I agree with you Geckoman! Turbine's dedication to creating not only a great game, but one that follows in the greatest traditions of Tolkein's vision is very reassuring! It seems to me that a lot of people are simply driven by the frustration that they can't play yet - lol - which I think explains a significant portion of the ugly comments directed at both the developer and the project itself!

Provided that they do not fall into the pitfalls that some other developers have - that being rushing into launch before the game is ready - I have every confidence that LOTRO will be well worth waiting for!

I also wanted to comment on the condemnation of DDO, since I took an opportunity to put some more game time into that MMORPG this past week:

DDO is NOT your typical MMORPG. Anyone who went into DDO looking to find a replacement for their WoW addiction is going to have been sorely disappointed. The way that the gameplay is structured.. the way you level... the way you heal... the way you recover your spells... al of it is VERY different from most traditional MMORPGs. It is, however, a fairly good interpretation of the D&D rules... and for anyone looking for an online way to experience D&D again... DDO is a fine offering. Granted, I cannot comment overly on the depth of content in the long haul, but I think the game has a solid foundation to be what it was intended to be: D&D Online. I think that DDO provides a good example of what kind of unique qualities Turbine can bring to the MMO world when they choose to be dedicated to staying true to the original source.

For myself, DDO stands a a reason to have faith in Turbine, not to condemn them.

I had to smile.  Not *at* you mate, just in general.  If anything, I'm a little appreciative towards you.  I often hear that I sound "angry" in my posts, when in actuality, I'm anything but. (Although I do become a bit preturbed by the trollers).  It's just in my discussions with other individuals, I enjoy adult, informed and challenging discussions.  When I see something lacking, I'm not afraid to point it out.  Albeit, bluntly at times.

Maybe I need a little reminder to take a second or third look at my post to check the 'tone'.    So consider this a sincere 'thanks'.

    Athela:
Funny how people have bad experiences with companies and sort of hate
them forever.  I think this is especially strong in the mmorpg world
where you invest so much time in your character and the social group
you belong to and the world itself.  Its a dynamic that just isn't
    there in single player.

Dude, truer words were never spoken.

From what people saw of LotR online at PAX, the game was nowhere close to matching what people were expecting of it.

To put it bluntly, it sucked... bad.

I still play AC to this day, and I have to tell those who regret not playing it in the old days, you got nothing to lose by starting today. I have to second the opinion that it is the greatest mmorpg of all time.

AC2 was a mess of bugs and imbalance for the first year after release. However, when the Legions expansion pack was released, the game was actually greatly improved and much fun. I played it for a few months before it shut down. They really fixed almost all the bugs and made the game fun and balanced. They just couldn't get people to try it again, and they couldn't get any shelf space.

I played DDO beta, and it was really a pretty fun game. It just isn't worth the money.

So they messed up with AC2 because of the bugs and balance issues. The mostly learned their lesson with DDO and didn't release with many bugs and balance issues, but they didn't add enough content. Maybe they will learn their lesson again and make a game with enough content and low on bugs.

I've heard bad things about Turbine as well, but as a huge Tolkien fanboy I NEEEEED this to be done well.  I did not play AC 1 or 2, but understand the OP's sentiments about being once bitten twice shy with a company.  I will probably not play any SOE game because of the SWG massacre.

    /crosses fingers for a half-decent game

I've been having quite a bit of fun playing DDO... enough so that if those who disliked it didn't try LotRO I think I would be quite happy that they didn't show up.

    To dream, perhaps to be.
