Horizons Sold to EI

The devs went suddenly silent the past few weeks, and we now get the news that the game has been sold! Betrayed by the devs who claimed they cared so much about us. Sneaky trick, all that good news about the expansion and world revamps, just to make us stay until you sold us off. What will happen to HZ now?

Screw you, for your shady acts and giving of false hopes, Tulga.

Link to the news is here.

If they had told us beforehand, and not just sprung "SURPRISE! You've just been sold!' on us after weeks of suspicious silence, I'd be a bit more positive. As it is, it was a shady act, which doesn't tend to inspire hope and belief.

The devs do (did) not own the game.  When AE was reorganized as Tulga, Chris Tulamello acted as the middle man, and a venture capital firm (too late to look up the name) in Boston provided the funding.  As a result, Tulga was theirs to sell.  They may have had full rights to sell at any time, or the developers may have missed a development or financial milestone. In any event, the VC firm (and this is why they are feared and hated) may have just cashed out.  They are not noted as a group for their long term views.

I am sure that this came as a complete surprise to the devs, who had worked their hearts out and turned things around remarkably; ironically, it made the enterprise worth selling.

As for the silence, I'm sure it was imposed.  Normally, some or all of the severance pay and benefits would be lost by unauthorized disclosure.

Due to the effect on share prices that news such as this carries it is illegal to talk of it before it happens. This is to prevent insider trading. The EA/Mythic sale was denied right up until it was confirmed for exactly the same reason.

You may now put away your little tin-foil hat.

it sounds like tulga games/AE have folded for the last time.  maybe they were forced to sell horizons to buy debts they owe.

the question is what will happened to the future of horizons. will EI create "Horizons 2" and license an advanced engine to get horizons graphics up to date with the latest games.  what will happen if EI were to close horizons three months from now so they could work and force on a much better version of horizons without feeling the need of charging customers for beta.

a new ownership now brings new questions for sure.

Have played: CoH, DDO EQ2, FFXI, L2, HZ, SoR, and WW2 online

EI is a internet hosting company not an MMO dev. They did the same thing when they acquired Savage Eden. There has been no real work done of that game since. Just a whack load of events but no advancement or fixes in coding.

I wouldn't expect any better from them with horizons

that means no expansion and what you have now is what you have from now on. Unless they hire an actual MMO dev team of course...

to me it never really was a bad mmorpg but it was average at best.

the hype over the game over the years and the myth of it raised the bar too high for horizons.

When it went live it still had a lot of believers and sadly the reality was totally different.

I think fair to say over the year leading to release the developers tried to tell people it will not be like the original vision but the myth was so strong not many really listened.

Had it come out without the pre hype or old ideas been known i think it may have done the 50k+ subs easy and held it .

It has a very good crafting system that can sell it well for instance.

I wasn't in the Beta, but I was there the first day the game came out.  I cringe at all these horror stories that are happening years after the game has been out.

Hehe, I was in Beta and have heard all the promises as well as the lies. I left beta early due to the fact my services were no longer needed they were rushing the game out after all the beta testers told them the game was not ready for release.

So, knowing the fact the game was still a beta on release I left for an undisclosed game. I told myself to let the game age so the bugs get fixed lol boy was I wrong. I came back a year ago after giving Horizons over two years to fix the game, well some of the bugs were fixed while others are still there from beta. The game finally seemed to turn the corner when the sale went down with EI. Now I do not believe the game will be developed by EI they simply do not have the resources, experience  or people to do any development let alone fix bugs.

I hope I am wrong, but I just can't shake the feeling I get when I read their posts and witness their actions.
