What do you recommend?
I am right now leaning towards... ugh... WoW.
Tried it once, when NGE was first announced, got angry because it seemed to be everything that was badly implimented as the CUNGE.
I'm taking a second look, because at least WoW does this stuff and it... works. Unlike SWG.
My last SWG account runs out in late Sept.

It is notable that on the MMORPGCHART site that SWG's decline happens as Eve rises faster and faster, I bet a LOT of SWG refugees, especially crafters/space fanatics moved there.
I love space but I never liked crafting.

I tried Saga of Ryzom for about two weeks, but couldn't bring myself to keep playing. It just felt...well..."clunky" is about the only word that comes to mind, at least compared to pre-CU SWG, World of Warcraft and EVE. It just didn't keep my interest. I played WoW for about a year after they destroyed Galaxies with the Combat Upgrade, but the repetitive grind and the swiftly plummeting IQs of other players finally cured me of any and all interest in it.
I am currently playing EVE, since it's the only decent science fiction-based MMO out there right now. It's a deep game (as deep as pre-CU SWG used to be, if not more so). And it is not only a sandbox game, but it is pretty much a free-for-all: 100% player-driven economy, you can be a pirate if you want, there are player bounties, they've added TEFs, etc. Yes, it lacks a ground game, and that's what caused me to leave it the first time, but now I've accepted that, and I'm trying to explore the other aspects of the game that I ignored before. I will be playing EVE until the duckling matures, Star Trek Online comes out, or some heretofore unheard-off SciFi MMO is released (and, no, I don't think I'll be playing Seed ).
Bear in mind, OP, that in all cases, your milage will very likely vary. What I (or others) find entertaining may bore you to tears. Do not simply buy a game without trying out the trial (and if it doesn't offer one, I wouldn't even bother with it).
Maybe I will go back to DDO, I beta tested it and still have an (inactive) founder account.
I'm thinking that I may do this:
1. Keep one SWG account alive basically so I can socialize and sometimes play with my guild. I love FOAD and the people in it.
2. get NWN2 and make it my main game until classic servers come.

Ahh but see, those games do not pretend to be somthing they are not. That is the best thing about it... you know what your getting, no lies, not near as broke and they are more of a success as they are.
Not like the NGE at all.

Winner of the worst MMOS goes to.... the NGE and SWG..!!! http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm?loadFeature=1034&bhcp=1
To clarify the first point though, it is very obvious when you load up WoW that you are playing a game, nothing more. And it's complete, well, as complete as MMOs get, anyway. But it's pretty polished, and it's fun, and it constantly reminds you it's just a game. SWG was much, MUCH more. SWG was not a game, it was a universe. Pre-CU needed help making it feel like a Star Wars universe, but it definitely felt like a separate universe. The NGE just feels like a very poorly constructed, buggy game. And compared to what it once was, it definitely feels like a kiddie game.

I feel the same way about SOE but honestly it seems like it's a TOTALLY different company in EQ2. I've encountered little to no bugs in that game plus they are putting out updates/enhancements on a very regular basis. Customer interaction is way better and they keep everyone informed of what they are doing. I MUCH prefer SWG to EQ2 (Sci-Fi vs. D&Dish) but as a whole, it's a very well done game.
If SWG classic comes out, I am most definately coming back to SWG.
(I have a level 50 Guardian and a level 41 Shadowknight in EQ2).

And their playerbases aren't rushing to the exits as if Gigli siddenly appeared on the screen.
If NGE is tic tac toe, those games are checkers or four-in-a-row. All simple, but with checkers there's a bit more complexity involved. At least with those games there's a possibilty of doing something more advanced. NGE has killed that possibilty long ago.
GAHHHHHH!!!! Attack of the Bennifer!
I just realized this is an interesting parallel to SWG. I mean, who would have imagined they could make a Star Wars game so bad that true fans run away screaming?
It's like having somebody as nice looking as Jennifer Lopez in a movie that flops as badly as Gigli did. How do these things happen? Did SOE produce Gigli too?

I don't really know why people pretend WoW is a bad game. I have found that if you play it with a good guild it is almost as entertaining as SWG in its heyday. Not quite, but almost. And it beats NGE hands down for complexity, polish and fun. The only thing it is missing is blasters and lightsabers and if I want those now I play Battlefront II for a few hours and call it good.
The only other choice is to reward SOE for their incompetence with my hard earned money. I would rather feed $15 each month to rats in an alley...and I would probably be just as entertained.
I know I discount WoW as a choice because of two reasons. That I HATE Elves and Dwarves being one reason, but the primary reason being a level system. I hate levels. A level 1 Pansy should be able to kill a level 4000 MegaOrc if the level 1 Pansy has a nuclear weapon and the MegaOrc is using a sword made from foam. An extreme example, but hopefully you get the picture. I do not like levels determining the outcome of fights. That is the simplicity I do not like. So I avoid level-based games altogether, not just WoW.
I also hear crafting is an afterthought in the game and a lot of people here like crafting. I love crafting as it was pre-CU for Weaponsmith or anytime for Shipwright.

J-Lo really has only two talents.
1. Her ass.
2. Her ability to go from being latin to black back to latin and so forth as the Top-40 charts dictate.
She's a mediocre actress at best and ditto as a singer. And she's pushing 40 now...
I realize I said I quit. I never said it was forever
Two things.
Firstly. J Lo is not a chore to look at. Bad actress? Definetly, but there's no denying she's easy on the eyes.
Secondly. I recently bit the bullet and bought a copy of WoW. I had huge reservations about it since people are always down on it on these forums. The only reason I bought it was out of guilt. You see, Just before the NGE I convinced a friend to join SWG, which he did. He pre-ordered ToOW and everything in his first week and was just getting into it when the NGE was announced. He went on test center... played the new game, and quit, feeling quite ripped off. I felt like a tool for talking him into wasting his money like that. Then he decided to try CoV, and he really liked it, so much that he bought a copy of the game and a timecard for me (since he could tell I was bummed about SWG, which I had quit Nov 15th). I played it for a bit, but quit when my card ran out since I became busy with work and couldn't justify subbing for a game I didn't really like. My friend got tired of CoV, and recently moved on to WoW. Purely out of guilt, I bought the game and started playing it. And big surprise, it's really fun!
No, it's nowhere near as cool as SWG pre-cu, but it works! It has an economy that is functional. There's plenty of stuff to do (at my lvl anyways), and there's always people around to help. Playing WoW for a few hours really puts into perspective how screwed SWG really is. I'd say give WoW a try and see how you like it.
Yes I do have qualms about swords and Orcs, as I'm a Sci-fi guy, but WoW will do for now... maybe until ST Online?

You couldn't smuggle but you would be able to shoot first.
Smuggler always did suck in SWG, the only remotely smuggler like stuff they could do (slicing, spice making) was taken by the NGE.
Even if I could play AS Han Solo, I still couldn't do it.
LOL Don't take that the wrong way , Dosen't mean I wasn't still bored in SWG . But atleast I had my space ship . And my droid , ANd my house . Nothing in WOW ever really felt like a true possesion.

Played WoW for less than 2 months--post NGE, and that included playing on several alts across about 3 or 4 servers. If the original (WoW) didn't appeal to me enough to keep playing for more than 2 months, why would I want a knock-off of it (NGE). Yes, I resubbed on SWG after playing WoW but it was for those few things SWG still has that WoW doesn't...and even those aren't enough to hold me in SWG any longer.
Edit: and I would love to find a game that compared to pre-CU. I tried SoR but my cursor moved too fast and other things didn't work about it on my comp.
