It might not have been fair to say the Sabbath started Heavy Metal, but nor is it fair to give all of the credit to Steppenwolf. At least in my opinion there were a number of bands and artists that inspired and contributed to the development of HM.

I still think that Sabbath was one of the premier Metal bands of the day. Their first few albums were a departure from what other bands were playing at the time. I feel that heavy metal came into its own with bands like Judas Priest, Rush (their first couple of LPs) and Iron Maiden.
I shoot for the curve... anything above that is gravy.
