I bought this game about a week ago and finally decided to give it a try today. I've played over 11 MMO's, so I know what to expect when it comes to game controls. This game totally caught me by suprise with its game controls and I really hate the. I've tried all the alternate key configurations, but all of them make you use the number pad on the right side of the keyboard.
I'm afraid if I can't figure out how to set the key configurations to WASD movement and the rest of the controls at least similar to other western style MMO's, I will have to quit this one before even getting started.
If you know how to do this, please let me know. I would love to try this game out, but not at the cost of the gameplay controls I am used to.
Thanks.

hit the - on the numpad and flip around and find the config button then flip through those and look under misc2(i think) for the compact keyboard setup. Thats what you want to use to move around using WASD and you can move the camera with the numpad or shift_arrow keys. You can reasign most of the basic key strokes under the compact option most use ctr+ or alt+
I could be wrong from your explanation but i sounds like you are telling him how to use the macro palletes?
Anyways I gave up on the keyboard use to navigate this game a couple years ago. If you think you are going to enjoy the game g buy a decent console type controller, it makes it much easier in my opinion.

Amen!
After years of being used to certain controls, it's very hard to get used to new ones...as they're completely unintuitive! I have quit games before because I simply could not learn their controls, though usually after a week or so, I'm an old pro at whatever wacky configuration they use.
For ffxi, I had to use the compact keyboard setup voodude posted about. I'm honestly still not a fan of the controls, but they're manageable.
Good luck
Yeah, I totally agree. I got into the game when a few peeps at work finally talked me into it (I was leary of the mmorpg thing and the associated monthly fees) and didn't have a game pad at the time, so I had no choice but use the keyboard at first. About a month later I got myself a decent USB controller and tried to switch and it was god awful. I ended up ditching the controller after 1 day because I couldn't do anything nearly as quickly as I did with a keyboard. With all the keyboard shortcuts there are, to me it was just easier (and much more flexible) using the keyboard.
Like other's have said, the compact keyboard option might work for you, but honestly I would give the full keyboard a fair chance before you throw the towel in. At first it's a little difficult, but you do get used to it, and after a little while it's second nature.
Good luck!
