That is not a rhetorical question. I would really like people to answer.
I'm not playing an MMO currently, unless you count playing DDO once a month.
I've never played WOW, so I have no ax to grind, nor am I speaking in favor of playing another game or not playing Vanguard: I really don't know what is so important about this game.
Everyone seems to be waiting for it, and people call it a "WOW-killer." How would anybody know that? Blizzard didn't even know that WOW was going to be WOW. That sounds like a lot of hype based on nothing. It's like a huge summer blockbuster movie that spends $20 million advertising the movie. It might be good, or it might not, but the ads always make it sound great.
It may turn out to be the greatest game ever, I have no idea. I'm just not sure how anybody else would, either (unless they're in beta).
Personally, if I was picking something "blind" I'd pick Conan over Vanguard, but that is based on the Mature rating and statements that the game will never be politically correct...it's Robert E Howard's world. I don't need tons of gore, but I'm tired of games trying to get a bunch of 13 year olds to play and going for a Teen rating.
Well, I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

No one can say whether or not Vanguard will be any good. While I am a fan of Vanguard and its design I have a lot of doubts about this game. My hunch is it will fall far short of expectations like almost every mmorpg ever released. IMHO there are only about 5-6 games in development with a budget (in excess of $50 millon) big enough to make a quality game with a good amount of content. Vanguard is one of those games. If you want a list of why I am excited about Vanguard look at this post. The discussion in that that thread gets the question your asking of why people are excited about Vanguard. But again I agree with you it is much betetr to have doubt as most of these games are long shots to be the kind of high quality, well done and polished game we are all looking for. http://www.vanguardsoh.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1368398&postcount=7

In regards to Conan I have great respect for Funcom and I think AO is a wonderful game, but at least IMHO Conan will have the worst community of any game ever released. They seem to be targetting the worst of the 18-25 year old kiddies that ruin many games. By having a M rating, blood and gore, decapitations and PvP they are almost guaranteed to attract the worst of the kiddie community to AOC. While this may or may not be be highly successful in terms of sales its not the type of people you want to build a mature community. I hope I am wrong about Conan.
The thing about Conan is, although it is attracting those people, I'm not sure that's not their goal. Their goal is to find a niche of some sort, definitely. Maybe that will be it. I'm not sure the PvP will be childish enough for the type of people you are describing, though.
I didn't care much about the game one way or the other until I read their FAQ about mature rating (etc) and then their press releases or dev journals or whatever they are called. Where they go through class by class. The magic system will either be a huge success or a crushing failure. I like the city elements, the crafting sounds okay.
I could care less about decapitations, which is why you might be right: I may end up loving the game and hating the players.
If I even buy it.
Heh, that sounds like many peopes experience with WoW. I agree with you there is a lot to be excited about Conan. The community thing scares me quite a bit but I am sure I will buy it and like most games and despite my redujices I will find lots of things about it I like.
One good thing I think has happened because of WoW is games will be much more polished at release than prior to WoW. Gamers expect a lot more at release now thanks to WoW. Brad McQuaid made a very long post about this not long ago describing how polished and well done he thought WoW was and how he thinks it will force developers to release much better products with much mroe content and polish than in the past. If anything the failure of EQ2 and DDO is evidence of this change in gamers tolerance levels of poorly released products. This might explain a lot as to why Sigil has been so meticoulous and thorough with their beta and as to why their beta will most likely last close to two full years.
Best thing Sigil ever did was partner with SOE -- because of the furor it caused.
In the entertainment business there is a saying, "There is no such thing as bad publicity."
The really humorous part is that all the SOE hate-bois WILL be buying Vanguard and slinking back quietly to play it.

yep
ROFL! That was funny, no really... it was.
The "Big deal" with Vanguard is its the only mmorpg thats NOT gunna follow the current trend of "Easy mode"( WoW, Current EQ, Current Daoc, Current everything) its going to bring new features to the table but ALSO stay with the original mmorpg roots as in death penalties, CR's, no instances, little to no instant travel crap, its basically going to bring back the challenge we once had 6 years ago.. thats the Big deal imo.
What's the big deal with Vanguard? It looks cool and they tell me exactly what I want to hear.... I really don't know/care what makes it appealing to the masses.
I'm looking forward to Vanguard because, after reading FAQ and studying up on it through forums and other such things, it seems to have the things that i enjoy most about the MMORPGs i have played while removing most of the things i don't like about MMORPGs.
and thats why i'm looking forward to palying it over the other MMORPGs.
Current MMO of interest: Vanguard: Saga of Heroes
MMO background: EQ, UO, AO, SWG, PS, EQ2, L2,EQoA, WoW, WWIIO, and AC2
Look, only by reading the FAQ you get interested in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, I came from EQ and at first I didn't know was the same original designer of EQ doing Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, I have see some screenshots from Beta 0 to teh current beta and the progress they made from beta 0 to the current beta is amazing, I was talking with a friend from EQ old School, who told me that Diplomacy have been improved, which was far as I know the weakest point of this game. I can say that it will be really good, those guys are coming with a tweaked vision of the game they developed for when they were part of SOE and learning from the best of 2nd gen games like: WOW, EQ2, L2 and improving it, just like wow improved the aspects of 1st gen games and also coming with a diplomacy system, this is really freedom, if you want to solo you have 20% of the content to do it, if you want to group then 60%, if you want to raid like me 20%, iin the other hand if you want to do crafting then you can do it, if that don't make you happy then you can help your city or any other cities with diplomacy or maybe to distroy them? We already saw something similar with the codain ring event in The Great Divide (EQ) which was a war between Dwarfs and Giants.
Vanguard in my humble opinion can for sure, sell more copies than world of warcraft, but never fast as world of warcraft, it will take time, people will be spreading the voice as they join vanguard.

*shrug* i've been trying to read up and get excited on this game, but i always run into dead of ends of "Thats it?"
I extremely doubt vanguard will come close to wows numbers, in any way shape or form, over any given amount of time(with the exception of some sort of attack on blizzard that will bring about the end of wow).
The reason is wow not only got the mmorpg fans into it(somewhat), but it also attracted alot of people who werent mmorpg players previously. Vanguard on the other hand waves about a real oldschool mmorpg fan flag. People who have been looking for something similar will go it. But most of the players of wow, or people who have played/liked wow will not be interested in vanguard for the same reasons why they like/d wow.
Vanguards target fanbase is conisderably smaller then wows. And thats not counting the amount of people in the targeted audience who will just simply not like the game.
Vanguard will be a success don't get me wrong. It most likely won't flop likie AA, etc. But its not going to be the next big top game on the market.
I don't know if it really IS such a big deal, it's just that with the whole "SOE" thing came up, it really caused a ruckus.
Everybody will NOT like this game (nevermind love it).
But a lot of people are going to give it a chance and hope it floats their boat. I don't think people will really be able to evaluate this game properly till the beginning of Beta 4 when the NDA drops.
Then you will probably be able to tell whether you think it's a "big deal" or not.

The best thing you can do, buddy, is to just ignore the critics. If you hadn't, EQ probably never would have been made. I'm sure you already know this, but I just thought I'd try to give some positive feedback. It's so easy to be a sideline quarterback and point out everything about a game that "sucks", but you're doing something that they aren't; you're making it, they're just criticizing it. Nobody really knows how good this game is going to be until it is actually released. So keep pressing on and let time be the judge. I, for one, am rooting for you.
Cheers
good post, i agree totally. anyone who actually thinks that vanguard will have a subscriber base anywhere near what wow has is kidding themselves.
but at the same time, i believe it will have enough subscribers to keep the game going for a long time. i also believe if they have a decent launch and people like the game (genially) that the subscriber base will exceed that of witch sigil is aimed for.

There isn't enough room for two WOW-sized MMORPG's on the market. And frankly, I'd rather not have a majority of the people that played WOW in this game. They definately don't need that to be very successful.
And to the guy that said he was left saying "that's all?" after reading the FAQ...I can't imagein what FAQ you were reading. This game has more depth, choices, and ambition than any game I've read about. If they achieve half of what they are attempting, this game will be incredibly well worth the price.
However, they still have a lot to do...but fortunatley, a lot of time to do it. I'll hold out opinion until we know more, but from what we know...I'm intrigued.
people drove a VW Beetle because they could afford one and it was cost
effective or they simply thought it was cute. Anyone who plays one of
the major MMOs can afford to play WoW. Maybe when people say
"greatest" they really mean "most popular." Declaring something to be
the greatest, most fun, most interesting is pretty subjective. I'm
sure it changes from person to person. Even if you take an opinion
poll, it only proves that the item is the most popular among those
asked.
I gave up a bajillion years ago trying to figure out why people say the
thingies they say. It doesn't get me anywhere and it's just asking for
a headache!
Best off thinking of WoW as basic D&D (as it was, with the basic set etc), and VG as AD&D.
WoW is good because;
VG won't be a 'WoW killer', and it dosent have to be... There is a lot of profit to be had out there for a MMORPG with one fith of WoW's player base and certainly enough room in the market for a more adult game like Vangaurd. The truth is it will only fail or succeed on it's own terms, according to it's own standards.
So far, I am loving what I see
Ive probably said this 10 times already on mmorpg.com.. No game will ever beat the player base of WoW due to the huge amount of money they spent on marketing the shit. No other mmorpg has ever even spent 1/10th of that amount into marketing.
Why do u think theres so much first timer mmorpgers in WoW? Becose its the first mmorpg they ever heard of thats why..
