I think that this game will fail. Ive watched teh gameplay trailer, and god is it ever boring and slow paced. That and turbine is really bad at making good mmos, and they destroyed the original intent of this game. Before you were able to be evil and be a mage. Opps, thats just TOO FUN for this game, yoink! I mean a lotr pvp game would have rocked, but instead they ruined it.
Sure there is a chance it will do alright, but i doubt it will do very well...

they said that they have improved much since that time
The gameplay trailers were all made when the game was in very early development meaning that it was no where near complete so combat would be slow and many features were missed out! Also as many of the abilities that were available during the trailer were just the basic ones the chars coudn't do huge amounts of Damage. I remember that n MEO online you could be evil but since when could you be a mage, FYI there are no mages in middle-earth only wizards, and at that they were five demi-gods given the powers and sent to middle-earth. So ofcourse you cant play a wizard. As for PVP thegame will have it, the reason they didnt want to make it Good V evil factions PVPing because if you read the books or atleast saw the movies you would see that the good guys won the war of the ring meaning it would be quite imbalanced as turbine wouldnt want to contradict the lore so thebadguys would constantly have to lose.
Since then we have been told combat has been sped up to a normal pace and is supposedly fine now.
And where did you get the statement turbine are bad at making MMO's Asherons Call is supposedl a great game and DDO has a huge fanbase following it. People seem to think DDO is bad, but it isnt for those who like D&D the reason there was a lack of solo play is because it was meant to be all abut group play just like the real D&D, so ok it might not be any regular MMO players ideal game but to many intrested iin D&D and to others aswell, they think its a great game.
Basically your opinion is just opinion and not fact you therefore cant say this game will fail, as you dont know that..The game is growing very popular with about 150,000 signed up for the US betaand about 100,000 signed up for the EU one.
Exactly - remember its not all about PvP. Many people only like PvE - if the environment gives you room for decent PvP thats ok but with Middleearth you have to stick to Tolkien's way of seeing things - that means thate there we're only very few if any ogre mages...
So don't play it, go play WoW
If LotR is a reasonably fun game, with sufficient content and (especially) brings middle-earth alive for the player, it wil be a big hit. Not WoW big, but far and away big enough to keep going and make them plenty of money. You people who dont like Tolkien and just want another mmorpg, dont seem to have a good feel for how many Tolkien fans would like the play a game like this.
It could be the first mmorpg where the 'world' is the focus - they quests, the locations, the NPCs - rather than the loot or the raids. SWG had that chance, but blew it - SWG felt nothing like Star Wars.
Elladan - ESO (AD)
Camring - SWTOR (Ebon Hawk)
Eol & Justinian - Rift (Faeblight)
Ceol and Duri - LotRO (Landroval)
Kili - WoW
Eol - Lineage 2
Camring - SWG
Justinian (Nimue), Camring - DAoC
I was in the last closed beta that ended on the 14th and i realize this game is far from release, but i have to say the gameplay is boring and the way the avatars look is terrible... just my 2 cents.
Well, we'll just have to wait and see then won't we? I think that the Gameplay trailers looked promising because they were from an earlier development stage and what we see there has probably been improved a lot since then.
I would hoghly doubt, that you were in the closed beta..seeing that they've just started with the Alpha...just my two cents on that.
As for Avatars. All I'm hoping for is, that there is a big diversity(spelling?) and that we'll only rarely see two avatars which look alike.
As for Turbine being bad at making MMO's, I think DDO is a lot of fun. I say that's a good MMO.
No PVP
No evil characters
No Wizards
only 4 races
This game might be fun if they added evil char's and PVP ... it'd be a lot more fun if they added wizards
There are no evil characters because it is based around the lord of the rigns which is all about good triumphing over evil, and evil loses and most evil characters didnt get up to much, just served there master and in the end they lose.
There are no wizards because magic and wizards were scarce in middle-earth, to put it simply there were only 5 and that was it, they 5 were not human, they were sort of demi-gods given there powers and put on middle-earth by the valar. Therefore it would be a HUGE lore-breaker if you saw 1000's of wizards running around, they were also very powerful and woudl therefore be imbalanced.
There are only 4 races because you play as the free peoples of middle-earth, hobbits, elves, dwarfs and the race of men there arent any other races that coudl be used that were allied witht he free peopels. The game offers huge character customisation and even allows you to say what region your character is from giving them different things to customize, e.g men from rohan tend to have blonde heair and therefore will ahve more blond colours in the pallet for hair colour.
THerefore i feel this game wont be bac, and wont be fun, sure it might not have a huge goodV evil PVP system but if thats what your after then im sure something like Warhammer:Age of rekoning is for you.
Thank god Turbine has the guts to stand up to make this work. Too bad some don't have the fortitude to see it through, to see if it will work or not. Heck, to even give it a chance.
This isn't supposed to be WoW: Middle Earth version. This is going to be a game that is for Middle Earth, to the lore itself. Which, incidentally, was considered one of the greatest works of fiction of the 20th century. Gee, a STORY? That's something that people have been SCREAMING for in the world of MMO's. A good story.
So don't play it, go play WoW
Nice!
Good another lamer away, im looking forward to actually getting a mmo that doesnt have PVP. so the main problems with PVP can be excluded when we log in.
who wants to play LOTRO with these comments flying around...
"i pwned you" says ipwnedyoutoogood
or exploiting known bugs in game to never lose. or cheating other players out of items, goods and so forth.
I have to say that Turbine is taking a risk here... and I like it!
LoTRO, should it live up to its' promise, will turn MMO convention on its' head -- just the distinctive magic system alone has got people talking... good or bad, it's gotten a lot of attention.
That being said, LoTRO will probably not be for everyone -- and the fact that Turbine is putting 'what sells MMOs' on the wayside and focusing on making the game work in conjunction with one of the largest bodies of fantasy lore in the 20th Century (and no, this isn't based on the movies, this game is based on the Books) surprised the heck outta me... and thrilled me to no end.
If you want blast 'em magics and the whole "l33t-pwn" experience, don't expect to find it here. There are plenty of other MMOs out there **cough cough WOW that's a bad cough** where you can get your "l33t" on to your heart's content. By all means, though, give LoTRO a chance. When it releases, c'mon in and pull up a chair at the Prancing Pony, the Green Dragon or the Forsaken Inn (just watch your back if you're there!). However, you'd best behave yourself and expect that if you go around yelling "i pwned urealgoodn00b!", you'll richly deserve the responses you get...
I don't think LOTRO is meant to be a FPS or a pure combat game, so if thats what you're looking for, there are tons of things out now and on the horizon for you.
Alot of people are looking for gameworld, and story and immersion, and if that interests you, then LOTRO promises to be just the thing, methinks.
You should read the Dev Diaries on their official site for more information: http://lotro.turbine.com/index.php?page_id=1
