In terms of all the discussions about what is a good mmo and what not, or what ingredients it needs, there is one thing common to nearly all, and that is grind.
grind for xp, grind for money, grind for resources. they are time consuming, and often very boring.
still people do it. some love it. nevertheless many hate it and still play - peer pressure? maybe. some go then so far to use macros - which are often even allowed. i believe if it is so boring/time consuming to use a macro, then it is just badly done.
sure, a hardcore gamer could grind for all resources in a matter of a few hours it were easier/faster, but so does the casual player using simply macros.
bots are another problem, usally banned, but nevertheless used, especially in grind heavy mmos like the lineages, silkroad, but even the supposedly less heavy grind ones like wow are hit by special programms to help you level faster. if not enforced heavily, bots can ruin a game even.
finally the fact that you can buy leveling services/ingame money/items. not just the rich or casual player, even the impatient or lazy ones might do it.
Sure, you need some system to make a character progress and so on, but aren't there other ways?
I don't have a solution to this really, but the everlasting them of content might be one. sure, there is content in e.g. lineage 2 with quests, but if they are like "kill 100 of these....", then it is a very poor way to force you to group to make it go faster. And there we go again - faster - i.e. speed. even though many say "enjoy the game", still many want to advance fast, at least to some medium/advanced stage (the slow/casual players are too silent about this at least).
Skills per se might be another solution, but they are often dependent on how often u use a skill - and they can be programmed again by a macro.... In Eve u can train skills which takes up time, even offline. that has the advantage, that a hardcore player not necessarily can advance that much faster despite much online time. it is enough to log on, start the training, log off. no perfect, but interesting feature.
Sorry if I repeat here a bit of what has gone into the powerleveling service debate from recently, but I just felt like putting this down in a separete thread. Flame this, discuss this, ignore this, as you wish.

I agree. I think that accounts should be analized more thoroughly for bot usage. Although i must admit i have wanted to download a bot program for my WoW account to see how it is. But its not worth it to me to have my account banned forever.
