I remember playing Darkspace years ago, before EVE came out.  It was pretty fun.

I might give this a try again.

Freelancer? Freelancer was a mediocre Privateer clone, but I did enjoy it.  However, I have friends who have played Darkspace for years, and they say it is more like an RTS set in space?  And it's not actually free if you want to play on the persistant server (MMO server.)  The free server is a game server, with matches that end.  And you can only get access to certain ships.

    "Kaneda! What...do you see?"

Since this is'nt the commercial US version, you can play as much as you want on the persistent server as you want.

All ships are playable.. If you have the rank and badges to be able to use them.

Its an RTS if you like to build (choose the engineership)

You can mine of planets and sell the goods, or be a scout or a plain destroyerclass if you just want to kill'em all.

The asian version has 2 servers, one newbieserver with 3 hour rounds. And persistent server with organized fleets and stuff.

i'm talking about the asian version, your friends are talking about the US version. Both are quite the same, the asian client is even 100% english and i have yet to see one chinese/japanese/whatever-writing person ingame.

I may try the game, I don't play Space styled games, but sounds ok.

I tried darkspace, couldnt get into it.  Dont really like RTS's.  I did order this game (gets released in the US around Sept 6th or so), which reminds me of Earth and Beyond somewhat.  It is only a single player game, but has all kinds of quests to do plus the main Story line (find out who killed your Father) You can trade in it to and making money is easy so you can upgrade your ship.

They have a free demo available too. (around 920 megs) Graphics arent too bad.  Lots of dogfighting.

Its called Darkstar One.   Got great reviews

LOL.....I am so used to mmorpg's that last nite I was playing and got killed, I said to myself "Damn, experience loss and lost my ship" then a screen popped up and went to my last saved game.

    OMG...I am losing it.
