SoR good for a soloer?

BlakesrealmBlakesrealm Member UncommonPosts: 45
Hello all -

I admit I love soloing in online games, not exclusively of course -- especially after I find a good guild -- but I do enjoy it. That said, how viable is SoR for soloers? And if it is indeed a viable game, any suggestions on how to focus the character?

I admit one thing that does rub me the wrong way is that there aren't really item drops, but that's something I can get used to especially if I can hook up with a good guild and have some direction in game.

Any other advice would be appreciated as well.

having no item drops is pretty much the foundation of SoR, it encourages community and friendship and interaction. Solo is great as a digger or crafter, possible for fighers and mages but imo an awful lot more fun in a group.

Thanks for the comments. I don't think that, in the long run, the no drops thing will bother me much -- especially once I get into the ebb and flow of the game. I was more just stating my prefence at the moment really.

Can anyone point me to a good newbie starter faq or guide? One that might guide me as to what to do my first few hours in game, just to get my feet under me? Also are there any newbie friendly guilds to be had?

Oh and I did download the manual and comic starter guide from the main site, so I'm going to look them over today or tomorrow.

I don't know of any good guides to point you too but I only started a while back myself and didn't look around too much. The Starting Island has missions that are designed to help you learn about the different skill trees. Ryzom does has a steep learning curve but if you don't let that bother you and relax and go through the quests you'll get the hang of it. Also when you have questions about how things work ask on the universe chat channel (it was created for people to ask questions on). Useally you'll get answers quickly from a few people.

All of them, pretty much. :) Choice of guild then depends on what faction you want to join and what level of RP you want.

Ironically the website has fairly good information, in a fairly copious amount. =P

I mostly solo in Ryzom... got a nice set of Medium-weight gear, and it's serverd me well for 80 levels in melee and magic so far. If you're the type who wants to grind up levels fast, solo isn't that great. For sheer speed and less downtime, groups are the way to go.

But if you just wanna leisurely hunt, and don't mind that it's slower to level that way, yes, solo is perfectly possible. I'd recommend joining a guild with crafters who can supply you with high-quality gear and jewels, as those will be a big help. Its nice to have skilled crafters close at hand, unless of course you want to make your own gear.

I myself was never much of a crafter, however. :)

Wow thanks for all the great links Katriell, I really appreciate that!

I played around in game a bit last night, as Panaman, and so far it's interesting. I'll probably end up restarting a new character, as I was all over the place with my points and what I did. I'll probably end up focusing on just being a Warrior with minor (or maybe good, who knows) harvesting skills and just a bit of magic.

Sounds pretty much exactly how I plan to play. I really am not going to bother crafting anything, at least I doubt that I will. We'll see I guess. I know that I'm going to plan on focusing on fighting and magic, and maybe mess with the harvesting -- not sure if I want to bother with the whole thing, just maybe the bits off of the creatures I kill.

I think that Ryzom is mmorpg where all people doing whatever they want and when they want doing it. U can playing solo and in a group- and u get a lot of fun)) but i think in a group better and funny)

I have played SoR on and off for a long time now and my character is still not very high level at anything as I keep changing the skills I am levelling.  Anyways a comment, if you decide to concentrate on fighting then it is best to do enough magic to be able to replenish a healers SAP between fights.  Duoing is a very viable way of levelling and its much quicker if a figher can replenish the healers sap between fights.

As for Solo, I have soloed melee and elemental magic upto 100ish, after that it starts to get alot slower and its much easier in a team even if its a team of 2.  Getting into a team is simple in SoR people at all levels are happy to team and people will almost always have a skill in the right level range they can use.

That's one of the best things about this game. The Dragonblades do a sort of "Day out" every Sunday, and it's totally random who shows up every week... but because everyone's at a different point in their skills (this one has high sword but low axe skill... that one has low healing but high affliction, etc) we are always able to find a skill range so that everyone can participate, it's fun/challenging for everyone, and everyone gains XP and learns new skills.

Soloing is a fun and laid back way to learn the game. Just do the starting quests and forage away while keeping an eye on the chat. You get 5 character slots so you can mix and match to see how you want your main to evolve if you decide to go to the mainland.

Overall a very friendly community and willing to help and soloing can be fun.

I agree with the friendly community comment, everyone I have run into on Newbie island has been very helpful. So far I have my warrior at 23 fight and like 14 magic. I intend to make him a warrior and not a crafter/harvester at all. Maybe that'll change but for now that's where he's at.

Was thinking of trying a mage/crafter as an alt.

    You know whats funny?
That people, despite of being happy and all "Yeah that´s so cool" about Ryzom not being a "class based Game" and able to do everything they like, still think and act in "Classes".

You don´t need to make an alt to explore crafting and harvesting!!!
Just do it. It won´t hinder your "Main" beeing an expert Fighter/Mage or whatever. Only the time you investigate into crafting/prospecting will miss from his development.
But so does it if you play an "alt" that crafts. *LOL*
So, there isn´t any need to build another charakter, just to try out something else.
    Old habits die hard, eh?

Ryzom, we dare to be different.
    Do you dare to adapt?

Oh I totally get that. In this case, however, I'm trying to RP the Fighter/Mage as a purist. He doesn't dirty his hands, if you will, by digging around in the dirt for things. Anything he finds will be off of an opponent of his.

The other character is going to be more of a pure mage who is also a crafter/harvester. Just a little RP fun really.

Ahhh but he isn't finding anything off animal corpses, he's cutting them up to get the materials. That's getting his hands just as dirty as digging around in the ground

Not at the quartering stage he isn't. Killing them is getting his hands dirty with the blood of his enemies, quartering them he is nothing but a marketplace butcher. He's getting his hands dirty with 'menial' (taking it that his attitude towards diging makes him a Matis ) work.
