! Turbine buys the license from M$. Sadly it's too late, unless they server reset. For me though, I've put up with enough crap.
AC can't be pvp and npk. It needed to choose one and stick to it. Like COH. AC was suppose to be all pvp, too bad it chose to try and do both.
Mythic Entertainment:DAOC
-Game is good on the NPK side. Leveling is still a chore, most of the time. Sadly balance degrades instead of improving as the game goes on. Midgard gets hideous nerfs, since the population of players is mostly Albion. So does Hibernia.(But Midgard gets hit the hardest)
-A year after the massive Shadowblade nerfs, and the isane Albion buffs, Mythic has done nothing. Don't believe me? Head on over to vnboards.ign.com (Midgard rogue classes), ask for yourself.
Sold my account for a few dollars, screw Mythic. Mythic employees have even been quoted to not care about Midgard. Matt Friar for example said something along the lines of "Friars will never be nerfed".
FYI the Friar at the time was an overpowered class. It got balanced, but it's really a mixed bag. Considering Midgard and Hibernia were nerfed.
Mythicrealms.com
Anyway Mythic Entertainment also kindly put up mythicrealms.com. 9.95$/mo for old Magestorm and other game players.
They hinted a patch three years ago to fix their games. We got nada, zippo, abandonment. They even say they're not making a profit, which is BS. Game ops on the mud DFC treat people like dirt. Chaos(Similar to Midgard realm) is the underpopulated realm again, and they aren't getting any help.
History repeats itself for Mythic Entertainment.
Conclusion:
Turbine is full of people who don't know how to communicate with their player base. You can post something on there and get maybe one reply a month, if you're lucky.(AC 2 boards)
Mythic, well the record speaks for itself. Money conquered Mark Jacobs a long time ago. Nice to forget about the people who got you there Mark. You, sad sad man.

Biggest pile of crap ever written.
So much is untrue about this post i have no idea where to start LOL.
Well, this was obviously written by someone who has been there, but it is a highly subjective write-up. There are many who would disagree with the asssessment, but I respect Unstoppable's opinion. I wish there had been a bit more elaboration, e.g. WHY did robes ruin AC? (I never played AC1, so I'm unaware of the significance of robes)
Most original AC players were/are fiercely loyal to AC and Turbine, choosing to lay blame for AC's problems at the feet of Microsoft. Turbine's purchase of the AC franchise has been hailed by most AC fans with whom I have spoken, and AC2 seems to be getting a shot in the arm now.
As far as the nerfs/class balancing in DAoC, my experience is that Mythic has worked as hard as any game publisher to keep the playing field level between the three realms. The recent imbalances resulting from the MLs in ToA, for example, have prompted Mythic to overhaul the frontiers in an effort to reset the scale. This is being done for free, BTW.
No matter what nerfs or changes are made to a game, someone is going to be upset...usually those who play the nerfed characters. I imagine Unstoppable did not play a friar

Old timer.
Ok first let me say a lot of what koltrane wrote is the truth.
The post is subjective and biased.
I will not touch on AC since i only played it for about 2 months on launch and barely remember much there.
DAoC.I played beta .I played hib bard to 50.Midguard skald to 50.Merc to 50(cleric to 40s).
In beta we did very little RvR to be honest and on launch things were not balanced.I started as a middie myself. The realm which was weakest was certainly the hib realm and they got most of the boost(and deserved it).
Now basically no realm was not hit by the nerfs. The smite cleric was probabaly the most powerful class in the game at launch. It got nerfed. This is an albion class!
Along the lines archers got nerfed and I think many will agree it was right.Basically few archers would stand on a wall and hold a whole army back.3 or 4 shots to kill a plate tank with full buffs. It was a nerf to all realms!
Along the line some classes got boosted and nerfed. Now as someone who played beta and recently got back into the game I can tell you the game is much more balanced now.
I dunno why you think friars are overpowered because I always see them die fast.
I think mythic did a good job in balancing the game even though its certainly not perfect.
I know many who played archers quit because they could not own all the classes around but who cares. No one likes leet guys and many who played them were just that.
So sitting down and saying "boohoo mids got nerfed bad" is totally wrong.
Now most people do not play albion .Albion has the greatest population of the 3 realms but saying most play albion is totally wrong.Albion has probabaly the best PvE around and gives a feeling of medival camelot .So naturally its a preferred realm.I dount it has anything to do with the strongest realm .

OK Unstoppable I have played AC for a very long time since release and I sort of see what you are talking about. But, you are speaking of things that were corrected a month later? did you ever stay past the monthly update after Dec 1999?
About AC needing to be PvP or PvC but not both I just don't see why it isn't working? Seems fine to me. Well on DT it wasn't PvC so it should be ok with you there. But as for the major servers with PvP turning and now evern PK lite I don't see where you have your logic.
Now as for the macroing, buffs, dupes and such yes. Also I think Turbine won't get a good comeback unless they either do a server wipe and also stop Decal. Now that is highly debatable, but I think the ones already there would scream, but I can't speak for the ones that are thinking of coming back. Who knows, but I do know that the new server they plan to open will take care of what you are griping about. However to me with decal still there there still will be lvl 126 players within a month which is bad enough to keep me from coming back. The res update and expansion is not good enough for me to overlook decal and friends.
Onr final thing I would like to say is that I know alot of ppl out there compare one MMO to the other, but what is REALLY FUNNY!!!! is that about half of the stuff people complain about in most MMO's are really a problem of how they play these games. It is like ppl getting pissed off because they shoot themselves in the foot. Well stop shooting yourself in the foot, DUH! In other words for most out there to comprehend. Simple terms.... Man, that game sucks, it is such a level treadmill. Hmmm, I thinks if it has levels for you to work on it will be if that is HOW you play it. or focus on your progress. Truly the only way to stop the LEVEL TREADMILL is to STOP PLAYING GAMES WHERE YOU LEVEL UP. DOH! OR get a very large 2x4 and ask someone in your family to hit you across the face with it SO F'ING hard it knocks you the HELL out and when you come to, you may figure out that hey. DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT IN THE GAME SO IT DOESN'T FEEL LIKE A LEVEL TREADMILL. Wow, maybe if they remove over 50% of the portals in AC you will travel more and get to know the land more, Wow what a concept you can adventure in the game and find stuff without someone telling you the coords to discover things. Amazing huh? That is one major thing wrong with most MMO's these days...The Devs are listening too much to the lazy minded individuals and eventually we won't even have to do anything to gain exp with our characters. Wow, perfect example MEO leveling without being logged on . Man what is this all coming to. Screw MMO's if they are going to follow this . I can't do this, it is too hard, I hate this game, my character is gimp, it has too much land and I have to run too far. Man. why even buy the freakin game, just leave it along and stop ruining our fun and go play something more simple. If MMO's keep heading this way, forget it I will just play NwN and hope some whiner comes in my server so I can throw his arse in a camp fire or something.
Well, nuff of this, Damn Unstoppable, you got me going dude. LOL
Now all you TRUE Carebears go back to playing your Sims game. Oh BTW, Why in the hell do ppl from PvP call PvC players Carebears? Doesnt make sense. I never knew a carebear could go and slay anything more than bread. Or does devoted PvP players think it will make them look tuff? Bah, only makes ya look like an Orc at Drarven Festival with 20 dwarves holding carving knifes. Duh, me takes on all ye littl' ones.
AC1 was a fun game until chain whoring got out of control, and the use of macros/bots farmed the shit out of all the good areas.
I played AC1 for two years, and came back twice for brief periods. Because of the chain whores and bots, etc AC1's content has been "super sized". You can reach level 126, but you can still gain exp to increase every skill you have. So in essense you can be like a level 200, 300, etc character.
When old players return what do they find? They discover that the content is so powerful that they have to chain for a while just to be able to handle it. If chains are now gone, then I feel for those who will try to survive in the uber areas.
Chains, bots, macros, and shit like decal is what fried AC1. It still has a decent population, but I don't know how much it can really grow anymore.

If Turbine would open up new servers with a serious graphics upgrade and no 3rd party apps or macros allowed, I'd go back in a heartbeat. I beta'ed AC1 and played for a long time before leaving, I've went back twice since then and have the itch to go back right now.
AC1 was all that's right with mmorpgs, (great combat, lot's o' content), and everything that's wrong with mmorpgs, (macros, 3rd party apps, exploits). AC2 was a graphics engine with a mmorpg added as an afterthought.
I'm still holding out hope that WOW will end up being as good as it's hype, if it isn't I may have to go back home to AC.
