If they go fee based the game will die, and they know it. The only thing keeping it even remotely afloat now is the add revenue they get from doing in-game adds.
I don't ever see them going back to 100% fee based. They'd lose 90% of their playerbase overnight. Then their paying players, because they'd have nobody to play with any longer, would de-sub because they were 'bored playing alone'.

and you got this revolutionary info from? In case you missed the newsflash, its a 60-40% ratio not 90-10, and nearly a fifth of all "froobs" (that do not cancel in the first two weeks) end up buying the expansions after about 6 months. The in game ads are giving them money, but its a bonus, in fact, on top of the regular subscription, that bonus has been enough to begin the development of three, count them, three new games. Age of Conan, Dreamfall, and The World Online. The money for those came off of the revenue made in AO. That does not remotely smack of it drowning out.
EDIT: sorry, missed an important addendum to my statement

i gues it will stay free forever but after some time u will have to buy the game coz the ppl who pay have more benefits like shadow levels and perks...so it`s free olny to get u to like it and then realyse that if u don`t pay u`ll get u`r ass woped big time by those who pay

That would be true, if pvp was a big part of the game. As it is, theres little disadvantage being a free player aside from less content.

Its pseudo-free. You *can* enjoy the free based content but if you like levelling fast, forget it. Example: You get 700 xp per kill in the free area and about 2500 xp per kill in the expansions.... Some people say they enjoy the free content with no commitments, I met a guy that was level 110 and loving it but it took him 6 months to do that (which is usually a weeks work in the expansions).

I would think it will stay with the free basic as long as the game is around. Its a good option with add revenue for them. A win/win situation. On top of that it also serves as an awesome trial package so a lot of people do upgrade and get the expansions as they see worth it. So it serves a great purpose of a trial. Just my 2 cents.
