Not QUITE the same but easily as complex. I have a demo of it I've been meaning to take the time to learn it. For something far less complex you could play Freelancer.
Or if you want to play a single player that's heavily based upon Elite (which is what inspired EVE to begin with) you can try Vega Strike

X3 is pretty similar to EVE, BUT you need a monster of a computer to play it with acceptable performance. Unless you got a badass laptop don't bother getting that game
On the other hand Freelancer plays great on any decent computer.

Err... it runs just fine on my P4 2.4 laptop w/1gb RAM and a humble GeForce 4400/64 video chipset. <=== 4 year old laptop.

Darkstar one is suprisingly good game, although a bit limited and less complicated then X3, but much more arcadishly-fun then X3. I tried X3 several times but was so frustrated by controls, navigation and GUI in general that I almost threw my PC out of window. Darkstar is more fun in combat and story, but you cant build an empire or trade corp per se, u can trade in goods and upgrade your ship but no making your own spacestations and factories, producing your goods, buying trade ships and setting up trade routes. If only X3 navigation and combat was more that of Darkstar then it would of been priceless.
PS: Freelancer is great too.

Hmmm ok I googled it and I have found a lot of information on it that got me REAAAAAAALY curious. So I googled it. Looks like it only released like last Monday.... wow you are on top of it...
I am pulling down the demo now... If it's good I'll probably run out and buy it next week or so. Always like having a good solid single player to play.
I played with X3 a bit last night and REALLY got pissed off at it. Like you said the UI is VERY kludgy and not very friendly or easy to use AT ALL. Nice game but.... whoever designed the interface needs to be taken out back with Uncle Guido.

Thanks for all the tips. I'll try out Freelancer and Darkstar One. I might try X3 but if its anything like X2... I lke deep games but this is really just for my laptop and those long travels. BTW, my laptop is a Dell XPS M170, should be able to handle most games these days, I had Oblivion running very well on it.

One thing you might think X3 has over EVE, is that it has a lot of Kha'ak.
Ha ha, it's a good game, but the storyline becomes hilarious rather than interesting after about the 5th time of hearing the voice actors use that word like it means something else.

Aye, Darkstar one was released just recently, but i still cannot buy it in Canada. I heard, however, that english version of darkstar one is very buggy. Im currently playing a german release with english soundfiles and its very stable and not buggy at all. I do not know if there is a big difference between these 2 releases (german and english). Just thought id mention that. Hopefully DS1 will be released in Canada and US soon.

Seriously, what were the devs smoking? o.O
