Remember, you can't really criticize a movie until you see it yourself. Don't judge a movie on one person's opninion.
Becuase I was watching Street Fighter as a kid...I enjoyed it. I mean I can see why they didn't want to do the true Street Fighter. I mean Mortal Kombat would have been brutal if they did it true to form but it wasn't. and still was good.
Oh and Durahell unless I'm wrong... Silent Hill didn't end up with "some girl dreaming at the end", pretty sure she was in purgatory, and yer right, I'm not a "diehard SH or RE fan" but I'm pretty sure that was in one of the games too, as was everything else in the movie. I saw the movie with a "diehard SH fan" and he explained everything to me in long boring detail after we got out of the theatre .
The thing I don't understand is, why the heck do they have to make the storyline in the movie different from the original stories??
The original stories in the games were great. And the movies...just ruined them all. No respect for the original at all...
Resident Evil 2 movie took some parts directly off the Resident Evil 3 video game such as cops' cars appeared at street block and soldiers jumped off truck set up street blocks to battle the zombies(the moment how the cops' cars appeared was almost identical to the game)...but still the storyline is very very different from what it suppose to be.
Anyone knows why? Why the movie directors have such habit to change the original storyline? Do they get punished for having exactly the same storyline as original or they just think they are so smart and can make storyline better???

Because if they didn't the movies would be 20-50 hours long. Now I know of some people that'd be willing to sit at a movie theater for that long, but thats bedise the point.

This guy my dear people is a true game.
Thank you Infliction for an honest answer, you see i have grown up with Resident Evil and partially Silent Hill. Which means i know em like my backpocket, and these movies are not true to their legacy. So let me ask everyone from here on now who post this topic, are you a hardcore fan of RE or SH. The FF7 movie was actually quite OK, a load to short but oh well...

20h? Come on ive never taken that long to beat RE, not even the first time and i were only a little kiddo when the first RE came, that first time i beat RE:1 it took me 16h and thats REALLY long.

AITD is by far, the worse film I've ever watched that made theatrical release. And it also has the singularly worse performance EVER from "actress" Tara Reid
The funny thing about Uwe Bolll, is that he still manages to get great actors to appear in his films - Ben Kingsley & Michael Madsen in Bloodrayne, for example.
Silent Hill was a shit film for sure, but its nowhere near the wost game-movie adaptation ever. It just managed to be a less-than-mediocre horror flick in a sea of similar releases in the past few years, which is really dissapointing. Like the OP stated, the screenplay writer (Roger Avery) lost sight of what made the games so special & instead, seemed intent on using cheesey exposition and boring (duh! -obvious) dialogue to move the film forward.
Silent Hill to me, was always about the protagonist waking up to smell the ashen, and facing their inner demons, but the film failed to grasp this concept, and instead wanted to rationalize the town's existance as a whole. In the end, it all came around full circle - it now felt more like purgatory watching the film in the theatre.
However, one thing it DID do right, was the set design.
The cats in the bag.....(....and the bag's in the river....)

I think you mixed up storyline with every single fight.
They could follow the storyline of the games exactly, without have to show every single zombie.
The point is, they completely changed the storyline, the characters' relationships, etc. The only thing they "copied" is the event that of virus/zombies/monsters... As how it happened, who involved, it's completely different.
If you actually know the original stories from the video game, you'd know the original stories are great. And each of them is connected. All the characters are needed. Now the movies just made up their own characters, with only a few from the game.
The review show I watch on TV here gave it 1 and 1.5 out of 5 from the 2 regular reviwers.
They said "we assume you needed to play the game to work out what the $#&^ was going on and thats why we gave it the benefit of the doubt with the scoring"
"The views expressesed are those of the author and do not represent the position of MMORPG.com"

I would have liked the movie more if they had not tried to have any plot or dialogue. Seriously, there were a few creepy moments (ash children!!!!, the nurses), and all of the sets were very well done and extremely moody. The plot just became more absurd as the movie went on, and the dialogue was just terrible.
The cop was the worst, did anyone catch the line 'I think there was a fire,' about halfway through the movie? In the burned out town they've been wandering around in for half a day? The one which they all know had a coal mine explosion that burned it down? The fire we've heard about twenty times already, and seen in every bit of scenery? I laughed out loud in the theatre when I heard that line.
And was Sean Bean not totally wasted? "Hi I'm Sean Bean...I have a cool voice but no good dialogue...Sharon?" They should have had him in the town and his wife looking for him in the real world, he can do creeped out and half-sane very well.
Originally posted by DaEm0n Don't know about you guys, but doesn't the ending seem like the start to the game Silent Hill 2? You know, how in Silent Hill 2 the guy is looking for his wife? Yep, I sense a connection.
The movie had aspects from all the Silent Hill games. Which is why I made that post about it being 20-50 hours long if they followed the plots exactly. Again I may be wrong, but I had this all explained to me in detail by my buddy that I watched the movie with who'd played all the games.
A medal to Prasse for explaining the fact that there are no rules when creating a movie.
What game movies focues too much upon are:
1: The Story
2: The Characters
Which results in a blurry movie that has no feeling whatsoever when it comes to the game it is made for.
Why would it be such a bad idea to make the movies like the games? Someone said "because none would want to sit 20-25 hours in the theatre".
Huh.. is it really that bad? Well, let's say we wanted to make a movie out of Resident Evil. And this time we WANT the movie to be like the game. Let's remove all classical gaming problems and there will be a hell lot of time removed to actuall movie content.
It's different what appeals to people in games and in movies and it's different what truly works. But you have got to be dumb not to even think about solving it the way the gamers would want to see the movie...
In the games, the enemies and people can take tons of pain, in the movies, they would have a realistic pain tolerance.
In the games, obstacles cannot be avoided and there are no alternative ways around any problem! In the movie, there would be alternative sollutions and obstacles could be avoided.
This would save a hell lot of time when converting a game into an actual movie!
Instead of finding a key, the characters could blast through the door. You get the picture. I stronglt believe that Resident Evil could become a great movie and I hate the makers for not finding a sollution.
If a game could not become a movie then I want an explanation WHY there are movies in the games. These work fine and imagine that the rest of the game would also be converted into in-game movies but with more fluence to it then we would have one hell of an interesting movie. And don't forget METAL GEAR SOLID 2 which is like 60% movies. That works out fine doesn't it?
And if it somehow, somewhat becomes a problem to get the movie into a reasonable lenght, just plan a sequal right away. You know people will watch it anyway since it's a game movie.
There are tons of different movie categories, why can't "gaming-movie" be one of them..?

btw, there are enough in game movies to show the storyline of the games.
You can find them on Fileplanet.com.
Great in game movies.
