Yep thats right, done over and dead. The days of challenge.. the days of hardcore pvp, the days of a CLOSE and respectable community seem to have died right around the year of 2002. Back in the good old days of EQ (pre-lucin) there was somthing, back when UO was REAL, the first 6 months of DAOC's release.. when you wouldent see somone lvl to 50 in 4 days, back when people had REAL reputations on each server.. and everyone pretty much knew each other. Those days are fucking dead and its a shame, what do we have thats planning to bring them back? Vanguard? Possibly.. Conan? Fuck no, LotR?, probably not, Darkfall? Vaporware, well what about some of the indy mmorpgs like Adellion, trials of ascension, and the chronicle? Maybe if they ever release in the next 10 years. Yep its a sad sad genre now.. everythings going to soft and the community has shit the shitter.

And yet the games just keep on getting better.
I guess the "good old days" were really crap.
Pretty much what I thought. Sounds like the OP should take a break from MMORPG's for a while, and await some of the promising betas to release. I've sort of done that by getting into simpler things like Maple,MUGEN and ZDaemon.
The good old days were partially good because of lack of choice anyway.
Haha, I actually do this, quite often...and I'm what most people call a carebear! Whiners.

More choice. Back in the day there were less choices, and it was all new (more or less) - newness = interest. Now with all the choices around there is less interest and less to suit ones needs. I've played just about every free trial I can find and have yet to find a single game that will hold my interest for more then a few days. There's just nothing inovative anymore.
It's just like the video game crash of 84 (Back in MY day). Lots of crap titles and a lack of quality. The quality was there when it all started but towards the end, it well it all just sucked. I mean who the hell wants to play a game about Kool Aid?
Anyway as always history repeats itself.
As for PVP... Well that topic is really getting old already. I understand that PVP is a style of play, and that those needs should be met; in fact I totally agree - but seriously, bitching about it over and over again is doing nothing but making people sick and tired of hearing about it. The only thing your complaints have done for say.. UO as one example is make it so the rest of us get nerfed.
So all in all the only thing left to do is wait for the next big thing to roll along. Till then...
MMO's have somewhat degenerated to deliver gameplay to the masses, and that being ever so apparent in hits like World of Warcraft, where when compared to Everquest, literally HAND the players everything and when the slightest confusion is made for the player, the devs patch in "handrails" to keep the customers "in it for the reward". But still, if you can't find an MMO today out of the many available then please, please quit and give yourself some time to figure out what game you really wanna play.
MMO didn't degenerate: It's all the contrary.
But what you describe is what millions of new user live every day when they discover a new MMO for the first time. It's like your first shot of drugs: The first feeling is always the best. Then you spend your whole life trying to get it again, but it will never happen...
You just need a break. A loooong break...
What deserves to be done, deserves to be "well" done...
So don't play WoW. Play one of the many niche games that delivery highly tailored concepts. Incidentally, in the "old days" you didn't have the diversity of choice you have today. At the approximate time period the OP mentions you had the choice of UO, EQ, AC, AO, and DAoC. That's it. Didn't like what they had to offer? Too bad.
It's better be hated for who you are, than loved for who you aren't.
MMORPG's are more popular today with the general gaming community. I think because of that, they are not as popular with the core MMO players.
But no, I do not agree with the idea that MMO's are not as good as they where in the past. They are different. Try EQ today and see how you like it. Try UO today and see how you like it. In a few more years you will be able to say the same thing to WoW. New games will come and the genre will evolve some more. Everyone will remember the good old days when when WoW was king.
I have my fondest MMO memories of AC back in the day when there where only 3 MMO's on the market (EQ, AC and UO) I recently went back (this winter) Word of advice, leave your fond memories of old games alone lol don't act on it. You will see the game through different eyes.

I consider myself a nerd/geek but the doinks in that video have just raised the bar. They make guys like me look... cool.
Sorry, that is simply impossible Valium
also I knew some people, online only, who were into that doiny stuff. Unlike you they were ex-marines who were simply into medieval combat. If your skinny ass, or my fat ass for that matter, took a shot to the shield from one of them our arms would get broken.
First grow enough muscle to put on a full set of armor that weighs, probly more than you, and be able to run with that on and not fall over then you can make fun of these clowns lol.

No lie, back in the day when I was in the Army I got stuck carrying the old M-60 w/ammo, had a backpack with everything I owned in the fiels/sleeping bag, PVG's all my other gear, protective mask, Kelvar helmet and body armor......and had to run around in the woods in 90-100 heat and live in that for weeks.
Its was no fun lugging around all that crap all the time.
