R.I.P Pluto

That's right. The 9th planet in our solar system. Our outer edge. Has been degraded. It's now nothing more than a piece of rock. The new definition that all "things" that might be a planet will be judged by:

"a celestial body that is in orbit around the sun, has sufficient mass
for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a
... nearly round shape, and has cleared the neighborhood around its
orbit."

So it's time to rewrite the school books. Our solar system now only has 8 planets, not 9.

about time. Pluto is just one of over 800 known  Kuiper belt objects.  It shouldn't recieve any special attention as far as I'm concerned.

I hope it hears it about this, slams into jupiter causing it to ignite the gases that makes a sun, therefore turns jupiter into a sun, and then cooks us up. Or it could just slam into earth.

Plutonian objects:  Unite!  Merge together and your combined materia should be enough to form SEVERAL true planets!

Anyhow, we can no longer use the "My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nine Pies"-mnemonic to remember the names of the planets.  Therefore I suggest that we all memorize a new one.  Here is my suggestion:
"Millions of Ventriloquists Eventually Ministered Joseph Stalin's Unknown Nomenclature" - it's easy to remember, and it makes sense!

Oh, and when are those lazy gits gonna decide what to name our precious 2003 UB313!?

It was put into the same category as Pluto, Dwarf Planet (I think that's what they call them now.) Ceres was also put into this group.

I thought Charon went round Pluto and Pluto went round the sun :S That would still make Pluto a Planet because it's round.

Pluto is the most important celestial body in our solar system. Don't doubt Siouxsie.

last week the advisory body proposed a sensible solution to this question.of course the majority of astronomers would be expected to vote against that solution, they are humans after all.

the advisory board suggested that a planet must

    a) orbit a star
    b) be large enough to be condensed by it's own gravitational forces into a sphere(~800k diameter minimum)

simple and elegant..not good enough for the eggheaded, hotel expenses paid for, nothin better to do,planet vote having sky watchers

expect several more votes over the coming years, with educational volume publishers the only winners

This just in, pluto sues Astronomy society for its unfair demotion, more as the sotry developes. Oddly enough I wrote a report on pluto n the 5th grade, a very fun "Travel Brochure" type report.

Oh well, pluto's validity as a planet has been debated since its discovery, this was very likely to happen.

I think it's the objective of your past self to make you cringe.

I'm aware of its status as a dwarf planet, but there's still no name for it.  Go, Persephone!
