How's combat work in this game?

I haven't been paying much attention to city of heroes until recently. Suddenly it seems very interesting, go figure. Anyway, I couldn't find my answer in any of the FAQs I've seen. How does combat work in this game? Is it typical everyquest 'press auto-attack, watch yourself fight, occasionally press a special attack, sit down for awhile after the fight's over because you're hurt too badly, go get some pie, come back and repeat'? I really can't take anymore cookie cutter RPGs, I want combat to actually feel exciting.

From what I've been able to find out, combat will be a mix of real time and turn based. Once you target the MOB and move within range, you will have to press various hot keys to initiate attacks.

The enemies are also much smarter in CoH than they are in most other MMORPGs. If you ambush a group of 5 thugs and take out 4 of them, the 5th one will start running away. Enemies from the same group will help each other if they are near by and might attack other groups of NPCs if the NPCs are from a different gang. Another thing is that enemies will actually try to avoid your attacks. So if you create a wall of fire infront of you, the enemies will back away from it rather than blindly walking into it.

Keep in mind that this information might not be 100% correct because the game is still in beta and the beta testers are under the NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement), so the information about the actual gameplay is scarse at best.

yeah, i read on another site that it's gonna be a mix of combos and kinda dice based fighting.  So you'll have moves to pull of, various depending on what you press or have. After that it's back to good old D&D style scoring.  Not fully though, it's kinda like Star Wars Galaxies, you have a min and max damage threshold i think.

Also read that The Matrix Online has a very similar fighting system

As you go up in levels the combat changes. When you use a power you have to wait for that power to recharge before you can use it again. But while you are waiting for that power you can use another one. So if you have only 2 large powers, like you will at first level. You will be using the inate power to punch a fair bit. But as you go up in levels you get new powers you can use. So you will be trying to find combinations to use, and while you wont be "button mashing" you wont be pushing a button then sitting around either. I believe one of the demo players also mentioned that if you move around a little bit you decrease your chances of being hit. And yes the AI are supposedly a LOT smarter. If you face a MOB with mind affecting abilities, it will try to stun you, attack you once or twice, then run away and try to stun you again. They also realise if they are incredibly outmatched and will run away. Or try to at least. I do not believe it is.. "turn based" .. more real time with a touch of pre-made strategy. The developers of this game have said more than once that they want to action to be "Fast and Furious".

Thanks for the replies, I think I'll give this game a shot when it comes out.

While I'm posting, are there supposed to be any innate sorts of powers? Like a power that is always on, and doesn't need to be activated? I read some stuff about things like invulnerability, but it looked like most of those powers were short term activation powers.

Yes there are "always on" powers.  They are spread throughout the different power groups.

Many are always on defense buffs, to hit buffs, and the like.

Check out this site for more info on powers and how the game works: http://hometown.aol.com.au/Boxhead6177/Freelancer/MainIndex.htm

i really like the combat system of DAoC, and i was kinda hoping that this would be similar to it. enemy AI that actually works will be a breath of fresh air, might weed out some of the not-so-smart players...

LOL. Weed out the not so smart players.

Heck keep em in to make my char look smarter!! There's room for everyone in CoH!

I saw some of the gameplay in Dallas and I think PvP being gone won't be such a problem. Imagine you're walking/running/flying down a street and something steps into your path and starts smacking you down. MoBs also seem to have many of the same powers as heroes. I saw one mob knock a player's hero clear across the street.

Also, combat was pretty fast, not sure I would say there wasn't any button mashing going on, but maybe I don't understand what you mean by button mashing.

There's also a video on gamespot which, although old (E3 03), shows someone fighting some baddies.  I don't know if it has changed since then.
