Is anyone here any good at physics?

Yeah, so i'm having trouble with these problems, and it is an online course(i don't know why the teacher has us do it online so don't ask) and it is due in roughly 2 hours, so I would appreciate any help whatsoever.  Ok, here is the question:

A came sets out to cross the desrt, which is 23.6 km wide in the north-south direction.  The camel walks at the uniform speed of 3.63 km/hr along a straight line in the direction of 58.1 degrees north of east.  How long will it take the camel to cross the desrt? answer in units of hr.

Sorry it is kinda rough, but i did it in like a minute...

I'm thinking I have to find the hypotinuse and multiply it by the velocity, but it keeps coming up as wrong

so to all the nerds out that that can help me, i salute you

    Ah man I'm sorry.
I took Physics my senior year in highschool and I just graduated in June, but once I stop learning about something I totally forget about it.
If I had my notes, I could probably do it.

It came up incorrect :(  oh well, physics = gay

    thanks for trying.

    really? wtf was it?

It wont tell me untill tommarrow :(  did it have anything after the .07?  It might have counted it incorrect because it was off by 1%

First you must figure out the distance that the beast needs to travel:

You are given the y component of a right triangle; you can find the hypotenuse simply by finding the

cos of the interior angle of the triangle (which is y/r given our theta) and multiplying it's inverse by y:

To find the angle that the hypotenuse makes with the vertical distance: 90 - 58.1 = 31.9

Now that is the angle between the hypotenuse and y.

We must now find the ratio of y to the hypotenus which is cos(31.9)

              Inverting this: 1/cos(31.9) = r/y

              Now to find r: r = (r/y)*y = y/cos(31.9) = d

Now divide d by the velocity of the camel to determine how long it will take:

              t = d/v  = d/3.63 <hrs>

sec let me draw a dilly-o and i'll post it to show you how i did it.
  • NeptusNeptus Member UncommonPosts: 988

    Yeah It would....
So you can't try again? That really sucks...., I was working it out in my head for a while. Maybe my friend can help he got a better grade than me in that class.

Calculated answer from previous derivation: 7.6579 ~= 7.66

I see exactly what you're talking about, yet it is still saying that it is wrong :/

oh well, screw it, i'll just ask my teacher tommarrow.  I can afford a 0.

    Well, thanks.

Xexima, wait... I misread your diagram earlier lol.. I took the 58.1 for 38.1

    try 7.66

w00t now that is 1 out of 26 answers, and i got it at the exact last second :P

so that means my grade for the assignment rests at a 2.99 (because it takes off for each try)

    Thanx

wait.. so who got it right lol ? Me or Haz ?

In either case, I'm glad you got it.

yours moo, i saw it at like 11:59 and my assignment is due at 12 :P

  • hazmatshazmats Member Posts: 1,081
btw, a lot of classes nowadays have all the questions online somewhere.  Just type part of one of the questions in google and usually the whole assignment is right before your eyes.  Yea it's kinda cheating but google is just that powerful.
  • XeximaXexima Member UncommonPosts: 2,698
I would, but they are randomly generated for each assignment .  oh yeah, the teacher is letting all of us re do this assignment because about 90% of the class failed it...

Isn't that more a trigonometry problem?

Aweee I just saw it... I love physics :(

For your next assignment post it aswell so we can help :D

And technically that isn't really physics.. .This question was trig... i guess you can say it's physics because of the velocity... Anyways.... It's pre-calculus :D:D:D

Yeah i know that it is more of a triganomotry problem, it was just for my physics class and i wasnt thinking strait at the time ( not that i do most of the time...).  And i'm doing the same thing in pre cal too... fun stuff

I'll post more up here later if i'm having trouble
