    1. Blaster v scrapper

Entirely a matter of what appeals to you. Scrapper is like your typical melee warrior, and blasters are like mages who stand back and nuke. If you buy the game, level a scrapper and blaster to level 6-10 (which doesn't take very long) and you'll know which you'd rather play.

    2. CoH and CoV are played on the same servers. If you buy both games, you pay the same monthly subscription, can play both games and have a few more character slots per server.

I haven't played for a while, but I don't believe you have to own both games to access the pvp areas.

    3. Costume changing

Oh hell yes, and it was one of my favourite features of the game. Changing your costume does cost you influence (game money) and you probably won't be able to afford to do this, or reach the costume shop, until your mid-to-late teens. By the time you're in your 30s or 40s, the cost of occassional costume changes is easily affordable.

NOTE: All costume options won't be available to you when you start the game. As you level, new options become available in the shops. Also at level 20 you can pick up a mission to access capes, and at 30 a mission to access auras.

I think you should take a look at this

    http://sherksilver.coldfront.net/

It's a character planner. What you see when you run the program you can download there is exactly what you'll see when advancing levels in CoH.

Basically every even numbered level for the first thirty levels you get to choose an extra power, and every odd numbered level you can choose 2 enhancement slots. The pattern changes slightly post level 30.

Each enhancement slot allows you to install an enhancement for that power giving you eg. greater accuracy or damage with that power. Your power choices and slot assignments on levelling up are permanent (though you can do a mission that allows you to respec all your powers and slots). But once you've assigned slots to a power, the enhancements you put in those slots can be changed whenever you like.

For example, if you play an ice blaster at level 2 you might pick up the ice blast power and at level 3 you could add 2 slots to that power. Since each power comes with a minimum of one slot, you now have 3 slots in ice blast. You could slot all 3 with damage enhancers, and find that you're doing more damage when you hit, but you're missing too much so you could change it to 1 accuracy and 2 damage. Maybe you're still missing too much, so you might try 2 accuracy and 1 damage.

If you play and enjoy the game and decide to stay, do a little research on character builds. Some folk have figured out the exact numeric effect of different enhancements and have written some good guides. Just be sure to note which version of CoH the guide is written for - the game changes so much from patch to patch that some of the older guides could lead you to make bad choices.
