Well I guess they have to use such packages so as to have regular incomes to maintain the game up and running, and all, but truly I must say I don't like such methods : real money for in-game items or skills...

Anyway, LotRO is on the way so I shouldn't be playing Guild Wars for a very long time now !

Undercuts power leveling services. Personally I think trying out new marketing models can only help improve the industry in general

So what about WoW, EQ2, Lineage II and a few dozen more that do the same thing?  Real money for real items?

I guess those aren't real MMOs either, right?

How much you selling it for?  It's not a waste, it's called progression.  Some people don't want to play that long, and it's not like you have a monthly fee or anything.

I dunno, I have one maxed out level 20 ss necro with 15k scars and 400k exp, a level 20 warrior with 15k glads and a mesmer in the making with some 15k stuff.... offer? And just so you know I'm not quitting because I'm against progression, I'm quitting because they are selling skills on a "skill based" game and I'm against that kind of thing.

I gave my account away with max gold.  All maxed out level 20's, 2 PvP toons.  And tons of stuff.  I didn't feel the urge to play after I  put in 1,700 hours.  Now that a few of my friends got the game, I kind of want to play it again.  ;)

Having level 20 characters mean nothing to me, same with armor.  I just want the account.  :)

This isn't real money for real items... it is real money for in game skills. Skills that otherwise need to be earned. Again... super lame.

    For me its
just distasteful, considering that gold in GW does not have the same value as
in other mmos, this is basically worse than selling ingame currency for real
money. I would understand if they would make it so PvP chars have all skils
from the start if they feel that learning skills in PvP is not fun, but having players
to pay for it is just lame. I don’t know if this has something with NC soft business
model (they did admit on occasions that they would like to legalize in game
currency selling) but I have never seen it coming in GW. To be honest, I’m glad
I don’t play his game anymore, from being one of the most promising titles out
    there it changed into the
    biggest farce
    in the industry.

This isn't a Pay to PLay game.  It's mainly a PvP game.  So what about all those people who don't want to do PvE and get all the skills like that?  They pay $9.99 and get all the skills.  It's not like they are buying better gear and uber weapons, they are buying skills.

And just because you have all the skills doesn't mean you're that much better then someone who actually knows how to use them.  So I think it's a good idea and doesn't bother me.

I think GW's alternate pricing model is very good.

    $15/mo to play, for everyone
    OR
GW's zero subscription fees, plus these alternate methods of income to pay for the game, plus expansions that are initially priced as much as a new game?

I much prefer the GW model.

I can play the game whenever I wish, or not play it for months at a time, and I do not have to keep unsubbing and re-subbing during the months that I am not playing. If they release an expansion that I like, I can pay them for it and it ends up costing me less than I would have paid at $15/mo. Or I can not buy it and keep playing the game I like.

How many here can say they are paying for two, three, or more subscription based games per month?

I enjoy playing the occasional new Online RPGs as they come out, but I wouldn't want to keep several subscriptions active at the same time. I can say that I am both GW player and a DDO player or EVE player and I am content that I am not getting charged a flat $30 a month, or more.

The company deserves to earn money for their product. How they make that money is no less valid one way than another. At least Anet is giving its customers a choice of how they wish to pay for the game.

I couldn't agree more with the way you're thinking.  ArenaNet has to make some sort of income, the servers don't pay for themselves.

People think games like this are complete crap because everything isn't open, and it's mainly PvP.  It's a different type of game, just like WoW, EVE, etc is.

If you don't like, don't play it.  As for me, I'm going to get all the expansions...  And they also sell extra music too.  I guess that's a sin when the game doesn't have a monthly fee.

You mean http://www.directsong.com/ ? No thats a seperate company (no ties to NCSoft or ArenaNet) that happens to sell music packs for several games of which GW & GW:Faction are some of them.
